Kinda silly trade, but I have a silver (platinum) DS, original model, for trade. I'm looking for a red (Mario Kart edition) original DS to swap. I've always wanted one of these, and I do have some items on my available list that might help you decide to part with your red DS. Take a looksie, and if you see anything you want (or want to do a straight-up trade), let me know.

I would also consider trading for a DS Lite. Now before you laugh at me, I'd offer up my silver original DS Lite and perhaps something on my available list. Let me know either via PM or through the offer system. Thank you!

Also looking for original DS accessories, such as additional styluses, in particular a CASE for my original DS. CML!!

Frank's right. I was hoping for the Mario Kart edition original DS.

I would probably add cash, depending on how much was needed. So, if anyone has, let me know. I suppose if you didn't want the platinum DS, you could always trade it in at a game place either online or off.

Sherri, thanks for the website link. Replacing the case could be an option, however, I'm not confident enough to disassemble my DS to put a new outer shell on it.

Just remember to plug in the touch screen!! lol.. my hubby switched out our platinum case for an electric blue one just cause I had to have it blue (not that we use it since we all have DS lites now) ... and he finally got it all back together, and the touch screen wouldn't work... He seriously cussed and cursed the entire process and swore he wouldn't do it again... I had my son go back through the DS and he found that the connector for the touch screen wasn't connected... so that fixed that problem...

So put a red shell on it and get a Mario Kart decal... that's the only thing different about it... other than it keeps the silver bottom from the platinum version which you already have. Here's a listing on ebay for mario skins:

Thanks for the advice and help offered, Frank. But really, I know perhaps it's essentially the same thing, but I really was after the Mario Kart edition of the original DS. Appreciate everyone chiming in to give me different options, though.

Well good luck with it, hope you find one!! You know you could check with your local Gamestop and see if they have one available... in which case you might just pick it up and have an extra one... comes in handy to play games with someone else...

Everyone in our family (4) has a DS lite, and when we were on vacation, we played games on our systems, like Uno, Clue, and stuff like that... it was fun... we also all have PSP's and did the same thing with those!

I have an Electric Blue DS which I just can't seem to part with... every time I think that I will, I don't... it's an extra one, a spare if anything goes wrong with our DS lites, but then we just replace them if that's the case because the screen is brighter and the unit is less bulky... but if we have company, then they can have a system to play on... not that we've ever used it for that... lol..

I was at Gamestop a week ago and saw 3 MK ones for $56.98 each. They were all DS only and I didn't check condition. But hey if your willing to pay $56+ for it I'd go to gamestop, they usally have at least one.

Frank, that would be great, if I had the money. I would have to do a "trade in" on my platinum DS for it to be able to afford the swap. I wonder how much they give toward a platinum? I know, this is Gamestop we're talking about. They will give me the lowest price possible and charge me the most. * frown * Dammit!

Well, it would be nice, but I'm the only one that plays DS in my household. I don't have any "older friends" that have DS's either, so it's all me. That's why I love to play on WiFi. At least I have someone to play with, even if they're not in the same state! * smile *

lol I've never tried the WiFi thing with the DS's... I tried to see how much trade in an original DS would bring... I'm guessing about $15 or so since they are selling refurbished ones for $30 if I remember correctly from the last time I was in there... You could always call and ask... I do that a lot...

Yeah...wifi is fun depending on who you connect up with. I didn't think it would be worth my time to bring it to Gamestop, and Frank...selling it on here would probably be the best thing, but I want a DS in return. My DS gaming has just started! * smile *

There's a trade in company called eStarland, and with trading my platinum DS in for a DS Lite, it would be a difference of around $45.00 that I would have to pay in. Not bad, I guess. I just am not quite ready to part with my "phat" DS. It's sexy..sleek...smooth... * love *

Yeah, but he doesn't want a lite... :) Although I thought I didn't want one either... I was happy with my original DS, until I tried to play it in the car one time and I couldn't see the screen because of the bright sunlight... I didn't have that problem with the lite as my daughter showed me her screen in the car... so I've had a couple since then... a black one I bought at Best Buy which I still am using, a pink one I traded for then ended up trading for a PSP, went back to the black one which my hubby was using instead of the original blue one, then picked him up one at the pawn shop with a broken hinge and replaced the case with the black case (still has white buttons from the original case) from my son's when he switched his case out with a metallic red one and kept the black buttons... His is really sharp looking!! I just use case decals on mine... lol..

Well....that's not entirely true. I would trade up for a lite if the opportunity presented itself. I want a red original mario kart ds but I'm also trying to save for a lite (probably black, maybe polar white since I've never had one of those). So far I've managed to save $5.00 toward one! * raspberry * Soooooooo, if a lite came up instead, I probably would go for it.

I've had a lite before, and really loved the screens being nice and bright for viewing, plus the case design is just plain sexy. And of course it's lighter than the original. I can't do ebay, however. Most of the transactions are paypal which I don't have. I've played with an original PSP and wasn't overly impressed with it. I guess because it didn't have my favorite games and my favorite character on it, although I did like the design on it. The screen was super for viewing.

Check your local pawn shops, I picked up some there sometime ago for about $50, they have come down in price now that the new DSi is out... I like the PSP's although I never thought I would because I liked the ease of using the stylus so much... once I got used to it, I prefer some games on the PSP over the DS lite ones.. Puzzle Quest Challenge of the Warlords comes to mind, but part of that is due to better graphics in the game on the PSP... (the Wii version sucks for graphics!!) not so much the interface.. although once you get used to it, it seems to be a lot quicker than the DS version!!

Good luck finding something you're really looking for... :)

What I especially love is getting DS lite skins! They are super easy to put on, and a lot of times on Ebay you can get 3 skins for the price of $10! Plus they come in so many different types...

You know, you might want to look for a DS skin of Mario instead of trying to get a red Mario DS system... with a Mario skin it'd be just like having the Mario system if you could find one on a red background!! Plus you'd only be out maybe $10-$12!!

Sherri, that's true. I should just put a skin on my DS. It would essentially be the same thing, then when I get my lite, I'll put a skin on that. A red Mario skin on a polar white lite would look sexy as all hell. * love * I did try the PSP for awhile, but really couldn't get in to it. It's not that I hate the PSP, it's just I've been a Nintendo fan since day one, and Mario, Pokemon, Castlevania, Link, etc.. are all on the DS.

Thanks for your input, Frank and Sherri! * smile *

I personally still have My DS phat, DSi, and a PSP 2000. It's really not fair to compaire them, since the DS is more pick up & play, where as PSP is more like a portable PS2. It all depends on the types of games.

Also I'd really avoid the skins. Depending on which type you get... I bought one for my GBASP years ago and it was horrible. It looks like crud, and it was a pain to get off. Just my 2 cents... Good luck with whatever you choose. And regardless of what you pick, at least you'll have your DS in a sexy case. * wink *

Well, I'm not sure at this point what to do. I'd rather just keep saving my money for a DS Lite, I suppose. I'm in no rush to get one, and maybe by the time I get around to it, the price will be lower!! I've also had some horror stories with skins. Some are impossible to remove once you put them on, and I'd rather not tarnish my phat DS with them. If they are only "semi adhesive" and can be removed with ease, then I might consider it. I know how much of a problem I have putting screen protectors on my DS.......so this might not be such a good thing to attempt. * laughing out loud *

I've had more than 3 on each of my PSP and DS's.. the DS's are a breeze, they don't leave much residue, and if they do, you just use window cleaner to clean it off... Now the only problem I see with them is my first PSP has a replacement case, and the paint is wearing, so the skin may take off the paint, but that's because it was insufficient to begin with since I had to send the first case back after putting it on due to the paint flaking off!

They are pretty much like those static window things... you take off and reuse..

Yeah, those are the ones I like...the static window ones. I really don't think the DS Lite needs a skin, since it's so sleek simply by itself. How much are DS Lites going for these days? Like "used" ones at Gamestop or something.

Looks like $90! Maybe a little cheaper at a pawn shop... they are down in price since the new DSi came out... I don't really see the hype, you lose the ability to play the GBA games, and if I want to draw on pictures, I'll use Photoshop... lol..

True that. I didn't get a PSP for that reason. I'm not overly excited about devices that can do multiple things, and I'm not a camera person, anyway. The download feature just mimics the Wii, so I think Nintendo was attempting to streamline their portable more in line with their console. I can still play all the games for the DS series on my original. For some reason I thought Lites were in the 50 dollar range...meh.

Well if you get a good price, or someone really needing the cash... :) I consider the original DS in the price range of $75, but that's not realistic either.. now it's down to about $40! :(( I think the one I picked up from the pawn shop with a broken hinge cost me about $75.. course that's been a year or so ago, and we had a good case to put it in... although it ended up being black with white buttons and such... which doesn't affect playability at all... and it doesn't look too terrible... lol..

I agree about the devices... they try to do too much stuff and end up not doing any of them well... I did pick up a phone that plays mp3's, it has a display on the outside shell of the phone that has all the mp3 information and such plus you can switch songs without going into the phone itself which is a neat feature. It also tells the time and has a light display when the cover is opened then closed... but that's not why I bought it, I bought it because it was purple!! lol..

There doesn't seem to be too much difference between the original and slim PSP versions, I have both... I don't see much faster loading from the slim, although it isn't as heavy as the original which comes in handy if you're playing games for hours on end... :) I really don't see the benefit in the new PSP Go's either... it just looks awkward to hold, but I haven't actually messed with one...

Maybe I'm just too old to appreciate the differences between the old and new technologies... I don't know... my son who is the electronics guru in the house doesn't really want either of the new systems, so that tells me the ones we have now are sufficient!! lol..

#27 posted November 22, 2009 at 6:25pm (EST)

That's true, Sherri. Yes, the DS original and Lite look completely different, and the screen brightness can be a major buying point for me (can't stand squinting to see the displays), but my original still works fine. You can get devices that will increase the brightness of the original DS, but still nowhere near what the light can do. Maybe I should just forgo buying a Lite and buy a game I want instead.

I usually don't play games on end for hours at a time, as I don't have "time" to do that these days. Quick sessions are the best I can do with my schedule. So, the weight of the original DS doesn't bother me in the slightest. I might play for an hour, but for me, that's a marathon session. Animal Crossing is one game that I could play for lengths of time, but usually I only do that when I'm wifi'ing with my friends across the country.

Yep yep... and you only need the brighter screen if you're in direct sunlight... which probably isn't very often... so all in all, a new game is always a good option... :)

I get sucked into Puzzle Quest.. but I like it on the PSP better... lol.. Most of the other stuff I don't get into where I lose track of time because I generally swap out games frequently...

Yeah, sounds like me. One game usually doesn't keep my attention long enough to develop arm/hand strain from holding the DS. I have been playing Space Invaders Extreme for extended periods lately, as the action is fast and it's Space Invaders. Haven't played the second one yet, but the first one sure is fun if you like old school games with a modern twist to them.

Has the hinge thing on the DS Lites been an issue, or has that been resolved? I heard that the unit's hinge can crack leading to all sorts of problems, but I haven't heard anyone complaining. Perhaps because they all purchased DSi's and the problem was resolved by Nintendo.

#30 posted November 23, 2009 at 9:11pm (EST)

They're pretty sturdy, but they aren't going to take too much abuse, if you flip the case around, or catch it wrong, I can see it putting strain on the hinges and cracking them... but if you're not overly aggressive with it, it will be fine and should last a good long time... Mostly they get to the point where they don't want to stay open, (they are either fully open or closed, no in between, and it is floppy when it is sprung, there's no tension to the hinge) they get sprung more than cracked... We have 3, now 4 DS lites and haven't had a problem with them, the 4th one I bought with a broken/sprung hinge, but knew it was that way and paid less for it, then just swapped out the case when we got it home...

I have Space Invaders on the PC, it's a blast!! I'm not sure that the stylus would be a plus in that game... but maybe I'm just not quick enough... pretty much why I stay away from those type of games and just do the puzzle ones... lol..

The stylus isn't used in Space Invaders Extreme on the DS..it's all pure button magic. * smile * I'm sure that the cracked hinge case is probably over by now, for those new units in any event. My DS original has no problems, but the "lock" position is a little loose, but still stays in place. There's just some play in it that I try not to make worse.

Well that's a good thing then!! I just am not good with those type of games... that's pretty much the problem with the hinges on the lite's, they first get loose, then quit locking into position, then it's floppy flapjack time! lol.. if you're careful with it, it shouldn't get to be a problem you'll have to fix... :) Sometimes the stylus can be more of a hindrance like in games like Arkanoid... or breakout type games...

I really enjoy the Zelda game (Phantom Hourglass), but it's all stylus controlled! That drives me crazy when they don't even include any options to use the buttons or D pad. Games that give you the option to choose one or the other are the types I enjoy. Of course since I love Zelda, I had to have it despite the control scheme. Maybe I'm just too old school to be cool. LOL
