I've been meaning to ask this for a while now, but when you file a BTR, I was wondering what is the point of entering in the user's real name when after you submit it and it gets posted, it ends up using whatever name they have on their account?

I guess that's a good question... I'm not sure. I think it may have something to do with how old btrs worked. They didn't used to even link to a person's account before. I used to link them by email or name, if possible. Some really old BTRs are like this. But, people don't always get spelling right, so the name wasn't consistent with the account. Something like that.
Or, maybe, someone wrote deuchebag as the name...
You can put alternate names in the aliases line, I think. |

Why not just remove the real name field altogether and save people the trouble?

Yeah, I guess I could stop prompting for it.
What I meant to say before is that we have over 70 old BTRs that are not linked to any existing account. For those, the name field is used. So, I don't want to remove the name field. But, since a username is required for all new BTRs, I could stop asking and just fill it in automatically or something.
Actually, I could do the same for the email field. |

Um..what if people use an alias for their name on here and the real name is in the trade record and the return address? Then you'd want their real name on the BTR so people will maybe recognize them elsewhere. Like if you're using the name link to my account here, it would be Bones, good luck tracking down someone named Bones, and have fun using that last name to look up anything. Only places you see my real name is the trade log and the envelop, and the people who arent involved in the trade wont know that.

Agreed... maybe changing the "Alias" field to "Real Name (if different) or other Aliases" or something like that would solve the problem?

These are the fields:
Username of Bad Trader:
First and Last Name of Bad Trader:
Also Known As:
Email of Bad Trader:
Other known email addresses: (optional, use comma to separate)
Postal Mailing Address:
Why do you feel this person is a bad trader?
There is no alias field, it's just real name. I guess I can only see the "Also Known As" being optional.

Oh, I think I misunderstood the question. Are you saying the name we put in is not being used, and the system replaces the name we put in with the name on the account? If that's it then yeah, that's wacked bill

The "also known as" is what i meant when i said the "alias" field (since they both mean essentially the same thing)
Been a while since I filed a BTR

i'm not overly concerned about it actually - I'm pretty careful, and the majority of my trades now are low value stuff anyway, and most people who want to rip people off want to go big.

But I dont think the field should be removed though, cause you'd probably want to have the person "real" name somewhere.

You can use "also known as" if you know of names they use other than the one on their user page. |

OK, I change the BTR form to not ask for name/email anymore. It will just use whatever is on that person's account. You can still enter alternate name/email via the extra fields, though. |
