Ever since getting hooked on Guitar Hero, I've been seriously considering getting a guitar, and while I'm aware there are electric and acoustic guitars, beyond that I'm clueless about them. What would you guys recommend as a "beginner" type guitar?

What are some of the bands you like? What style of music?
There are a lot of guitars that have very distinct sounds...and true, amps and effect pedals can change things,
but if there's a specific genre you prefer over others, it would be best to find something closest to that sound.

I'm mostly into alternative music, but I've been getting more into heavy metal lately. I enjoy the sounds of Rob Zombie and Týr, but I don't wanna start off that intense just yet.

For your type of music, I'd get a guitar with humbucker pickups. They're more versatile and sound better, I believe.
Anyway, lots of options. I'd check out rondomusic.com and look at Agile AL-2000's.
Squire makes decent cheap guitars (just avoid the really lower level ones). Also, on guitarfetish.com are some really sweet, really cheap guitars.

Tis a good 'un. I'm not actually a huge fan of the color, but the guitar itself is win.
This is more my speed:

Don't listen to Tim on color choices, Vdub....he likes boring.
I think the green spalted is awesome, so is the blue one and several other colors.
Regardless of color, i'm sure you'd be happy with the sound and playability of the guitar and
that's the important thing. Choose whatever color catches your eye.

I guess he likes wood.
I was actually looking for something similar to the green spalted, except in blue, but I didn't see anything.

I LOVE WOOD.
I don't think spalted is what you're thinking of though... that guitar you posted, Vdub, has a quilted top (looks kinda wavy...), the spalted part is actually rot that developed in the wood, and they kept it in while making the guitar, giving it a unique design. You can see it better here:
http://www.rondomusic.com/product1758.html
See the jagged black lines? Yeah.
You can see the quilted top a little better here:
http://www.rondomusic.com/al-2800blueq.html
So your finish would look like that, just green.

SmarmySir - You're right. Spalting refers to the wood coloration caused by fungi

I'd recommend the first one Vance linked.
The second one is more of a cheapy guitar that is sold in Best Buy. Yeah.
The third is a good guitar, but doesn't seem to fit what you're looking for.

I was thinking of something a little more affordable than the first one. If my parents won't spring for a $225 Agile AL-2000, they won't buy that Agile AL-3000. My mom said I should be looking at something cheap in case the guitar turns out to be something that doesn't last long. |
vDub

| | #24 posted August 7, 2008 at 11:55am (EST) |
but if I can make a serious effort in learning how to play, I will buy a better guitar like the Agile AL-2000 I had my eye on in the future, but right now I'm broke as a joke. |

It's like the AL-2000, but like $90 cheaper. You probably won't notice the inferiority too much since you don't have any experience with guitars yet, but my guess is that it will be more than adequate as a beginner's axe.

What do you guys think of this?
http://grandrapids.craigslist.org/msg/747527165.ht...
I think it's a good deal provided the guitar comes w/ an amp, and it's a bit more local than some of the others I was looking at on Craigslist. |

And how much did you spend?

Harmony.
It was $125 for the guitar and amp. |

Too bad I didn't think to recommend this before hand:
http://www.amazon.com/Behringer-AC108GPKST3BK-Vint...
I bought that kit just because the small practice amp is actually a tube amp. It's still the amp I'm using
with my better Xaviere guitar now.

The only thing about the guitar I got is that the tone control knob is broken. It's wobbly and it doesn't do anything when I turn it. |
SmarmySir
| | #33 posted August 8, 2008 at 12:40pm (EST) |
I should have told you to stay away from Harmony. The quality of their guitars is absolutely awful. Hopefully yours isn't so awful.
Richie: Haha, I looked at that Behringer link, and saw your review.

I was looking at some of the guitar tabs that I found on http://guitar.about.com and I was wondering, what does it mean by "open string"? |
Richie

| | #36 posted August 8, 2008 at 5:40pm (EST) |
An open string is plucking the string without a finger pressing down on it.
Each open string plucked produces a note just like putting a finger down
on a string anywhere on the fretboard produces a note.
I just came across a kick ass site with free lessons: http://www.justinguitar.com

best beginner bang for the buck... Ibanez- and it'll play the heaviest music you can throw at it- pedals or sweet pre-amp assuming. Steve Vai and Joe Satriani among many others play Ibanez. |
