I want a computer that will make a minimal amount of nose. I would appreciate any input from owners or people who use quiet machines, as this isn't something that there is much information on. Computers of interest:
- Mac Mini (intel version)
- Macbook
- Macbook pro
- Pc laptop? (one of those cheap $400 ones....dell I think)
Ideally I'd like something that you A) Cannot hear the fan whirring, and B) The hard drive would be as quiet as possible.
I would guess the above computers are pretty quiet, but then again, they were talking about the macbook pro at macfixit, discussing some annoying whirring sound it was making.
Problem: The desktops I have make too much noise if I leave it on overnight for a download. I have to turn it off so I can get some sleep... This might not seem like a big deal, but is important to me.

My Powerbook G4 is VERY quiet. When the fan is running hard you can hear it, but it isn't that bad. At my previous job I had a Dell Inspiron and when the fan came on (most of the time) it sounded like a jet engine. I haven't experienced the sound of a Mini or Macbook/Macboo Pro.
Apple recently announced that there was a problem with Macbook Pros making a whining noise. Hopefully if you buy one now it won't have the same problem. Seehttp://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303365 for details. |

All of the G5 desktops I've been around have been really quiet. I've heard that they occasionally have problems with noise, but I've never heard any of them make very much.
I haven't seen one of the new intel machines, so I don't know if they are quiet.

Is that a desktop?
When I got my power macintosh g4 a few years ago, it sounded like a vacuum cleaner when the fan was at full speed (also most of the time). Then by pure accident (I received NO notification by apple), I was browsing macfixit and they mentioned apple had an option to replace the power supplies for free, because they were so loud. Well, I of course jumped on it, and it's still noisy, but more like a computer noise, not a vacuum cleaner noise.

Does the Mac Mini even have fans in it? I heard it didn't. |

The Mac Mini does indeed have a fan based on what I've read. I've also read that it's not terribly loud and doesn't kick in unless you're doing something fairly processor intensive, though. |

I have a Macbook Pro and it doesn't make any noise really. In my experience Mac Minis are so ridiculously quiet you can't even tell they are on. But hey get a MacBook Pro you'll love it I promise. ;) |

My G4 iBook is very quiet unless I'm doing something processor-intensive like converting video from one format to another, etc. Then you can hear the fan, but it's nott that loud (compared to many other fans I've heard).

I ended up getting a mac pro and a mac mini. The mac mini I keep turned on at all times. As I am trying to sleep, with every other device turned off, if I listen I can hear it, but it is quiet enough not to be a disturbance. During the daytime I can't hear it at all hardly. It really is very quiet. BTW, for a full sized computer, the mac pro is pretty quiet also.
