So this Mini came with a 80 GB HD and that just isn't cutting it. Should I replace the HD or buy an external HD? What are the pros/cons? How do I get my information from one HD to the next? Also, will a faster RPM make my computer faster? This unit shipped with a 4200 RPM HD, will a 5400 RPM or higher model produce a noticeable increase in speed? Will it lead to overheating problems? And, lastly, can anyone recommend a source for whatever HD I end up purchasing?

And LASTLY lastly, is installation difficult? I've installed RAM no problem.

OK! That's all. INFORM ME.

if you have the room, I would go with an external 7200 RPM Firewire drive, gives you the most flexibility, easiest transfer, etc.
Might be cheaper than a larger, 5400RPM 2.5" drive. If you have a 3.5" drive around you can put it in an external case of course.
Minis can sometimes be tedious to open and work on. If you have opened it to install RAM, then you know the tricks.

I have three external drives that I use for backups and extra storage: 320GB, 500GB, and 1TB.

Yowza!

Thanks for the advice, Osiris. Have any experience with the MiniStack, by chance?

nice package, won't increase footprint, a bit expensive, but if space is at a premium, may be worth it. Lots of ports, and quiet.
I would spend less for the FW400 option, unless there was a lot of video editing, etc going on.

I use an external in an upright case, small footprint, 3.5" drive inside.

Yeah, I'd get the FW400. I don't do anything resource heavy, I just have too much crap.

Probably the cheapest thing you could do is buy another harddrive cheap, and swap it out. Though this video shows how to swap out covers, opening the case is the same.
