I noticed the thread concerning Robert Jordan. May I suggest someone else who, IMHO, is a far superior author.

I'm talking about George R. R. Martin. He is currently in the middle of a series called "A Song of Ice and Fire". About to release his forth book in the series, George has established himself as one of the greatest fantasy writers of our time. His world may be fantasy, but it is so real, it could very well be part of the history of our own world (save for a very few things, which I leave to the potential reader to discover). It is dark and gritty, not for the faint of heart, and I think accurately represents what a war is really like. It is a wonderfully detailed land filled with characters who are not simplistically depicted as good or evil, but who are simply humans being human. You can relate to them, even as they are doing wonderful and terrible things. There are many sides to the overall conflict, and each chapter is told from a particular character's perspective. Almost every side is represented. This puts you right in the middle of a most fascinating experience.

I like Robert Jordan, and have read through Book 7 of The Wheel of Time. However, after reading the work of George R.R. Martin, I don't think I can ever go back. I have read hundreds of "mature" books over a span of 15 years, and I would rate all three books in this series among my personal Top 10. I believe the reviews on Amazon.com will corroborate my testimony.

Just spreading the word to my fellow armchair adventurers.

Hmmm...I'll have to try him when I'm done with Tom Clancy and Michael Crichton. *smile*

Martin also contributes to and edits a shared world series called "Wild Cards." Wild Cards is a superhero universe, but it has more in common with books like Watchmen than it does Superman/Batman.

In 1946, an alien virus is released over New York. 90% of those that catch it die horrible deaths from symptoms like melting or bursting into flame. 9% become "Jokers" and are disfugured in some way. (Examples include transparent skin, growing fur, becoming a lizard person, etc.)

The last 1% get super powers!

There are now 16 books in the series. The series is set up as an alternate history story as well, and many of the tales include Wild Cards versions of real people and events.

The books are currently being reprinted, and the first 4 or 5 volumes are available now. Used copies of older printings are probably available cheap on places like Amazon Marketplace.

I recommend these highly, as I have been enjoying them for years now.

Wildcards *yes*

I used to read those, but lost track of them. Are Fortunato and The Turtle still around?

Fortunato pretty much went inactive somewhere in the middle of the series. The Turtle continues to turn up though.

The series took a very long hiatus in the 90's, with no new books being published. In the last 2 years or so though, they've started reissuing the older volumes. They also issued a new volume last year, called Deuces Down. The book focused on the Wild Cards classed as deuces, those with trivial ace powers.
