I'm about 8hrs into Crystal. Good game but I haven't touched it in about a week. Been playing Starfox Adv. lately, great game. Maybe when I go back to work on the 2nd I'll play Pokemon again.
This is the first Pokemon I've played, how exactly should you go about leveling up Pokemon? Just pick a few you want to become strong? Seems like they are multiplying faster then I can mess with them. Most are just sitting in storage anyway. Also, how do you keep up with which ones you cought? Will it say something if you try to catch a duplicate?

If you catch a duplicate, you'll know it because you won't get the message about its info being newly added to the Pokedex. It can't be newly added if it's already there. You can easily check which Pokemon you've gotten already by accessing the Pokedex from the start menu. Where it says "OWN", that'll be how many you've caught total, and as you scroll through the list of Pokemon, the ones with complete info are the ones you've caught/owned, and the ones with incomplete info are the ones you've just seen/battled.
You can try keeping one team through the whole game, but I almost guarantee you you'll catch some that you'll end up liking better, so your team will change a lot. I recommend having the first box in your PC hold your favorite 1-3 of each type of Pokemon, so that way you can easily switch out and still have a well-balanced team. As for your team, try not to have more than 2 of one type, or 3 or more that are weak to a certain type. For example, Houndoom and Charizard might be ok since their secondary types are useful, but if you also have a Golem, that's 3 Pokemon that are weak to Water. Not cool, but it can be easily countered if you have a good Grass or Electric type on your team. It might be a good idea since you're new to try and have at least one well-trained Pokemon of each type, that way you won't have trouble with any particular Gym.
Hint: When you get to the route to the east of Ecruteak (forget the #) start Headbutting trees and looking for a Heracross. Very useful Bug/Fighting type and one of my personal favorites.

Sure it's natural. I've restarted a couple times but I've easily spent that in total.
