when you did your engine swap, did you take off the front end? and did you keep the tranny in?

We did not take off the front end. It was TIGHT, but we were able to do it without removing the front end. Most people seem to do this, but we didn't.

We did not leave the tranny in. But, we actually took it out and put it back in attached to the engine, if I recall. Was just easier. Then connected the drive shaft back up underneath.

did you swap in a big block or a 350? a BB would be physically larger than my engine from exterior dimensions, a 350 would be smaller.

and did you have directions you followed or just wing it?

We swapped out a 327 SB and swapped in a 396 BB. The car was built for a BB though -- as it would have been "born" with a 396 in it.

I really had no idea what I was doing -- but I posted on Chevelles.com and got some general tips. It was more just a list ("Remove this, then that, then this; then use the cherry picker to pull it out; then blah"). Some people disagree a bit on whether or not to pull it out with the tranny attached, but that's fairly normal to get some disagreements, of course. * smile *

i need to fiddle around with my tranny a bit anyways, i have a b&m rachet shifter that the cable needs to be tightened, since right now I can't force into first and it doesn't automatically down shift. So right now if I start it up I can go 1-2-3, but if im already driving i only have 2-3.

out of curiosity, how long did it take you to take you old out and install the new?

Took the old out one Saturday -- put the new in one Saturday. With a long pause in between. * smile *

Actually, I don't remember exactly. I think I had removed everything beforehand (i.e. everything bolted onto the engine). So, when we actually removed it, it was just a matter of hooking up the lift and removing the two main engine bolts -- and then slow working it out without banging it into the car itself.

Gong back in was a similar thing -- where I think we got it back in in maybe 4-5 hours including getting the tranny and headers hooked back up and such. Then I likely did the other odd bits later.

It's been a while now, so memory is foggy on timing, sorry.
