This weekend so far
Tokyo Godfathers
http://www.animeondvd.com/reviews2/disc_reviews/28...
I enjoyed it very much. It follows 3 strangely different homeless people in tokyo as they find an abandoned baby. There were laugh out loud moments, mostly from "uncle bag" a homless crossdressing homosexual. And there were also obligatory touching moments.
Memories
http://www.animeondvd.com/reviews2/disc_reviews/27...
This is Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomo's work. There are 3 separate episodes each standing along.
The first episode "Magnetic Rose" was probably my favorite. It rings true to 1980's sci-fi space anime.
The Triplets of Belleville
http://www.sonyclassics.com/triplets/#
ok... what.. the ... hell.. was... this? It was fun to watch. There is hardly any dialog at all. The plot doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Here let me explain: Grandma buys pudgy grandson a dog, he's bored with dog, buys him a tricycle, she then trains him vigourously to compete in the tour de france. Then during the race he's kidnapped by the french mafia. The mafia uses him in a betting ring to see who can peddle the furthest while looking at a projector. Oh and then there are these old triplets, that do 1920's style dancing and jigs who help the grandma get her son back... yeah...

Triplets of Bellville was awesome. I like when they blow up the frogs.
Oh yeah, we watched The Green Mile last night. Pretty good, but I like Shawshank better. |

Not a fan of Green Mile. I don't like Stephen King in general.

I actually like movies based on his short stories, like Shawshank and Green Mile. King has GREAT ideas on paper, but the endings to his books always seemed rushed and not with alot of thought involved, especially when you consider how unique the original idea is.

Just finished watching Waking Life.
This one's a keeper. I loved the animation style. The subject matter was right up my alley too.
Check it out if you haven't seen it.

No its not. It's live action that has been handpainted over. It's a very unique style. Here are some screens.

I REALLY want to play with the Rotoshop software the guy wrote to make the movie. Did you watch the bonus feature about it? Really cool stuff.
Looks like Rotoshop might actually become available to the public (in 2006):

there are current packages out there, like After effects, that allow a great deal of flexibility with rotoscoping.
I have a short I did, with some rotoscoping about a year ago. I wonder if I still have it.
Edit: Haven't watched the bonus feature yet.

If you'd like to look at it that way, sure, "It's a cartoon" but then again, you'd be missing the point.
All the original source material is actual video, which was then painted over frame by frame in a process called rotscoping. I wouldn't really call that a cartoon.

Max, no offense, but your taste in.. everything, is quite boring to me. I personally don't limit myself to any particular genre, but I don't see myself ever watching or listening to anything you might. Oh, and Taxi. Pretty decent.

You can actually rotoscope in Photoshop.
It's a painstaking process but you export your video into consecutive picture files.
1 frame of video = sixty invidual picture files.
Doing just 1 minute equals 3600 frames, so imagine how long a project like waking life took.
You go through each frame, paint, mask or remove items, and when you are done, you export the consecutive picture files as one moving video file. Tada!

The Notebook - Not as cliched as the back of the case makes it out to be. It wasn't a bad flick by any means, but I couldn't bring myself to care about either character. This has more to do with me being a robot than anything else.
City of God - Very well done film. The cinematography was reminiscent of a Guy Richie film at times, but that's it as far as parallels between the two go. Very serious plot revolving around a boy born into a life of gangs and poverty trying to find his way in the world. In the process, a brutal gang war erupts in his town, one in which he cannot evade. And then there's some other stuff. I'm done writing!

Pi -- Good independent film by the guy who did Requiem for a Dream. About a math guy who goes crazy trying to find an overall pattern in the Stock Market. Kind of a sloppy quality DVD transfer, but a 60k budget is more than likely the culprit. I can appreciate the frustration the main character has as I can liken that to programming in Java.

Yesterday I watch Sanjuro The criterion DVD
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0780...
This is a companion piece to Yojimbo, which I have yet to see.
Cuts are used sparringly during dialouge and fight scenes. There are also long uninterrupted pans that flow effortlessly. I am always for a good samurai flick especially one's with heart.
Good watch!

Bought it for 2 bucks, but can't seem to get through the first 15 minutes. I've tried about three times already. Already been told it's no gem, but I want to know that it sucks by watching it on my own

Akira

No surprises here. It's been about seven years since I've seen this. So I'm thinking I'll enjoy it. I have fond memories of watching it.
The Sea Is Watching (Umi wa miteita)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0316829/
I'm on a Kurosawa kick. This was his last screen play before his death.
Cowboy Bebop Movie: Knocking On Heaven's Door
http://www.animeondvd.com/reviews2/disc_reviews/21...
Haven't seen the movie yet. But I'm sure I'll enjoy it.
