All awesome:
Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego
Mathnet
Square One TV
Bill Nye the Science Guy
Enlightened Sesame Street
Magic School Bus
Reading Rainbow
3-2-1 Contact
And for the sophisticated viewer out there, I remember the local outlet used to run:
Red Dwarf
Monty Python
Waiting for God
Are You Being Served
Young Ones
Star Trek
Doctor Who
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe
Red Fudging Green
It must suck to be a kid now. Every time I see Elmo on TV, I want to shoot that little furry red bastard with a shotgun.
What happened people.

PBS gave me my first exposure to anime (excluding Transformers and stuff like that). Urusei Yatsura

Yeah, they had a block of anime every Sunday evening. They had Neon Genesis Evangelion, back when it was still newish. They would also air OVAs as well as full series. Please Save My Earth
This was back in the 90s, it was just the perfect time. Anime had cultivated a decent number of American fans by then, and this was before there was any on Cartoon Network (or on any network for that matter), so they had good viewership. In fact, they would always talk up the anime whenever they had a pledge drive or whatever it's called when they're asking for donations. This is the PBS station from San Jose, so I'm sure their market was ahead of the curve. But this was just before anime became hugely popular and every geek was obsessed with it, so it was cheap enough for them to buy (they don't have anime anymore, it's probably too expensive now).

My PBS runs Monty Python every once in a great while. The local outlet is pretty lame because they're always on pledge week and showing "safe" stuff like Lawrence Welk or some 80 year old reformed Doo-Wop group. I think part of the reason they do that is because whenever a good show comes on like Monty Python or the new Doctor Who, they get complaints from the religious people in the area over the bawdy humor or subject matter, and decide to run it at 1 in the morning. I know that's what happened the show Coupling in my area.
The Philadelphia one is pretty good, they usually show the good stuff like Coupling, Vicar of Dibley, and a whole bunch of Are You Being Served that I didn't even know existed. Coupling is an awesome show if you can catch it. Waiting for God is a good one too.

On a tangent from the last post... if the outlets had the guts to keep some of this stuff on they would have no problem attracting an audience of people who appreciate the stuff. I think PBS has been drifting away from the more eccentric stuff that made them popular over the last decade or so.

The cartoon was the shtuff, but I especially loved the computer games in school, since you had to use your knowledge of geography and locations to find her
