Face in the Frost
Early book by future YA fiction writer* John Bellairs about some well meaning but ineffective magicians trying to stop the transformation of the world by a much more powerful wizard. Imagine a M.R. James story written by Tolkien on one of his lighter days. The writer has a sincere, domestic style that he uses to describe some weird as hell things. It's a balance between horror and fantasy kept steady by humor and some restraint. Doesn't take itself too seriously, worth reading.
(* most of his YA stuff was illustrated by the awesome Edward Gorey)
Confederacy of Dunces
Some book about some butt-hole that goes on for about 460 pages. Imagine a combination of Sheesh and DragonLordFrodo living at home with his mom at 30. There are some funny moments in this book, but one can only go online to find people like this anymore. It tries very, very hard.
