This thread is for posting tips and suggestions on military tactics as well as any questions you might have. Main Post will be kept updated with all good suggesstions

* - Keep your wall level even with your town. This provides a defense bonus that when stacked with Phalanax resistance makes your town VERY hard to conquer.
* - Phalanax and Swordsmen are 2 of the best defenders/attackers for their cost. They will remain your bread and butter for the entire game

I'm contemplating upgrading some of my troops. Do you guys think it'll be worth it to continue to invest crystal into upgrading my phalanx and archers? Or should I save the crystal for research and expanding my governor's residences?

Don't waste it on archers, they are one of the worst units in the game. Phalanax and swordsmen are 2 of the best investments you will make though.

Just remember upgrades wont kick in until the next patch which comes out sometime in the next few days.

Archers take almost 5 times longer to train, cost more then swordsmen in both resources and upkeep and don't get the attack bonus that swordsmen do when attacking. They are also inferior to gunsmen in every way and are completely obsolete once you get them while swordsmen and phalanx remain useful for the entire game.

okay brian i'ma have to ask you to elaborate. i guess i'm not seeing how the swordsmen beat archers even with the 30%? plus their defense is horrible. i guess i still dont understand the rules of warfare in this game and how it works...

I agree with Knighthawk about the swordsmen. A fully upgraded swordsman would have a base attack of 30 and defense of 23. Add the 30% attack and you still only have an attack of 39.

Compare that to the archer's base of 40-40, which can be upgraded to 70-70. I'm also already at the point where the increased cost isn't a big deal at all.

I do agree that the phalanx can be useful for quite a while.

Well basically archer has no real role, if you examine the costs and upkeep then its not worth it.

Upkeep of archer is the same as 2 swordsmen which on the offensive has more more attack then the archer and can be trained in almost half the time and at a savings of almost 100 wood and 50 sulfur. When you consider that during an attack you might use 50-60 archers easily then thats a savings of 6000 wood and 2500 sulfir in one attack alone.

The lack of defense might be a factor but they are basically a stop gap until gunmen which are superior in every way AND

Is the upkeep per unit per hour? So 5 phalanx is costing me 120 an hour? So, basically, I've got to keep a lot of gold to keep units in? How do you all handle this?

Yes, that's how it works. To compensate for it, you'll need to keep your population growing. Every citizen that isn't gathering resources or working as a scientist is making you gold. For example, here is my balance sheet:

Income Upkeep Amount
Franklin 1,829 682 1,146
Walpole 1,504 666 838
Boston 1,359 585 773
Cambridge -75 197 -273
Sum 4,618 2,131 2,486

I'm netting over 2k gold per hour because I have such a large population that isn't working on anything specific.

Is there a screen that shows upkeep total? Also, when I increase production, I can see if I am keeping gold + or negative, does that consider how much is going out for troops? If so, I guess I only really need to keep my resource gathering positive, right?

If you click on your gold it will show you income.

I currently make 4,330 an hour after upkeep of around 90 troops.

Using that gold summary is more accurate than whatever your saw mill or academy tells you. Those don't take into account other towns or any upkeep.

So I got attacked last night by Greanlnw from Forsaken City. Guy didn't get much - new colony, no defense. However, it does kinda piss me off. How do I find him?

I don't know - I can't find a link in the report. I know where it should be. I read the boards and this seems to be an issue. . .

Some guy on my island tried to attack me earlier. He'd tried, like, a month ago, and failed miserably. He failed far MORE miserably this time - at land AND at sea. Got a spy going over to him now to see if I can go for him.

You all use cooks or doctors?

Also, I'm curious - How do you garrison your towns? I've got 20-25 phalanx in each of my 3 with just a few ballistas. I want to get a few more ships, but I'm not sure what the best for resistance are (I'm not really much of an attacker).

the trick to defense is you cant just have defensive power. the war rules are a little rough to understand but that Ikariam war simulation website that brian gave is a big help. have to see if i can find it in the old thread to post in here.

basically you need attack and defense units in your town. i use 15 phalanxes and 15 archers til i can get gunmen. sea warfare i'm all but done for. just cant decide or even want to build a big naval force.

Actually, I'm looking to get more navy-heavy as we go. As it stands, I have the largest in our alliance, though whether or not it's the best is arguable (I've kinda got a quantity over quality thing going on here).

I'm not focusing on a large army because it slows your growth. I will have gunmen unlocked in a few days which will vastly boost my military power.

Also FYI siege weapons are useless for defense. So get rid of em immediately. Their only purpose is to provide you an attack boost when attacking a players wall.

For right now just phalanax and swordsmen. No idea on numbers but it really depends on who you are pissing off. I normally keep about 20 of each for right now and when I get gunmen I will add another 5-10. I just try to increase my military to match my budget so i'm always making $3-4k an hour
