GameTZ PS3 Folding Team Info!
Team name: GameTZ PS3
Team number: 91921
Team Stats!
|
A neat thing you can do on the PS3 is run Folding@home when your PS3 would otherwise be idle. And if you do any Folding, you should definitely do it as part of the GameTZ team!
If you're not familiar with Folding@home, it's a distributed computing project that basically uses your PS3's (or PC's) spare CPU cycles to simulate protein folding to study diseases. The Folding@home team then studies this data and also makes it available for others to use. It's a neat project for a good cause and is run by my alma mater (Stanford University) which makes it even better. |

Yep, it's the icon in the Network column, under the PlayStation Store icon. If a couple more people express interest, I will go ahead and set up a group. |

What exactly is folding@home? I'm kinda confused with the whole thing. I just got my ps3 this last weekend thought about downloading it but didn't know what it is. I know it has something to do with studying diseases but do you do anything with it? |

It's a project where people over the world donate their PC or PS3's spare CPU cycles to simulate protein folding. The Folding@home team then studies this data and also makes it available for others to use.
We (individual folders) don't really do anything with it... it's just something you can run when your PC/PS3 would otherwise be idle, and is for a good cause. |

Okay, so it's allowing them to use spare computing power to help do their studying. Might as well do it. Thanks for the explain. |

Some really nice additions to the Folding@Home program:
You can set a timer to turn off your PS3, either after a certain time, or after the current work unit is completed (and after it sends the data to Stanford).
While folding, the PS3 can play music from the PS3 hard drive. |

Is there any way to have your PS3 doing this in some sort of standby mode? I can't leave it on all the time simply out of paranoia. My wife and I were watching a Blu Ray one night and the damn thing went into some sort of protecting from overheating by making the fans freak the hell out. Now I can't close the cabinet door unless it's off

If they want to pay me to use my PS3 fine, but I'm not giving away PS3 life for free. I don't care what people say, it will lower the life-expectancy of your console.

Maybe, but I believe it would be negligible.
Congrats GameTZ PS3 on breaking 100 work units folded! |

Bump since we have so many more folks with PS3s now.
Yell if you have any problems signing up... it's been a while so I'm not 100% sure if the team still works right. |

i'm never sure about this. there's a decades old debate about whether it's better to leave your computer on all the time vs. turn it off when you're not using it. obviously, there's a power usage issue, but the crux of it is that the power surge of turning a unit on is potentially more harmful to life expectancy than a (relatively) constant steady flow of power. Same goes for something like a car - I've heard if you're only going to leave your car for a minute, it's better to just leave it idling (uses less gas too). That said, I'm not a car mechanic nor an electrician, though my father is an electrical engineer and sides with the 'leaving it on all the time is probably healthier' side.
note that this is a pc debate, and not the ps3, but the same concepts probably apply as long as your ps3 is well ventilated.
More to the point, i'm not really arguing that one side is correct, or that one side is wrong - more that I think it's a wash. I think the debate is so close, with merit on both sides, that on an individual case by case basis it really doesn't matter. you might have the ps3 that's going to overheat one day, or you might have the ps3 that's going to have something get fried when you flip the power on.
all i really know is that over the years, i've done both with my desktops and laptops. usually, due to background processes and work responsibilities, i leave my computer on all the time. and it's never been an issue in... decades. my last laptop was on for practically 5 years straight, except for the occasional reboot/crash.
i'd think the ps3 is similar. i've left it on for extended periods - both due to active use and forgetfulness. I don't sweat it either way.

In over a year of me owning the ps3, i still have never folded. I'm in the same boat with virtuadept on this one.

I know i said i'd never do this, but what the hell, i'll give it a shot. I leave my ps3 on for multiple hours on end anyways, and it's been fine thus far.

My family is way too poor to afford the electricity to keep this thing running that long (truly). Its a cool idea though.
