I started playing Ratchet and Clank last night and I really couldn't believe how much I was enjoying it. I haven't been so quickly and deeply engrossed with the gameplay, characters, and world of a video game since Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. The game on its basic levels seems really simple, but I think that's part of why I find it so endearing. The world, though is so vivid and full of life; it reminds me of seeing Deep Canvas in Disney's Tarzan for the first time (not that the two share similar styles, but rather, the impression the two left on me was similar). I'm not very far into the game, but I'm hoping to get 5-7 hours in over the weekend. I'm really excited to see all the weapons in action and just see more of the world. And oh - the writing and directing in the game is really good, too.

*yes* cool... I really should get this game too. I love the first couple PS2 Ratchet and Clank games.

Yeah I've been playing this game with my 5-year old daughter and both of us have been enjoying it. Good game. The graphics are nice, the voice acting and all is great. The gameplay is slick.. I never really played any of the old ones. Thinking I should check them out after this.

This is, by far, my favorite PS3 game so far. I was excited for it, and it blew away my expectations. I probably beat it in a little over a week, which is really rare for me to do.

I ended up playing a lot more in these past couple days than I expected. I was up until 3:30am Saturday morning looking for those gold bolts and I probably added another 3-4 hours this afternoon. Obviously, I'm hooked. Some thoughts and questions now that I'm further into the game:

- Are the gold bolts useful for anything?

- Anyone have any weird glitches? So far, I've had two: when I first tried playing the game, I was told that I didn't have enough space on my hdd. I looked into it, and apparently it's a common problem that's alleviated by deleting or adding 500mb worth of stuff onto the hdd. Just wondering if anyone else had that issue. My second glitch was a bit more worrisome: as I hopped into my space jet thingie (right after leaving the fight festival for the first time), my screen went black and I got about four lines of what looked to be code. I had to restart the PS3 (my controller wouldn't work) and I haven't had any problems since.

- I enjoy how huge the game's story feels. I really get the sense that I'm participating in something much larger than just Ratchet trying to beat Tachyon to the Lombax secret. I don't know if it's all the travelling between worlds, or the little bits of Lombax history that's slipped into the dialogue, but the game just feels...epic.

- I also like the little diversions from the main gameplay: playing as Clank, and shooting pirates in space. They're probably overly simple, but I like having them in small doses to vary the gameplay.

- So far, I think the platforming bits are a little too simple as well. I like the balance of platform and action (in which there is a lot more action than platforming, but - for me - there are enough platforming elements), but a lot of the platforming sections feel like filler (with a handful of exceptions) as opposed to part of the challenge of getting to where you need to go. That isn't to say the platforming parts aren't good, just that it often feels like the platforming elements are just puzzles to work your way around as opposed to an integral part of the level design.

- I thought "Mustachio Furioso" was ridiculously great.

- Aiming in the game is a little problematic. Usually I'm ok because I'm firing into large groups of enemies, but when I have to gun down a single, smaller enemy it can be a pain. The aim mode helps, but it feels a little too slow.

I think that's it for now. I'm sure you're all excited to read more *raspberry*

I love Ratchet & Clank Future as well. Though, I've never played any of the previous ones so I don't know how it stacks up. So far I've mostly been watching my boyfriend play through, but I will be definitely been playing through myself as well. *smile*

From what I understand, the gold bolts are used for buying new skins to play with. Sort of interesting, though I'll probably be sticking with the default one.

Thanks, Helen. I checked them out: they're pretty fun, but now that I have the Trillium armor (I'm on my second playthrough), I'll probably stay away from the skins for now. I ended up beating the game on New Year's Eve and I think I did a lot. I had about 18 gold bolts, the RYNO IV, and all of my weapons except for three were fully upgraded and at lvl 5. I'm currently working on getting all of the Omega weapons up to VX. I'm having a lot of fun with the game (obviously) but I've been slowing down a lot lately because of Mass Effect and a few other titles. I also beat Uncharted last week...another great title that I'll probably post about.

Indeed. Ratchet and Clank and Uncharted are two of the best games on ps3 right now.

Wondering if there is a glitch in R&C. At this part:

Ublik Passage

urn the bolt and cross the newly extended bridge. There will be a weapons ven-
dor before you cross if you need it. At the other end, toss a Swarmer to take
out the 5 pirates. As you near the hole in the center, another large robot
pirate emerges. Take him out and then prepare for 4 Necrophyds appearing. Once
every enemy here is defeated, a new bridge will connect you to the next area.
Kill the club pirates and cross it. I am unsure if it is a glitch or if the
Raritarium crate housing the Necrophyd after you cross actually moves towards
you or if it was supposed to remain still. But anyway, left of the Necrophyd
is a few real Raritarium crates to smash. You ultimately want to go the other
way of the bridge. Look towards the left and you should see a grated walkway.
Take it, killing the turret pirate and anything else in your way. Fill up at
the weapons vendor and board the barge at the end.

I cannot get the barge at the end to move.

Anyone else experience this issue? My 3 year old is dying to continue the game!

Thanks!

I didn't have any problems going through the game; I'll run through that level tonight and see if there might be something you/your son is missing.

Thank you.

I get through the area with the round hole in the floor and the second walkway extends. Then, you are to go down a short corridor to yet another walkway that, at the end, is a vendor and the barge. It looks like I should be putting the decryptor or something there but that automatically shows up when needed. Even changed into a pirate to no avail.

It's been a month since I played, so it's all fuzzy.. but, I do recall getting confused as to which way to go once or twice.

The only stray thing I can think of is maybe the ship needs one of those whirlbirds to lift it up for you? (wild guess)

I may try to play through it too, but I'm not sure if I can (I'm on the 2nd pass through, so I don't know if I have access yet).

Sorry, Sheesh. I’m in the same boat, too but it looks like I’m not too far from there. I wasn’t able to get there last night, but I should be able to get there this afternoon.

You might be right.

Right before you get on the barge, there's a small platform that you jump onto - this needs a heli-pod. That will lift you up so that you can get onto the barge. Once you get onto the barge, a short cut-scene begins, and the barge moves automatically.

So, Sheesh - if you're acutally not standing on the barge and are standing on the small platform with the glowing yellow circle right before it, you need to use the heli-pod. However, if you've already done that, and have boarded the barge, then there is probably something wrong with your game. The barge started moving for me as soon as I boarded it.

I haven't used the heli-pod! And, you are right: I am stuck at the "taxi-like" thing with the yellow circle. This would be the first time I'll use and I thought the description of the gadget made it sound like it was a long range weapon.

I will try this! Thank you both!

You're welcome.

And, I'm glad you didn't go into a shootout armed with nothing but the heli-pod. *raspberry*

When stuck like this, I refer to the FAQs on GameFaqs.com. I only checked the top three available, and none said use the helipods.

I've been trying more and more to tough it out with games, to figure it out myself. I recently got The Orange Box and have been playing Portal and Half Life 2. I"m stuck on #18 in Portal, about 3/4 through the puzzle, I think. I'm not going to give in! It took me an hour getting through what I think is the first of many helicopter sections in Half Life 2 before I figured out I needed to run and hide (instead of being a dope and shooting) by opening a door and going in - one of I recall 3 doors and the only one that opened.

I kinda feel like a dope now with R&C and thank you again *smile*

I definitely wasn't excited to keep playing but I did find it to be enjoyable for the most part. It just didn't do anything new...that was my biggest problem with it.

Thanks, Jaric, bill. Your direction helped me.

Finished the game last night. While I enjoyed the game, I agree with Steve, above, regarding the lack of new experiences. In fact, I'll argue that it is stripped it down from previous versions, particularly with the lack of wheeled vehicles and online play. The value relative to the price tag is questionable.

Still, a solid game that my little one and I enjoyed.

Wonder what the rumored future down-loadable content will be like....

Well, see, like i said, this was the first ratchet & clank game i ever played. Which is probably why i enjoyed it more. I should probably pick up some of the back catalog of the r & c series. Which are the best, and which are the worst?

I think they are all enjoyable! I don't think you can go wrong spending time with any of them, particularly when the first three are bargain bin prices. *smile*

If I were to buy one, I think it would be Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal. Lots to do with online, too.
