So i have a 40GB ps3. i know that there is no software emulation, or hardware in there to run ps2 games. but i noticed in the playstation store, that you can download psx games and run them off the hard drive, so does essentially mean that i can play ps1 games if disk is inserted into the ps3? or does it only work if the games are downloaded from PSN onto the hard drive?

Yup, it works with all PS1 games as far as I know, obviously no PS2 though

I believe 40GB PS3s are backward compatible with PSone games, but not PS2.

That is correct. The 40GB model is PSOne compatible but does not run PS2 games. Both the 60GB and 80GB models are 70% backwards compatible with PS2 titles out of the box. Most PSOne titles work with all systems. There may be a stray title or two that won't work, but most are probably so obscure that it does not matter much.

I tried playing Hot Shots Golf 2 and it was nearly unplayable. There was such a lag when I hit the button versus when it registered that I couldn't play the game.

Wonder what people will do when their 60GB eventually dies. Would people find a way to fix those or just give up their PS2 collections at that point (assuming PS2 releases are completely gone at that point).

At first the compatibility was a big deal to me, but now i've accumulated over 30 ps3 games, and won't be playing any of my ps1 and ps2 games for quite some time. I also still have my slim ps1 in great working condition, and i'm sure we'll see a pricedrop for the ps2 shortly, down to about $99. When it makes it to $99, i'll just pick up another ps2, since i sold mine when i got my ps3. Glad i ended up getting the 80gb instead of the 60 like it was supposed to be, my harddrive is starting to fill up.

Yeah I'm glad I have an 80 as well for that extra space. I'm thinking about going and getting another harddrive

I have a 120 gb external hard drive, which i hope would work, but i'm not sure. If i run out of space sometime, i'll just get a large sd card or something.

I picked up a fully BC 20GB 6 months ago for $300. I then put a 100 GB HDD in it for $25. I'm glad we did, as both my kids and I play our PS2 games quite frequently (that, in addition to our growing PS3 collection).

My bet is that certain PS2 games will be "remastered" to sell on the PSN (kind like PS1s, no?) to get around the BC issue. Of course, to make more money, too.

You don't/can't. BC is hardware/firmware/whatever rather than a simple storage problem.

Right. The 60GB system has actual PS2 chips and what-not in it...the other models don't.

As for me, I got a 60GB just cuz I found a great bundle. BC usually isn't important to me at all but lately I've been replaying a ton of PS2 games so it's worked out really well.

Borrowed Uncharted from a friend today, hoping to fire it up soon...

Yeah I really don't care for the BC, but it's not bad to have just in case. Planning on picking up P3:FES here soon and I'll play it on my PS3 mainly because I can, though I could just as easily toss it in my still-hooked-up PS2.

Glad to hear you are enjoying...my only minor complaints are too much shooting and the climbing/scaling system they did was EXCELLENT! I actually wished that they put more advanced climbing puzzle-type segments in there.

I loved uncharted. It reminded me of what used to be good about the first few tomb raider games.

The only thing I didn't like about Uncharted was the ridiculous amount of fire it took to take down the baddies. Bunch of dudes running around in tank tops and open shirts taking 8-10 bullets to the chest. It got a little frustrating. Great game otherwise though.

My issue with Uncharted was that I thought it was going to be more Tomb Raider than Gears of War. And it was like 90% Gears of War...and I got sick of the shooting real quick. But I still want to get the game again to finish it.

The only issues I had with the shooting aspect of the game was that, as previously mentioned, the enemies normally took an unusually amount of bullets before going down. But as far as the actual shooting gameplay was concerned, I didn't have any issues with it.

There was a lot more shooting than exploration/platforming, but I didn't have any expectations going into the game, so that didn't bother me. I understand, though, that if you were expecting/wanting more Tomb Raider and less GoW, it'd get tiring after the first few chapters.

I'll shift gears here: One of the coolest things in the game that I've never seen a game do is have the character's facial expressions reflect changing emotion during actual gameplay. If you watch closely, when a grenade lands close to Drake, his eyes get all bug-eyed and his face looks worried. Same goes for when he's hiding behind cover and enemies are shooting at him. He tends to wince like he's thinking "Oh crap". My wife is the one that noticed it and then I was paying attention to it and must say, I was very impressed.

I got an hdtv recently; after finishing up a few games, I'll be playing Uncharted again so I can better experience all the visual details such as the facial expressions.

Uncharted might be the prettiest game I've ever played.
