What is the connection piece called where the male end of the HDD connects to the female end of the console?

They should be married first.

Damn you....I was like "alright a replay, maybe he knows.." wtf was I thinking. But I agree premarital sex is bad for electronics. The motherboard usually gets pissed because they didn't wait. If the motherboard isn't happy, no one is happy.
Seriously though, I'm not sure what type of connection that is. I've only heard of the thing that you can used be called X-SATA. I want to somehow get ahold of one and see if I can rig it to connect (and work) to a female USB end. Then external HDD's on the 360 would be a dream, and it's be read/write rather than read-only, via the other USB ports. I'd try it if I could get my hands on a broken 360 hdd. Keep your eyes open for meh?

I know it's been a while since you posted, but I discovered that the connection the 360 hard drive uses is a proprietary combination of an SATA connector and a power connector. While it's not yet possible to create/purchase an external hard drive that acts in place of the 360's default hard drive [EDIT: Yes it is, though not external - see below], it is possible to attach a hard drive via USB. These can't be used for Marketplace content, and I'm not clear if they work for gamesaves or not. Here're the links:

I know its also possible to swap the portable HD inside a 20gb X360 HD for a 120gb, that is if you can find the right 120gb portable harddrive (with a specific serial no). Cost a lot less than those fudging 120gb that microsoft sells for 200$. A buddy of mine did that and the 360 sees it like if it was a legit Xbox HD.

Karl's right, forget what I said before about replacement being impossible. Here's the end-all...
This PDF has pretty much everything you want to know about the Xbox 360 HDD, including how to upgrade to a Western Digital 120gb drive using HDDHackr 0.9.
This is the HDDHackr 0.9 page on Xbox-Scene. It has a download link, a lot of the same info as the PDF above, and some additional Q&A which you may find useful.
This is the Western Digital SATA BEVS-LAT drive that can be used for this hack. Take note that this is the only drive that can be used for the hack.
If you already have the hard drive enclosure, you're set as far as cabling goes - you'll just need T6 and T10 torx bits to get inside it - though if you don't have one (i.e. if you bought a Core), then internalization is always an option - see the PDF linked to above. Using XPlorer360, you can even transfer the data from your old (proprietary) 20 gig drive to the new (hacked) 120 gigabyte drive. Oh, and what do you know - that PDF has a section about that too.
Enjoy, and if somehow those links fail to answer some question, I'll be happy to do more poking around for you. |

Ah cool. Last I had looked anything up on it you needed some blocks from the official MS 120GB hdd to get a normal 120 notebook hdd to work in the casing and do all that through DOS with the HDDHacker, and possibly do some Hex work.
But does this render xbox live unuseable? I'd definitely like to have the extra storage but I only use xbox live when I need or want to d/l a demo or arcade game. I'll just have to look into it on a day I have more time. Thanks alot
