Does "Magic Gate Unknown" really Means a PSP Memory card is Fake?

Because I Have Had This Issue With 3 Diffenrt Memory Cards Purchase From Diffenrt Places.

One From Radio Shack, One From Virgin Both 4 GB's

and Most Recently An 8GB From Buy.com

And they All Say Maagic Gate Unknown In The PSP System Settings.

What Are The Chances Of This Happening With All 3 Cards?

Also About a Year Ago When I Had First Purchased My PSP I Had Gotten a 2GB From Ebay, At The Time I Dindt` know ABout Fake Cards And After About Maybe a Little Over A Month It Stopeed Working, So I Was Told That Would Have Been A Fake As They Give Up Working After A Few Weeks, The 2 4GB's That I Have Howevr Has Been Working Perfectly Fine For About 6 Months Now.

So I Was Wondering If There`s Any Other Way To Know For Sure Wether these Are Fake Or Not or Does The Magicgate Not Supprted Message 100% Verifies That It Is A Fake?

Mine actually said unknown too (It's a 4gb), but it works fine. I just had to format it, then save a game on to it to get it to be set right.

I've had my 2gb now about 3 years and used it ALOT. I bought it knowing it was fake because at the time 2gb cards were expensive and this was only about 1/2 the cost and ive never had a single problem with it, but to answer your question mine said the same thing under settings and it is fake for sure. I can't say that it's always that way but thats was my experience. But like RDTZ said once I formated it and saved on it it corrected itself.

But something tells me if you are buying them from sources like Radioshack,Virgin and Buy.com that they are probably legit. I got mine from a shady chinaman on ebay. :P

thats what i thought too,
My first card was from ebay, and thay gave up after a while, so i guess that was deinfitely a fake.

i`m just worried about selling these to someone, or if i will be able to sell as i`m sure as soon as i say it says unknown, no one will want it *frown*

Did you try formatting them? If so what did it say then? Its not like it hurts anything because they could always be reformatted.

Also even if you found out they are 100% fake, I bet as long as you told people up front and as long as they worked someone would still want them. Like I said I bought mine knowing it was fake and its been great. I personally would take a chance on a card knowing it was fake if the price was right, and I am willing to bet others would as well. But once its formatted it may be just fine, I would try that if you havent already.

One thing I noticed with mine was that (I cant remember the exact numbers, its been a while) even though it was 2gb you could actually only save something like 1850 mb on to the card. When I researched a real card I found out that a real 2gb card holds something like 1950mb or something(again I cant remember the numbers exactly)The point being there was a difference. So maybe if you formatted it and saw how much the available memory was and then looked up a real card of the same size from a reputable dealer(for example the sony store) and saw how much actual data could be stored on it, you would know that if they matched it is probably real.Just a thought, I cant say it will always work out but its worth a try.. I am typing through my phone because I am away, otherwise I would look for you.

and i`ve put almost THAT MUCH of Videos/Music on it and it hold it so the space is definitely there.
