Ubuntu 6.10 was released today. Anyone upgrade yet? I'll probably wait awhile before upgrading my work laptop. Make sure all the bugs are worked out. |

I disagree about waiting because they do a ton of beta testing before putting out the release. I have to upgrade my one Ubuntu Box because Edgy Eft has apt packages for Xen 3 and Dapper does not.

I had some upgrade issues with Edgy RC release. Nothing catastrophic, but it wasn't as easy as apt-get dist-upgrade. I also want to wait a bit so that the load on the server is less and it doesn't take forever to download everything. |

Just upgraded the work laptop. Only one minor issue (so far), had to reinstall the ATI binary drivers myself. |

After I upgraded to 6.10, my PC wouldn't even boot correctly. But after I did a fresh install, everything worked fine. |

Nice! What happens if you try to run Beryl but your machine can't handle it? Will it default to something that works? |

Yeah, it will prompt you for a choice during install I think.

Some time in the very near future I'm due for a wipe and reinstall. I found another tutorial on getting my wifi to work under Ubuntu, so I'm giving it another shot. I really miss Gnome. Windows is boring and doesn't make me interested in my computer. With Linux, I feel closer to my computer. Like back in the DOS days, only cooler.

Oh, I've spent plenty of time with Ubuntu and know my way around fairly well.
However, that wireless setup won't work for me. I have a Broadcom 4318 chip in my laptop. I had tried following the Wiki as well as the forum post it linked to and it just didn't work. I found this post on the forums that I'll try (same laptop). Hopefully I can get it running this time.

Did you reinstall yet, spb??
I'd like to try out OpenFiler or FreeNAS whenever I run into a few spare drives. |

Not yet. I'm going to wait until I go on paternity leave. Probably a couple of weeks still.

So far... not good. I can get to the point where my wireless card is recognized and I can even scan for networks and see mine right there. I installed wifi-radar to make this part easier. I'm able to see all the networks I normally can under XP, but when I choose to connect to mine (and I have the password entered as well) it goes... and goes... and then tells me it can't obtain an IP. Gah. I was up until 2:30 this morning screwing with it.
I'm reinstalling right now so I can start fresh with an alternate method.

Maybe try turning off encryption on you wireless AP, just to see if you can get an IP. According to the post you linked to above it should work. |

I place all the blame on Broadcom. If they'd either open up their drivers or just make a Linux version, I would have no problems at all.

I have an old Linksys WPC11 PCMCIA wireless card (I think it worked). It is only 802.11b, but you are welcome to it if you want it, spb. |
