I'm not sure either, I'll have to check. Anyway, some first impressions:

I played for a while this evening, between running the daughter around for VBS.

- Made a Warrior from Elyos, dinged him 7 this evening (I think the beta lets you get up to 10?).

- Graphics are astounding, and run so smoothly it's insane. GREAT engine. The character models are amazingly detailed, and the little of the world I've seen is varied and beautiful.

- Most of the quests are pretty standard, but I did run into one instanced quest that was pretty neat, curious to find more.

- This feels like what I would think FFIV would be, the Eastern grindfest melded with a more Western quest sensibility. I likes it.

- Music is great, and there's quite a few differing themes in just the few areas I wandered through.

- Can't wait to fly at level 10, looks awesome.

- Wha-? No inverted mouse option? BLOWS. However, I did read an interview and the dev mentioned they were going to add the option before release here in the US. Crazy Koreans...haven't they ever flown a plane? * wink *

- There's barely a glimpse at gathering. I want to see some crafting.

- Not many abilities by level 7 to really get a feel for the warrior class (which divides into two other classes eventually, and you must choose one or the other), but seems decent at solo, but with zero ranged abilities so far. Nice little defensive ability, though, which buffs you up but you break out of it if you attack with an offensive ability (but auto-attack does not break it).

Glad I reserved it, looking forward to the next beta weekend to get more playtime. Definitely wanna check out the bad guys, their character models are insane.

Hmm... looks like I could just preorder it from Amazon since it would be very easy to cancel it later. Maybe I'll do that if I can't find any contests/giveaways. By the way, here's the dates according to Amazon.

# June 19-21 (explore the Elyos race and select zones)
# July 3-5 (explore the Asmodian race and select zones)
# July 17-19 (explore the Asmodian race and select zones)
# August 14-16 (explore both races & the abyss)

The level limit has been raised to LV 20. When you get LV 9 you can do a quest to get your wings and change class then game starts to open up. The city of Sanctum is awesome in design. I have not touched crafting either but I read a forum post were somebody really praised it. I am only LV 11 Gladiator but now starting to get crafting quest so I guess its time for me to start doing it. I did not really get a chance to play much this beta weekend because family came to town but hopefully next beta weekend I can get some real play time in.

I don't see the hype either, technically; there really hasn't been any hype, that I can tell.

But, I agree with Korvenus, it's a solid, polished, fun MMO from what I can tell, with a more Asian flavored them mixed with traditional classes and such. Anyway, I like it, I've had a good time today, and I've played it longer than any recent MMO (can't seem to stick with em much nowadays).

Actually, if you're waiting for FFXIV, not sure why you might find Aion so boring. This feels a lot like an advanced FFXI, which is mostly what I expect FFXIV to be, but that's just in my head * wink * .

That said, I think SWTOR is gonna be mind-blowing, amazing and the next evolution in the genre.

I played through the korean beta of Aion.

While it isn't bad, it isn't the next step in the genre either. The animations suffer from traditional NCSoft issues; clipping abound and generally lacking. The environments also suffer from NCSoft issues; beautiful and engaging.

I played everything to 10, some more than once. I enjoyed Ranger (or was it scout) but was very disappointed with the macro capabilities. The built in possibilities for combos seem like macro heaven, but alas, the system is stiff and not very forgiving.

I didn't get into much crafting, but the PvP areas were fun and engaging. The upp'd exp reward for leveling there instead of the noob zones put me on edge and really made me more alert and aware of my surrondings. I think that helped in learning what my class could and could not do at a quicker pace.

Wings look gorgeous and flying isn't bad, but suffers. The world is big. Really big.

I might play for a month if they release some more end-game content (I hear its fairly limited at the moment), but I'll probably wait for 14.

Intresting little post a guy made about the game.

I have to begin by noting that we are testing 1.1 and that we are playing 2 patches behind what is supposed to be the retail version. Apparently many are unaware of this fact. Why? I have no idea, but my guess would be to contribute it to a lack of reading comprehension.

1. PvP. I have to assume that those complaining about it are not aware that the "real" PvP doesn't begin until the Abyss at level 25 and above, not to mention the random portals that pop approximately every 2 hours, allowing for some great, unexpected World PvP. Wait for it, it's coming.

On the other hand, we have people in here asking about PvE servers and zones. Obviously you have not been following this game for very long.

There is this amazing concept called PvPvE.

There is PvE, there are dungeons (though few) with more on the way. There is even PvE in the Abyss. Yes, you will have to PvP in the aforementioned PvE dungeons to compete for the Boss', just as PvPers will have to PvE to take Fortresses, etc.

This is a PvP-centric game. The PvP comes before the PvE in PvPvE. Get over it.

2. Arena. Yes, Arenas have always been FFA until WoW. In fact, for those of you who didn't play prior to TBC, WoW had an arena, and it' still there, outside of DM and *gasp* it's FFA.

3. Read around before posting your reviews. Everyone has the same CONS to post, and yet, these same CONS have been explained time and time again. For Example:

A) Chat System. READ PLEASE, IT'S A BUG AND CHANNELS ARE NOT IMPLEMENTED YET.

B) Auto-Loot: It already exists, IT'S ON YOUR BAR BY DEFAULT. I mean, WOW. Some of you have to learn to slow the down and read crap.

C) Yes, you can move the camera while running. Edit: By popular demand, Shift + Right Click

D) Oh I almost forgot, YES you CAN auto-run. Shhhh, it's Num Lock...

E) "The game is a WoW clone, but it doesn't do this this or this that WoW does, thus it SUCKS". Really? Go back to WoW then, you Blizzard fanboys contradict yourselves so much you can't keep up with your own complaints.

Of course you're going to get influences from other games. WoW did, and still does to this day. Believe it or not, Aion is not a "clone" of WoW, L2, FFXI, EQ or any other game.

Fun Fact: Most aren't even aware that Aion isn't the first to implement non-mounted flight. I could say that Aion is a copy of Perfect World, except with a subscription fee. Would I? No, because it isn't even close, despite using flight as a major game mechanic and selling point.

4. Class Customization, or lack there of. The answer: Stigmas, which I admit, I myself do not know much about at this point. You do a quest at level 20 and at this point are given your first Stigma stone, which you can remove and sell to other players. Although stones drop from all monsters, they are more rare on common monsters and more common drops on rare monsters. As you level, you unlock more Stigma slots.

http://aion.mmosite.com/guide/system_stigma.shtml

What I do know from reading around: They used to be used to add other class' abilities to your own. Due to balance issues this implementation was removed, and they are currently working on other ideas.

There is most likely more information on this subject floating around, but I have yet to find any as of yet. If anyone has info on how they work currently, I'd be happy to hear it, as I'm sure others would.

Below is an old, but excellent thread on stigmas, which is still going.

http://www.aionsource.com/forum/gene...ma-system.h...

5. (Korean)Grindfest. No, Aion is not a grindfest. It's actually quite easy to level in this game. There are going to be points at which you can't solo quest the entire way. Get over it, this is how MMOs work. Believe it or not, being social is part of what makes an MMO an MMO, otherwise why not just go pay a 1-time fee for a console RPG and save yourself the monthly fees.

6. I have to say I'm pretty baffled by some of you who are complaining about the graphics. Seriously? I am not one for Conspiracy Theories, but it sure reminds me of the Warhammer forums prior to release, where they all cried about Propaganda posters being paid by Blizzard to come in and trash the game. Lol

Honestly, update your computer. This is not a matter of opinion, it's a matter of your hardware sucking.

7. Currency. OK, It is extremely easy to make Kinah in this game. Extremely. There should be no reason to cry about money sinks such as crafts.

Now, I understand and share the concern of some, in regards to Botters/Gold Farmers running rampant because of everything costing Kinah, but really, if money is this easy to make, do you really think it will promote it? Obviously it's inevitable, but I don't think it will be nearly as bad as some are anticipating.

8. Gameguard. It sucks, I know. It's here to stay, get over it.

9. "Whether you like to admit it or not, WoW is the most successful game in the genre, and the comparisons are not going to stop if you want to be on top". -

OK, here's the thing. I (and many) don't care, nor want, this game to top WoW. Historically, MMOs have been niche games, and I'm OK with that. I don't need 11 million subs to enjoy my experience; if anything, I have a much more enjoyable experience within smaller communities.

10. "Aion will fail". OK, let's do some simple math. First, this game is wildly popular already and still growing over in the Korea and China.

http://uk.pc.ign.com/articles/985/985368p1.html

3.5 million subs and growing.

Regardless of how it does in NA/EU this game is ALREADY POPULAR whether you like it or not.

Now, let's say the game sees numbers over here comparable to 200-500k a few months after release. This is what we call a successful Niche game. Do the math 14.95(200,000) = 2,990,000/month from NA alone. It will be and already is successful.

11. Gear. OK, this isn't as prevalent among complaints, but I figure'd some would appreciate the info. I'm aware that for many, including myself, that the aesthetic feel to the gear can be important for immersion. Or, you just want to look badass. Either way, in Aion you are able to not only re-color your gear, but you can also transfer stats from one set of gear to another set of gear that you like the looks of.

If you weren't around for the first beta weekend, and you don't think the gear is all that sexy, just wait. Around 15-20 is when the gear starts looking more intricate.

12. Death Penalty. I'm not sure how I managed to overlook this. For all you complaining about death penalties you're just going to have to get used to it. The fact is that the majority of MMOs implement this. It gives a meaning to death. In all honesty, the death penalty in Aion isn't even that hardcore considering you can pay to get a percentage back. There will be no more kamikaze ports to town anymore without it costing you. Live with it.

13. Subscription Fees. I lightly touched on this earlier. I'm seeing more and more posts about how Aion should be free. Why? Aion is head and shoulders above any FTP MMO out there. Here's how you should look at it:

With subscription fees come support. It's worth it.

Subscription fees are not that much to begin with. Consider it the price of 1 movie and some popcorn per month . If you're already paying for 1 or 2 other MMOs, then you have to make a choice.

Now, in China/Korea they can use gamecard where they are only charged per time played, not monthly. Unfortunately, we will not see this option in the US and most likely not in EU. It might suck for you, because you could save a few dollars a month, but you'll just have to suck it up.

EU is more per month than US but less for the game up front. I don't know what to say about this, other than you got the short end of the stick. Sorry.

14. Flight Mechanics/Controls. I'm not sure I understand why people are complaining about this. Let's make this clear for the simple-minded who cant grasp this concept without having it spelled out for them. IF YOU COULD FLY EVERYWHERE AT ALL TIMES THEN YOU WOULD REACH AREAS YOUR NOT SUPPOSED TO GO, FINISH QUESTS YOU SHOULDNT BE ABLE TO SOLO, AND BASICALLY BYPASS A LOAD OF CONTENT.

Note that you CAN glide everywhere. You may find it hard at first, but it's actually quite simple once you get the hang of it. Don't expect to pick it up and master it immediately. With practice you will find that gliding is easy and very helpful.

15. RP Servers. Let me be clear with this up front: I have No Problem with RPers whatsoever. There are no plans for RP Servers as of yet. This does not mean there will not be in the future, although I would not hold my breath. Here's the thing, You don't need an RP Server in order to roleplay. I understand alot of roleplayers prefer specific servers to keep others from making fun of them, or ruining immersion just to be a . All I can say is that I don't think you'll have that problem in Aion. If you do, call me a liar. My bad.

16. Bots. Since bots seem to be a major concern for some who played L2, I'd just like to add the following to my previous reference on the issue: CHINESE AION IS NOT RUN BY NCSOFT but rather a 3rd party company (Shandra?) whom is very lenient to the point that some may go so far as to say that they promote it. This will not be the case in NA:

I love it so far, can't stop playing. Just finished up an hour or two of play, almost up to 9 now, really enjoying my warrior. Grouped with a mage for the mines and the mage seemed hella nasty. Apparently she opened with an attack that slowed the creature, then had another that would knock it back as well, pretty sweet. Took us forever to find that silly pet, but the quest had me in stitches when we finally did * wink * .

I forgot where I got to in the Chinese open beta. Level 10 or 12, I think. For an initial open beta the game was pretty polished. It didn't quite have the motion freedom that WoW has, but it seemed pretty solid. Last I heard they were changing it around to be a little more of the tradition Korean grind type of MMO instead of it being completely quest based, has that shown at all in this beta?
