I am putting together a bit of a hodge-podge list of space shooters, but it will also include shooters along the lines of Contra, Megaman, Metal Slug, etc. Shooters, in general, I suppose, with a concentration on the space shoot-em-up genre. Consoles aren't a limit, as I'm starting up a new collection of older systems now that we have more space in the new house. The list is coming along nicely, thanks to the sweet ShMUPs list below from benstylus. But, I still need your help! Any recommendations to any good shooters on any system (no FPS) would be awesome. Thanks!

And the list!............................................

Life Force. Zanac. Alien Hominid has two long space-shooter levels, but it's primarily a platform shooter.

Oh, and of course, the LucasArts shooters: X-wing, Tie Fighter, X-wing Vs. Tie Fighter, and X-Wing Alliance. Perhaps Rogue Squadron. Then there's Wing Commander.

I don't know about Smash TV. Homeworld was more of a strategy game, than a shooter.

How about Descent and its sequels? There was also a less-popular Descent/X-wing hybrid, perhaps released by Interplay or Microsoft, but I forget the name of it.

Star Trek: TNG games on the Genesis. They had a lot of space-combat. There were PC versions around that time, too.

Oh, and we can't forget Atari classics like Missile Command, Space Invader, and Defender.

Can you tell that I have spent a great deal of my short life playing video games? heh. My mom isn't happy about that, but at least I got my college degree, so I have some redeeming value. heh

Life Force was so awesome. You are inside the body of a gigantic space alien, fighting fiery intestinal parasites. Then, the final boss is the alien's heart, protected by a defense mechanism called the Soul.

It reminds me of a level that was, I think, in Final Fantasy II for the SNES (I think that's V in the Japanese numbering). In that level, you entered a robotic colossus at its feet. Then you climbed your way up from the bottom, fighting various electronic organs. Finally, you fight the CPU.

I love microscopic adventures like that. There was also a level in Counterstrike: Source called de_mouse, where you fight inside a giant kitchen using mouseholes, stoves, and refrigerator parts.

LIST UPDATED 12 AUG 06

I stopped after the Saturn. My hand was tired of typing. Most of the games have been taken from the ShMUPs site, as noted in the original post. Seems a very large percentage of shooters are import only.

It's still a viable genre in Japan (though uncommon).

It's very rare to see a shooter over here in the states nowadays

Some additions for your list (all JP unless otherwise mentioned):

Dreamcast
Under Defeat
Radirgy
Trizeal

Gamecube
Chaos Field (This one actually got a US release)

Playstation 2
Homura
Raiden III
Twinkle Star Sprites: La Petite Princesse
Mushihimesama
Ibara
ESPGaluda

I've got more that I'll look up a bit later... but I know the anthology discs have some shooters (Namco Museum, Capcom Generation, Sega Ages, Taito Memories, etc.)

Added! Thanks!

I'm going to have to go through and denote which are Japanese, and which aren't. I quit early on. I'm also going to have to look into getting a) quite a few new systems and b) enabling the play of import games on them. I'm looking forward to slowly collecting a few of these.

Few more Saturn games that you left out:

Layer Section/Galactic Attack are alternate names for Rayforce

Sega Ages Memorial Selection vol. 2 (includes Star Jacker)

Capcom Generation vol. 1 (includes 1942, 1943, 1943 Kai)

Capcom Generation vol. 2 (includes Ghosts n Goblins, Ghouls n Ghosts, and Super Ghouls n Ghosts)
I think they belong on the list because the gameplay is essentially the same as something like contra - just instead of guns you're using spears or knives.

Capcom Generation vol. 3 (includes Vulgus & Exed Eyes)

Capcom Generation vol. 4 (includes Gun Smoke, Commando, and Mercs)

Cho Aniki - Kyukyou Otoko No Gyakushu

Keio Yugekitai (shooter/platformer hybrid)

Metal Slug

Wolf Fang

Also, what about games like Space Harrier and After Burner? They're essentially the same gameplay, except scrolling inward instead of side to side or top to bottom. There are quite a few of those out there.

Actually, I think it has all of them, if I'm not mistaken.

That means the only benefit of having the Saturn versions is the ability to play them with a proper controller ;)

Not sure why your putting stuff like global defence and quartet in a Shumup list. Also why not on your list put which ones are us and which are japanese, etc.

You might as well include Arcade games, since that's where you find the best shooters available.

1941
Capcom
1990 (released)
3rd in series, lots of weapons and great graphics. I like how you can rub the walls and spin your ship!

1942
Capcom
1984 (released)
The first WW2 plane style basic shooter. Still very addictive after all these years!

1943
Capcom
1987 (released)
2ND in series, much better looking with weapon powerups and a life guage.

19XX
Capcom
1996
4th in series, more akin to Cave's output in gameplay style in later levels, while retaining classic Capcom design, see review.

1944: The Loop Master
Capcom / Raizing
2000
5th in series. Hmm. Not my favourite in the series, but playable enough. Expected a lot more after 19XX.

Acrobat Mission
UPL
1991
Average describes this fairly nondescript vertical shmup.

Aero Blasters (PCE review) / Airbuster
Kaneko
1990
Good fun side scroller with some unusual graphics and difficult sections. Bit of a classic! Got some great MD and PCE conversions.

Aerofighters (snes review) / Sonic Wings
Video System
1992
One of the first shooters to give you a large selection of ships to choose from.

Aero Fighters 2 / Sonic Wings 2
Video System
1994
More of the same…

Aerofighters 3 / Sonic Wings 3
Video System
1995
More of the same…

Airbuster / Aeroblasters
Kaneko
1990
Good fun side scroller with some unusual graphics and difficult sections. Bit of a classic! Got some great MD and PCE conversions.

Air Duel
Irem
1990
Average unspectacular shmup.

Air Gallet
Banpresto
1996

Ajax / Typhoon
Konami
1987
Unique shooter that alternates between overhead helicopter shooter and behindview jetfighter divebombing shooter.

Alcon / Slap Fight
Taito
1986
Great early shmup with loads of powerups and some great level design, poor Megadrive version.

Alpha Mission / Armored Scrum Object
SNK
1985
Destroy ground targets to release special weapons, which can be used when you have enough energy.

Alpha Mission 2 / Armored Scrum Object II
SNK
1991
Sequel to above.

Arbalester
Seta
1989
Vertical plane shooter,

Area 88 / UN Squadron
Capcom
1989
Great manga based horizontal shooter, has health bar and your plane smokes and falls apart as damaged.

Argus
Jaleco
1986
Vertical shmup where screen scrolls slightly to left and right when near edge of screen.

Armed Formation F
Nichibutsu
1988
Vertical format, bio-organic style graphics

Armed Police Batrider

You can't go wrong with the Touhou series. They're excellent and fairly cheap.

Embodiment of Scarlet Devil
Perfect Cherry Blossom
Imperishable Night
Shoot the Bullet

and for versus shmup action, try Phantasmagoria of Flower View.

You should be able to get most/all of them at www.paletweb.com

I've bought from the folks at palet multiple times and they get the benstylus award for courtesy and service.

Do avoid Steel Savior as it has that StarForce crap on it (though I don't know if it did under its original name T-Zwei).

Would you include mission-based shooters like the Strike series? And since you're including run 'n guns like Contra, how about top-down shooters like Ikari Warriors?

TerminasluT - I have Angeraze 2 downloading now, and Kamui installed. I also have Idinaloq downloading. Thanks to you and Ben both for the great links and list help * smile * .

j_factor - the Strike series would be fine, and Ikari Warriors too. It's not a pure shmup list * smile * .

Prey - Hmm, Expendable...I'll have to look it up. I think I played it, but I don't remember what it was like. I gotta get a new DC * smile * .

Cool Angeraze 2 is one of my favorite, its a lot like Espgaluda gameplay wise only in a horizontal setup. Great soundtrack!

Kamui is really exellent , its all in 2D but the effects are really great. Quite similar to Raystorm or Layer Section in gameplay but IMO much better!

Idinaloq, is one of the better freewares out there. good pick!
