What do you think? Will this be worth a lot later or end up being worthless?

Why would likely the most popular game of this generation so far be limited? I know BioShock was, but this is GTA4 we're talking about

I doubt this is going to be limited, pretty much every store is carrying it and for it to be such a big title doubt they would limit it.

It's another Legendary Edition, except this one isn't too much more money and actually comes with something you can use. I'm sure it's not limited as in there will probably be several hundred thousand produced, but they will sell out quickly. |

Rock Band Special Edition is going to be rare. Go to all major retailers and pick up the 124 or so copies they each have.

The only thing that might become 'rare' is the exclusive license plate each individual retail has. I know Amazon has there own, but from what I understand GameCrazy has one completely different. With GameCrazy paling in size, it might be your best bet to grab it from there if you do go for the SE.

I can't see the plate or other CE crap outweighing the decline in price over the game over time (ie. if you purchase it now, in 5 years the game will be worth $10 and the CE crap won't be worth the buy-in). As a rule I never buy CE crap unless it's crap I actually want to keep, regardless of it's worth.

This is no worse than DVDs having "special editions" that you can find everywhere. I don't believe they're calling it a limited edition, so it's really just a way to get more money out of the consumer by offering crap that likely no one will ever use (like every other special edition on the planet). |

Yeah. I should offer Special Edition shipping on my eBay sales. Throw in a sticker or something.

All CE's are a joke because they contain nothing a collector would want if it wasn't artificially limited in production. Give me an actual beta disc of the game, hand drawn artwork, or some other thing the developers actually used, that would make a CE worth buying, and every one would have to be unique.

I think we're all just lucky that Crackdown turned out to be such a great game.
Even when I was paying full price for it when it came out I totally had low expectations and figured they were just tricking me into purchasing a crappy game because I wanted the Halo beta so bad. |

Well, I don't want to overload on "genericsandbox game" too much if I'm playing one tonight.
But.. I did pull the game all the way out and put it in the vicinity of my 360. Maybe!!! Might just Brawl the afternoon off until GTA. |

Um, no. I was just saying that it had some very fun achievements. Stuff you actually want to do, not crap like "replay the game on a different difficulty" or "kill 10 million opponents online by shooting them in the left eye."

Tim is completely correct.
Crackdown had sweet achievements. You got them for throwing stuff far, climbing the tallest building, blowing things up, etc, stuff like that is way more fun then difficulty and online achievements. |

There's a difference between Special Edition, Limited Edition, and standard releases but most people (the retailers and devs included) don't seem to know the difference anymore. There was a time when Limited Edition actually meant it was limited...like, a certain number less than 250,000 made...and Special Edition basically should mean it's got more content (hardware or soft) than the standard version and with a slightly better price. the DVD market ruined the term Special Edition long ago. and now, even Limited Edition doesn't mean anything unless there's a serial stamped on it (#6000/100000) because you can "limit" your Limited Edition to 1,000,000 produced and technically it's still limited...to a million. |

I'm sorry, but < 250,000 does not constitute "limited." That is a HUGE number. . .
Not questioning your figure, Enix, but rather publisher's notions of "limited."

Yeah, I know 250,000 is not exactly "limited", but since 250,000 copies of a game sold is between average and below-average, I'd say that could at least fit into the legitimately limited category. |
Stiler
| | #33 posted April 29, 2008 at 6:43am (EDT) |
Mass Effect, Bioshock, those are about the only two recent LE's that were...actually limited.
Ever since Halo 2 I have never trusted buying an LE/SE if I buy it for the purpose of it's "limited" collection, rather I simply buy them if I think it's worth it/has something I want to keep.
I knew when Halo 3 came out with their LE/Legendary that neither of those would actually be...limited, and man was I right, the Legendary is cheap as hell now compared to when it was released and I feel sorry for all those people that paid 100+ for it.
I don't expect GTA4's LE to really be Limited that much, but I had $80 worth of unused gift cards for circuit city that I never used nor really thought I would since I never go there, but decided to use them on this and with the lock box and art book it's a couple of things I'd like to keep.
It'd be nice though if limited editions were actually limited. Somethin like <25,000 woulda been a good range I think. |
