It's not a question of $$, but rather a question of time. If you could pick just one, which one would it be? |

If the online for the Wii were even halfway decent (or if you have friends) I'd say Mario Kart, if not, GTA

OK.
It depends on your gaming and just general tastes.
If you don't mind/like the very graphic nature of what GTA is about then there is no question buy GTA4. If you're like me and couldn't stand it, buy Mario Kart. But make no mistake, GTA4 is a much better game.
Now if you're not interested in the multiplayer of GTA4, what would be a good idea would be to buy GTA4 then trade/sell it to get Mario kart for the Wii once you're done and play multiplayer on that

Mario Kart Wii absolutely does not interest me. That series is just blech now.
Grand Theft Auto IV, while I generally dislike those games, looks really good. |

The Wii version is fun though... kinda easier to have 4 people play on my Wii than have 4 people with DS. :) |

With Grand Theft Auto, you don't. You want to play a popular/cool/controversial game.
Grand Theft Auto is the Mortal Kombat of this decade.

What do you against it anyhow? They are fun to play...sure, people might get sick of it eventually like they did with MK, but for now it's a fun game, and it looks and plays pretty good too. |

What I have against it is that even though the game industry will vehemently deny it, they're largely targeting kids to buy this game - much like Mortal Kombat had success garnering a loyal fanbase of kids back in the 90's. The big difference is that back then, Mortal Kombat was mostly harmless - I don't recall hearing any stories of people actually ripping someone's head off their shoulders, spine still attached or of someone blowing a fiery kiss to immolate someone. The big problem with Grand Theft Auto is the same problem I have with most "gangster" oriented games - they may or may not be harmless, but at the very least they glamorize some of the worst crimes imaginable and may desensitize people to those acts. I just don't believe the industry's position that games like this have absolutely no effect at all on kids who play them.
Also, the whole "sandbox" style of gaming does not appeal to me in the slightest.
Plus, I can't think of a single Rockstar game that I've ever liked in the slightest.

The film industry has been glamorizing organized crime for 60+ years, I don't think thats ever stirred up any controversy. Yeah, games may be a bit more interactive, but its simply telling a story much like The Godfather did. We've been desensitized to this kind of stuff long before GTA came out. |

I do agree that basically showing off killing and other crimes isn't the best thing in a game, but in my opinion, it's only bad if it influences people to the point where either everyone, or one person in general goes out and does what's in the game. I mean, it's happened before, I'm sure, but I won't be going out and killing people because I saw it in a game, or any other kinds of things I see in GTA. Well, I probably won't be doing that because I rarely ever leave my closet, much less my room, much, much less my house. So I'm fine with playing games like GTA.
> Also, the whole "sandbox" style of gaming does not appeal to me in

I like Sandbox titles because in my opinion, they add some replay value to a game, if a lot of work was put into the actual world and not just missions, or etc. Sometimes it's just fun to ride around in a (stolen) car or other vehicle (especially tanks) for no reason whatsoever.

you honestly think that movies have never been criticized or scrutinized based on their content?
> Yeah, games may be a bit more interactive,
saying games are a bit more interactive is like saying jogging six miles is a bit better exercise than walking to the fridge and back.
unless you're talking about the metal gear solid series. I could see "a bit more interactive" being appropriate there.

Perhaps, but I'd bet there were a far smaller percentage of kids begging their parents to take them to see The Godfather when it was released than there are today begging for a copy of grand theft auto. Desensitization isn't just a one time thing - it's a continual process, and garbage like Grand Theft Auto is the most obvious current culprit.
And it's been brought up before, but watching a chilling tale about gangsters and what they have to do to make a living and maintain their power is far different than playing a game and "becoming" the gangster.

Hardly. I don't think that games like Grand Theft Auto should be banned - I just think that gamers should be mature enough that such trash is at the bottom of sales charts and so it disappears by default. It speaks volumes to the maturity of the average gamer that the GTA games are always the top sellers.
In other words, people who like Grand Theft Auto are poopooheads.
