let's see...

i don't know if there ARE any particularly famous series I've never played...

I guess the Battlefield games - they're pretty big name. Hm... any other popular EA franchises that got created in the last 5 or so years?

I've never played Tiger Woods / PGA Golf...

I MAY have played a Madden game on the genesis once or twice as a kid, but maybe not - never really was big into sports.

That's about it... Langrisser maybe? Oh and I guess Suikoden - even though I owned it for two years I never bothered to play it.

Just recently knocked off MGS1 from that list. Still gotta play Fallout, Okami, NOLF2, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy series... Mostly PC games and RPGs because they're so damn long and I lose interest in boring games and turn based battles.

Though the graphics are dated, play Fallout and Fallout 2 (you can skip Fallout Tactics).

That way you can potentially hate Fallout 3 like the rest of us with big hopes that will probably be let down. *raspberry*

Nah, but seriously. I doubt FO3 will live up to the others and I'd hate for your thoughts on the franchise to be

I should definately check those out then and keep my thoughts on FO3 based soley on that game. I never heard much about the first 2 and that's the reason for me never playing them now that i keep hearing great things i'll definately play them. I think Bethesda did awesome with Oblivion and if FO3 is half as good I'll be happy.

Dont listen to Richie, he hates Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, thats the only reason why he is doging. His brain just cannot handle first-person RPG goodness. Fallout 3 is going to be amazing.

While the first 2 are really great games, they are hard to play for impatient people because they are very slow games. That said, I love them both, but the series is in great hands.

Yeah, I guess it was silly for me to say skip it. I never played it; only heard it wasn't as good as the first two or
something. But I have the White Label Fallout Collection. Maybe I'll install it along with FO1 and 2 and check
it out myself....it'll be nice getting back into the wasteland. *wink*

I found it to be incredible. Hell I got it when it first came out and still play it every now and then. It's overflowing with incredible content. You easily get your moneys worth with a game like Oblivion. Who can dog when they spend $60 for over 100 hours of bad ass gameplay (if you do more than just rush through the main story)

Because I said so?

Fine, I'll make more of an effort.

Oblivion is, really, an action/adventure game with some secondary RPG elements, somewhat like GTA in a Tolkien setting. Unless someone's experience with RPG's is composed entirely of Final Fantasy type games, it doesn't take much to spot that outright. This doesn't ultimately mean the game is bad, it merely means it's not the game to go to if you're looking for an RPG, which was my desire when I tried it.

Possibly my biggest qualm with the game is the dreadful level-scaling that breaks the balance of the game and practically pins you into being a combat oriented character (unless you enjoy being constantly raped by enemies, anyway). And since loot and equipment also level up, bandits run around with rare “epic” armor and weapons towards the later half of the game.

Equally cringe worthy were the lock picking and dialogue minigames and the lame “every swing hits!” combat which completely disregard your character's skill and are instead dependent on twitch reflex button mashing. Statistics based chance was simply too “hardcore” I guess.

Then there's the interface, a clunky piece of crud completely inadequate for a PC game with its hideously large fonts, tabs within tabs, restrictive key mapping, etc., all of them a consequence of the games unnatural cross platform birth.

There were some other issues that annoyed me, such as a main plot that doesn't work with the “open-endedness” of the game, repetitive and uninteresting side quests, excessive handholding, the Radiant AI's less than radiant intelligence and characters being little more than cardboard cutouts, that in addition to their dullness looked like they'd bathed in a giant vat of primordial soup from Space Quest V so they're not even pretty to look at.

Oblivion's saving grace is that it has a large following of people capable and willing to mod the crap out of it (literally) to the point that it becomes a fairly decent experience. Out of the box, it's crape.

Oblivion's *is* a CRPG. I'm not going to belabor the definition with a page of minutia, better minds have gone into this, here and elsewhere, for years. I'm guilty as well. We'd need pages of text to further maul the genre's definition. I'm guessing you have a more historically accurate vision of what constitutes an RPG, perhaps derived mainly from paper-and-pen RPGs and proper PC CRPG's. I'm just guessing this from your page and your apparent dislike for the Final Fantasy type of JRPG. Perfectly acceptable point of view, we live in a gray world.

You must have played a different game. I play a mage type of custom character, and I do very well.

This would be another nod toward my assessment of your vision of what constitutes an RPG. I don't feel like I have to roll 1d20 to hit someone in every RPG I play, but some people feel like they do--fair enough.

> Then there's the interface, a clunky piece of crud completely inadequate

I agree with this. The interface doesn't sever it from the RPG genre, but it's definitely clunky. They should have created a better PC interface. (Cross platform birth is not really all that unnatural nowadays, but there have been some strange children.)

I agree with some of this. I didn't like all of the character art, or some of the side quests (I still haven't finished the game), but the hand-holding never seemed excessive, and the characters were less cardboard cutouts than they have been in past Elder Scrolls games.

Which brings me to your other point: Why is Oblivion NOT a good Elder Scrolls game? It's much the same as past games, on a smaller scale, but I don't miss hundreds of cookie cutter towns, randomly generated area, Daggerfall bugs, or jumping in place to raise my skill *wink* .

Nevermind, I can fathom your reasons well enough from the points you've made. I originally played Arena on a 486 SLC-50 laptop years ago myself, so I can guess where you're coming from *smile* .

shags

PS I appreciate your candor. I've had much the same argument with a friend from www.wargamer.com in the past. He's a brilliant bastard, and makes lots of great points about RPGs, past and present. I don't agree with half of them, but they're good points.
