I picked up a brand new 9000 series PS2 slim today to revist some old classics and games I missed out on years ago from gamestop.
One thing I noticed that's concerning me is it's loudness when playing the blue CD-ROM based games. When I played Shadow of the Colossus for a bit the console was near silent. However, when I played Maximo and The Thing (blue CD-ROM games), it became the loudest system i've ever heard with a constant buzzing and whirring motor noise. Whenever I put my finger on the disc cover the loudness dampened considerably.
Is it normal for the PS2 slims to be incredibly loud when playing CD-ROM games. I'm wondering if this system is defective out of the box and needs returned. |

I know some newer PS2's have problems reading older discs, especially since they're harder to read, and usually have more scratches. Try and see if it makes the same noises on another slim.

Alright, well it might sound worse than it actually is. I think the substrate board of the lower shelf of my tv stand might not be perfectly even, causing the system to vibrate more than it should. When I put the faintest pressure on the top of any part of the unit (even the solid piece beside the disc cover the vibrating sound will stop), same if I lightly lift the unit up.
But still, the slim is way louder when reading the CD games, can anyone with a PS2 slim confirm this as normal? |

Sorry I have a fat :p
But I know my friend has a PS2 slim and it has problems reading blue discs, plus it makes a lot of noise.

This information comes at cost of $1 PayPal (I expect it to be delivered):
When I had my PS2slim, there was one instance where it wouldn't even spin to read discs. I had to press on the lid to get it going. After further inspection, I noticed that it was sitting on an uneven surface (water damaged table with lil bumps). At which point, I moved it to a flatter, more secure suface and things were better since.
I have a poor memory, but if I were to make a leap .. I'd say that my PS2slim had some noise issues associated with it. With blue bottom discs, you ask? Could be. I really cannot be absolute.

Is your PS2 horizontal or vertical? I have mine vertical and it always buzzes with CD games. I believe the spindle needs to spin at different speeds for CD media, which is why it causes the vibration...it's not as noticeable for me when the PS2 is horizontal. But yeah, I'm pretty sure the buzzing is the lid. The slim has a crapty, cheap, thin plastic lid with a gap between itself and the console. |

I have a Japanese SCPH-90000 and it does seem like the fan is louder than the 70000-series. |
