> As much as I enjoyed the original New Super Mario Bros. on the DS, with its return to traditional 2D form, I couldn't help wanting a little more. Some new suits for Mario to power up with, the ability to fly, perhaps a return appearance by Kuribo's Shoe. Something. The game hewed to Mario's simpler platform beginnings, but at least it was a good blueprint for a new era of 2D Mario games.

>Also like Mario 3: this game is tough. There's a certain amount of controlled chaos that goes in on multiplayer games, mainly because the player characters have collision detection with each other. So you might jump on somebody's head at the wrong moment and send them straight down a pit, or fling a careless koopa shell right into your friend and kill them. Even in single-player, though, the game is pretty tough--I encountered some really tricky jumps involving big, rotating gears and a bunch of lava just in the castle at the end of world one.

Content and difficulty concerns somewhat addressed * yes *

2 sorta dumb questions -

1.Is this an entirely different game than NSMB DS?

2.Do you have to play with multi-player? Any single player?

It sounds dumb but i can't find answers to these simple questions.

Yes, completely new. Looks a lot better from screens. And you can play single player, that would be silly if you couldn't!

It can definitely be played single player. Miyamoto had said in an interview with Nintendo Power that the game was designed for single player, with the co-op multiplayer basically just added as a bonus I guess. There will be some rooms that you can't access in single player though.

Maybe, but they had 2-player multiplayer in New Super Mario Bros. Expanding it to 4 is an easy idea* and I'm sure he's had the idea for a while but the right Mario game just hadn't come along yet. They had to work on other big games in the GameCube's time, and having a side-scrolling Mario on N64 wouldn't have been such a good idea since Mario in 3D was so popular.

*Because they had the four controller ports on N64 and GameCube, and now Wii's 4 controller wireless.

Penguin suit. Awww.

One of the best things about this game so far, in my opinion, will be fighting over who gets to be Luigi.

Wait of course there's 2 Toads because 1 Toad and 1 Peach would just make too much sense.

I see people say things like "Getting all stars/shines in Sunshine and NSMB shows true skill." I must be some kind of gaming master then because I did both of those in a couple of days.

EDIT: I'm being sarcastic about the "gaming master" part BTW.

I doubt game's plot is vital. They could easily have changed it.

Why do you say that?

Anyway, the game is looking pretty good. Better than I had expected. I REALLY hope the music is just a placeholder, but deep down I know it isn't. That's the one thing that drove me NUTS about the DS game. If they would just get rid of that fudging female "BAH! BAH!" sample, I would be very happy.

For the same reason why I, and subsequently my father, was pissed about TMNT when I was a kid. It looks great, and frankly if it wasn't so hard it looks like something I'd want to own a Wii again for, but with it's difficulty you're probably going to have a lot of pissed off parents of whiny kids trying to return it to Walmart. If it's supposed to be on the same level as Contra (for the DS I assume the OP meant?), that's going to be a problem for a major face of the franchise and a system seller like this. Just an assumption.

I don't think the difficulty of TMNT was its first problem. It controlled like ass, which I suppose added to the difficulty, but I have a feeling that game could have been a lot easier/enjoyable if the controls were tightened up.

Mario has tried-and-true gameplay, so I don't mind Nintendo throwing a challenge my way. And I'm sure it's not gonna be balls-to-the-wall hard right off the bat. The difficulty will likely ramp up as the game goes on.

Personally, I'm glad Nintendo is kicking it up several notches with this one. Games aren't hard enough these days. Kids need to lose the sense of invincibility they get from playing videogames. Perhaps New Super Mario Bros. Wii will prevent future school shootings.

Like Guru said, they have this new thing where if you die a certain amount of times the game will offer to show you how to beat the level you're stuck on. You'll still have to beat the level, because I think when you use the guide it disables your option to save your game until you go through it yourself. But it only works in single player so if you and 3 of your friends suck, you have nobody to blame but yourselves and you should be ashamed.
This makes me want to play through the original Super Mario Bros. I've never beaten it. Level 8-2 is the closest I've gotten.

I am pretty damn psyched about this game. The ONLY thing that will take away some of my joy when I get it--and I am reiterating a thought I believe I already shared in this thread--is if they don't make new music for the game, and just recycle from the DS.
