I consider myself to be a Metroid Fanboy, but I can't seem to find a piece of information that I would like to know.
Metroid on NES had two releases. A Silver boxed copy, and a Yellow boxed copy with better art. I'm pretty sure the Silver box came first, being the one released at the end of 1987. When was the yellow copy released? Where did it come from? What was the point of the re-release? Does anyone know? I couldn't find much on google sadly... |

I think there were some gray boxed sets that came with the console. I know that I didn't have a metroid action set when I was a kid, but I had the gray box/cart. Doesn't mean it couldn't have came from one, but I don't remember. |

Yellow box one is "Classic Series" rereleased in 1992 (some say 1993). http://www.giantbomb.com/metroid/61-21761/releases...
It's basically the same as Player's Choice or Sony's Greatest Hits line.
Nintendo abandoned the gray box look in the late 80's and anything that got re-released after that had a new full-colored box:

Am I the only one that liked the gray "box" look? Seems more retro! |

I like the gray box better, but the art on the yellow is nice too. |

Interesting tidbit about the difference between the yellow and gray Metroids:
There is an extra byte of code in one of them. I don't remember which... I was looking at documented .asm's of the two (the decomplied code). No gameplay changes, of course.
