Got Star Wars: The Force unleashed the other day, popped it into my PS2 and here's what I think. The game overall isn't really a bad game, I wondered why it got such bad reviews overall, averaging about a 5/10 on most sites. I guess it's probably because everyone played the PS3 and 360 versions before and just hated this one? I personally have played all 3, and the PS2 isn't very bad compared to the others. Alright, enough of me rambling on about what I think. Now I'll tell you everything and let you decide!!
This game was produced by Krome studios, so it's a different producer than the other versions of the game, so the levels are WAY different. You also are missing some force powers and other tiny things. Krome studios are the ones that brought the Ty the Tasmanian Tiger series to us, so I wondered how they would do going into different territory.
The game starts out just like the 360 and PS3 versions, with you playing as good ol' Vader choppin' up some Wookies. For some reason I did not like the first two levels, as they were a little weird in graphics to me? By the 3rd level it starts becoming a very nice PS2 game, as the graphics sort of thin out and there is more light in the levels. The first Jedi you meet while playing as Vader's apprentice is a pretty cool boss battle. The bosses seem to take forever to defeat. It usually ends with them having a little under half of their life left and you press a random button (it gives you like "X" for example) and you must play a little rhythm-type mini game and destroy the boss. It kinda gets old after a while but the cut scene looks awesome! The force powers are a little lacking compared to the 360 and PS3 versions, but not that bad. The controls are a little crappy, in my opinion, especially when you try and do combos, which can be really frustrating sometimes. Another thing is that sometimes it just feels like you are button mashing and really can't tell what's going on, but overall that only happens maybe once or twice in the game.
Alright, as most of you know, the storyline of this game takes place between episodes 3 and 4 of the Star Wars time line. The game starts out, as I stated before, with you playing as Lord Vader. You go through the level and meet up with a "Rogue Jedi." You fight him, beat him, and this is where Vader meets his Apprentice, who is the Jedi's son, and takes him under his wing. The main storyline, without giving out any spoilers, is you going around doing Vader's bidding, which usually ends up you just killing Jedi that had escaped Order sixty six. I was also surprised to see that there were some missions where you end up fighting some Sith lords that Vader was worried would rise up against him. The whole time you are doing this, you are trying to prove to Vader that you are done with your training. Each boss that you meet, whether they be a Jedi or Sith, has a special attack that they use over and over on you, and you must figure out how to deflect it away from yourself and/or back towards them.
The game doesn't really seem to be lacking to me, especially as seeing this is a PS2 game trying to take on what was supposed to be a Next-Gen only game! Overall I give it a 4/5.
