Sequel to one of the best selling GB games!

Story Line

After defeating Tatanga (nemesis of the first Super Mario land), Mario leaves Sarasaland and heads home to Mario Land. When Mario returns home he sees that his evil cousin, Wario, has taken over. Wario cast an evil spell on all of the inhabitants of Mario Land, brainwashing them into thinking Wario is their leader, and Mario is their enemy. Wario's reason for taking over Mario Land? Simple, he has been jealous of Mario ever since they were kids, and he wanted to take over Mario's castle.

The game plays very similarly to the first Super Mario Land. Like the first game you must run around jumping on enemies, collecting coins, smashing blocks, traveling down pipes, and of course eating mushrooms in a platforming environment. This time around Mario has a new power up in addition to Mario's super mushroom (makes Mario grow in size), fire flower (allows Mario to shoot fire balls at enemies by pressing B), and starman (allows Mario invincibility for a short amount of time), that were available in the last game. Mario's new power up, magic carrot, allows Mario to jump higher, jump repeatedly by holding the A button, and float in the air for a short amount of time by repeatedly pressing the A button. In addition to the new power up, you can also choose the level you want to play next via the map screen (similar to that of Super Mario World). Another new feature is the option to save your game. This is a huge plus compared to the last game.

A lot changed graphics wise in three years. The graphics in this game are far superior to those of the first game. The first game didn't have much detail in it. The backgrounds were usually a color with few clouds in them. This time around the background has a lot of shading, making it stand out more. The detail in Mario and enemies is also a lot better. Mario isn't all blocky like he was in the first game. Enemies also are less blocky and more detailed and shaded.

The music in this game is great. The music is very up-beat, repetitive, and catchy. Some of the music in this game can be heard in other Mario games. The music in this game is a lot more up-beat then the last one. The music also fits in with it's surrounds very nicely.

It's no surprise that this sequel sold over a million copies. Super Mario Land 2 is a fantastic game! It corrects a lot of things the first game lacked, and is overall a great game. It's one of those games you must play if you own a GameBoy. If your a fan of Mario games, platforming games, and classics, I highly recommend giving this game a try. It's highly addictive and highly entertaining!

Fun Fact: This game was Wario's first appearance.
