"Damn the torpedos, full speed ahead!", Admiral Farregut, union civil war fleet commander. Bellowed this quote while "torpedos" (called mines these days) were blowing half his fleet out of the water. His remaining force followed his lead and pushed on, eventually winning the battle with some confederate forts.

"There is some good in this world... and its worth fighting for," Samwise Gamgee.

Radiant Silvergun is the best game EVER! *grin* *yes* w00t!

*ode to da shooter*

Its become clear to me in chatting with my fellow GTZers that some people just don't understand the greatness that is the video game genre known as: shooters. To help clarify what I think/feel about shooters, I have some asorted ramblings on the subject which will... if nothing else... demonstrate why I think they are the best game genre ever.

Lets start at the begining. Before there were even video games, pinball was all the rage in coin-op gaming. If you really think about it, shooters are the offspring of these wacky game machines. Just like in shooters, you must have quick reflexes and be able to react instinctually. When the action gets fast you aren't worried about strategy etc, you are just PLAYING the game. Additionally, in pinball you "shoot" the ball towards given objectives to score points. Many machines have small point getters and then big complicated ones as well (ala the shooters "Boss" characters). Of course, there are lots of differences too, but the point is that they share similarities with respect to how it feels to play the game, and what type of player you have to be to be *really* good at it. At any rate, the point of all of this is that this instinctual/reflex-based gaming experience is the ORIGINAL type of gameplay for videogames and has existed for as long as it has because that type of gaming experience has a way of being fun to people, it really is in the soul of gaming, and that experience is something notably absent from genres like common 3d platformers and RPGs. From pinball to Space Invaders to Ikaruga this type of gaming experience has evolved to such a high degree that it is much closer to perfection than any other gaming genre. I liken it to architecture, the Greeks and Romans evolved an architecture (we call it classical) to such a high degree over the centuries until, at some point, the type was generally perfected... and artists, seeing little room for improvement, began exploring other ideas. Shooters are similar in that the genre/experience has been highly refined, tuned, and perfected. Some developers have moved on to other things, but like the great classical architecture, the type lives on forever.

So what is the *best* thing about the shooter? Without question its what I call "The Moment". Not all shooters have moments... some shooters have lots of them. A shooter moment has 4 disinct phases. The time duration for all 4 phases combined is usually 2 seconds or less. Step 1: a second ago you were safe but the enemy has fired a bazillion bullets/rockets/bombs at you and the screen is filling up FAST... even to the seasoned shooter player there looks to be no escape, at this point some less-hardcore gamers might just drop the controller and give up. Step 2: In the midst of the carnage you see a "path"... a windy route you *might* be able to take which *might* mean have a chance of living another 2 seconds in the game. Step 3: using lightning quick reflexes and an incredible degree of dexterity you dive between bullets and juke explosions and JUST BARELY escape what had seemed certain death. Step 4: the afterglow of experiencing a moment... sometimes accompanied by a "who-hoo!!!" or a "no f-in WAY!". Sheer joy, against incredible odds you prevailed. The Moment is very similar to the feeling of pulling off a last second shot to win a NBA finals game or a 9th inning homerun to with the world series. Its a kind of pure joy that can make even the most oldschool shooter fan feel like he just played his very first shooter... and experienced his very first Moment all over again. The Moment is what real die-hard shooter fans live for (with respect to video games anyway). Its not the only good thing about shooters, but its clearly the best.

I'll add more to my ode to da shooter section soon...

Hello fellow GTZ'ers! I am a game collector myself and LOVE 2d fighters and shooters (no, NOT FPS!). Currently have the following systems connected/up-and-running: NES, SNES, NeoCD, NeoMVS (arcade cab, full size /w 25" monitor), Saturn, DC (x2), PS, PS 2, Lame Cube and Xbox.

Back in the day I played TFC all the time, dustbowl servs usually (like ISnet, Digital Mercenaries, !Gamesurf.de, Pete's Avanti/Dustbowl, or my clan's home server: The Bondsman). Used to play as "1_pist_engy", "American Crusader", "9_11 American Phoenix" or "DAMN the torpedos"...and I have found myself going back to good ol' "1_pist_engy" lately.

Rated the #3 TFC player in the world during the week of Dec 24-30 ;)

Now I play DoD almost exclusively. I'm a member of Dusty and play on their server all the time.

guns: no real former Marine can live without some kind of gun collection. Since I have got out, I have got some pretty cool stuff.

Rifle: Bushmaster/Oly arms pre-ban CAR-15. It has all the cool preban stuff, telescoping stock, short 16.1" bbl, HB, bayonet lug etc. Its in .223 cal (or 5.56mm for u metric lovers). This is a really nice gun, and feels right at home in my hands which are used to the M16 I carried in the Marines.

Shotgun. A mossberg 500. 12 ga, 18" bbl, choate pistolgrip+stock type stock (like a binelli has from the factory). very nice shotgun, nice smooth action and plenty of fire power. fun to shoot!

Handguns: 1) H&K USPf 9mm.
2) CZ52 super fun/cheap to shoot, high velocity 7.62x25mm

Assassins weapon:

Survival Arms AR7 in .22lr, with heavy bbl and telescoping stock. This bad boy is easy to break down to fit in a small briefcase, as seen in a 007 movie. Put it together, pop in a mag, and shoot! way fun. *grin* It can drive tacks out to 50 yards, which is plenty for hitman ops.

Pets: 2 miniture Dachshunds. Frank (brown fur, the wuss) and Fritz (black, the real Kriegerhund)...if I could have found one with slightly slanted eyes, I would have got him...named him Hirohito and completed the Axis!! *wink*

Past/Present jobs: former Marine infantryman, architecture major at Portland State University in downtown PDX. During summer term, I was a TA for the AutoCAD 2d/3d classes. Now I do security for Wells Fargo Bank in Portland.

People have been asking me what SNES boxes I have available...so here is a list...all are in great shape. Back in my Marine days, I didn't have a lot of storage room, so as soon as I got a game, I'd take the cart out...and fold the box and white inster thing back to their original shape (you know, flat, like a happy-meal before they open it to put chow in it!) and store them away. Not sure if that made sense...but in any case, I stored them seperately...one day, all my carts got stolen...and all I have left of them is these boxes. *wry smile* Anyway...

Demon's Crest
Beavis and Butthead
F-Zero
Punch-Out!!
Tecmo Bowl
Tecmo Bowl III: Final Edition
Return of the Jedi
Metroid (pend out)
NBA Jam: TE
Pitfall: The Mayan Adv.
New Horizons
Indiana Jones Grts Adv.

How my value system works:

* * * * * = I value this item HIGHLY and will only consider very good trades

* * * = I like having this item, but am willing to trade it for other things I want.

* = Will trade for anything on my want list, this is a trading site and this stuff is here to be traded!

So what are 2 or 4 stars? The grey areas in between. *wink* On my "wanted" list, the stars pretty much mean the same thing, 5 = I really want this! 1 = I'm interested, but dont expect much etc etc etc.

BTW, the number of stars is NO in any way based on dollar value. For example, if I *REALLY* want a light for a gameboy, it might be a five star...while at the same time if I sorta want 1941 for the SGX it might have just one star. Same goes for my available list...the stars are more a measure of how willing I am to trade something than its value (dollar or trading wise). Have a question? Just ask!

Other news/wants/comments!

I am currently looking in ANYTHING related to the Time Pilot games: side art, manuals, www links, PCBs, controller panels, marquee overlays etc as well as general arcade stuff...cabinets, monitors, control panels, etc etc. Have ANYTHING related or know where I might get it? Lemme know!

Need a Saturn modded? Let me know, I have chips and do installs CHEAP. If you have any questions at all about the Saturn, just email, I'm practically a walking FAQ on compatibility issues etc. I am also a good source of all that is Saturn. Carts, mods, link/S-vid/RGB/composite/controller extension cables, VCD cards etc etc. Can't find it? Just ask, I might have just what you are looking for!

Speaking of Saturns, I am looking to buy any/all Saturn consoles. All I need is the console itself and the AC cord. If you have the original box/docs and AV cord thats a nice bonus, but the other 2 items are required. Have one collecting dust? Let me know!

I'd like to close by saying: don't be afraid to email! ALL emails will be responded to, if you have any questions, wanna propose a trade etc just drop me a line. Include the link to your GTZ page and we'll see if we can work something out! Game on! =)
