Capcom's Haunting Ground was an interesting attempt at a non-violent game, where the player has to outrun, outwit, or hide from the opposition. Of course, it does get nasty if you are caught. The other girl-with-a-dog game on the PS2, Rule of Rose, is far more violent but also has the more emotionally powerful story.

I don't think Deus Ex has any happy endings. There were four that were easily reached just based on my actions late in Cairo and beyond. The game mechanics were nice though, with definite similarities to Thief I and II. I tried to play as if it were from that series, avoiding biomods and sniping from the shadows when possible. The lead character is required to take at least one biomod, so my first choice was level 1 move silently, which closely mimics Garrett's natural talents. I later added level 1 thermal masking, which is extremely useful for avoiding bots and security cameras, and level 1 bot domination, which was slightly disappointing. Scrambler grenades are far more entertaining if you can find them, turning even military robots into your best friend for about a minute at a time.

July 15th:
The label "Recently Defeated" no longer made sense, so I'm going for a longer time frame.

July 7th:
Syberia has a poor sense of control and ergonomics. Kate Walker, the lead character, is also unable or unwilling to run once she is pointed in the right direction. If I could use a mouse, I imagine this would go much better, but this is simply not an option on a console.

June 6th:
I rented the second Suffering title to see how the story ends. The disc was scratched in a way that allows me to play it but not look at any of the archive pages, which is strange and disappointing. The level design was also a let-down. Despite this, I appreciate that the writers were trying to give Torque a history and inner life that you don't see often in action titles. I can also appreciate that it wasn't easy to tie all three endings from the first game into a continuous narrative. There are changes in dialogue for the first half of the Ties that relate to your actions in the first game, but the second half of Ties depends on your moral choices while in Baltimore.

May 18th:
I like that the three endings of The Suffering depend only on your style of play, not any hidden items or a requirement that you reach one ending to unlock another.

May 4th:
One of the most frustrating parts of The Suffering must be escorting Clem to his raft. He only carries molotov cocktails, he charges directly at the monsters, and he tends to set himself on fire, unless he gets flattened first.

Apr 23rd:
FF9 is finally beaten. Kuja has been destroyed in an unexpectedly mild variation of the usual three-stage final boss encounters. After the first stage, you can still return to a save point, change members, teleport out, etc. After the second stage, your characters are fixed, but you can change equipment and skill allocations. You might die a few times, but it simply isn't the marathon event that Final Fantasy 7 and 8 forces the gamer to endure.

Apr. 16th:
Still Fantasy-ing for a Final 9th time, and probably about to enter the underworld/alternate world of Terra. Gameznflix finally fixed their website so that it works with Firefox, which is a nice touch, and it almost balances out the annoyance of a scratched-up copy of God of War they sent.

Apr. 10th:
I'm enjoying Final Fantasy IX, but maybe I should avoid the long RPGs when I want to clear out my older, unplayed games...

Mar 20th:
Spartan is a decent game, but I would categorize it as more of a rental than a purchase. It has a similar premise to God of War, with a hero who is less interesting but also less in need of therapy, and it adds large-scale battles with 50+ characters on the screen at once. There are several unlockable weapons, but little opportunity to switch between them.

Mar 13th:
I wouldn't call the last two battles in Serious Sam easy, even if you set the game to that level. I'll grant that I was able to get through both in a single day, and without killing a keyboard or mouse, but they weren't easy. In the large, open plain outside of the church housing the grail, you have to run far from the power-ups if you want to live. Within the walls of the churchyard, you have to run in a circle and intentionally not kill with weaker monsters, because larger replacements are waiting.

Mar 10th:
My lowered expectations are helping with Serious Sam. The levels might still take close to an hour each if you're hunting for secret rooms and power ups, but you just don't die that often on *shudder* easy. It's not the sort of game I would play with hopes of story and challenge, anyway.

Mar 5th:
I finally conquered Xenosaga. Thinking that the game might go on past another confrontation with Albedo, I neglected to pick up the last of the robot parts or deliver the flower seeds to the mute girl on the space station. I want to go back, because I'm greedy that way, but I have many other things to get through. The resolution wins this battle.

Feb 26th:
After the first time I faced Albedo and his giant Mech in the base of the Song of Nephilim, I spent most of my stake on upgradings the three AGWS piloted by Shion, Jr., and chaos. Not well spent. The new frame armor is nice, as is the frame HP recovery accessory, but the new weapons... The giant federation military war hammers do nothing. The best approach, with my resources, was to support chaos as he struck with chain blast and other tech attacks.

Feb 24th:
I'm about thirty hours into Xenosaga, just boarding the Song of Nephilim, and I might finally have to upgrade the character's armor. The accessories are fun to play with, but the only armor change I've made is putting Shion in the swimsuit for a technique point bonus. I'm rather confident that Jr. is voiced by the same actor who handled Jim Hawking on Outlaw Star, but the credits for the show just lump all the English voice actors together... Wikipedia agrees and says it's Brianne Siddall.

Feb 9th:
I clearly have a tendency to only play games long after the release, the end of regular sales, even the end of customer support. The Xenosaga trilogy is finished, but I'm only starting it now. The game is unexpectedly pretty, such as when the fleet of Gnosis vessels first enter, and the cut scenes do one really brilliant thing. You can pause them. Just hit start; the scene pauses. Being able to rewind if you miss some of the dialogue would also be nice, but when I have to run to the bathroom during what turns out to be eight minutes of story, pausing is just right. I think I recognize some of the voice actors. Not by name, but a doctor has the same voice as Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop, and others ring a bell, maybe from Berserk, maybe from DNAngel, almost certainly from Tales of Symphonia.

Feb 4th:
I had started playing DMC3 on Normal before I decided on the new year's strategy, and it seemed a shame to start over on Easy, so I spent a couple extra afternoons to finish as is... This is already starting to sound like every other resolution I've broken. Which step am I on again? Maybe I'm losing something by not playing Devil May Cry in order, but I don't really get the appeal. This hyper-kinetic pretty boy can dance around monsters in the cut scenes but he turns into a klutz the instant the player takes over. I kind of liked the dark tower, but a setting doesn't make the game.

Feb 1st:
I have been gone a very very long time, by and large because of the huge backlog of games that already eat up a ton of my time and may have cost me a couple of promotions and job opportunities. This hobby has become a "habit" in the possibly negative sense. Well, I do have perhaps thirty untouched games in various formats needing my attention. There might be another ten that I would like to replay either with different character types or on a different difficulty level.

For the sake of thinning out this list, one of my New Year's resolutions, I have made a decision that has until now always been contrary to my interests with this hobby. I love being able to say I've beaten a game on Hard or Legendary (especially Halo). I'm willing to put in many hours for this purpose, but I play for the story, not bragging rights. To get through all these stories, some good, some less than, I will have to settle for playing on Easy for most of the year, maybe all year. In many cases, this also means foregoing the alternate endings.

Laugh. Get it out of your system.

This odd compromise, made to follow through on a resolution, makes me feel a little embarrassed, but the shame of not being able to manage my time is far worse. The upside, and there is an upside, is that I will be able to offer many trades in the near future.

Another compromise I'll have to make is not getting a 360 yet, because those achievements are all about bragging rights.

Jan 25th: There's an extra video hidden in Siren about the origin of the curse over Hanuda village, but I can't unlock it. I have found more than ninety of the one-hundred collectibles, beaten all first and second objectives, and reached both endings, which were both unexpectedly positive. Grrr.
