I got the Sennheiser x Massdrop 6XX headphones finally. I don't normally listen to music in public so I'm not worried about them being open backed. I wanted a portable audio player that can drive these as my iPod does not cut it. I can get a pretty good deal on a Astell & Kern AK70 ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&lo...) and the guy said he'll even throw in a Dragonfly Red( https://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&lo... ) if I want it for a little more.

My question is should I go with the AK70, or would my money be better spent on something else? Keep in mind that I would be getting the AK70 at a significant discount (according to Amazon prices anyway).

An iPod can't drive $200 headphones? I thought iPods had pretty good sound quality.

Nope. I literally have to turn them all the way up just to hear anything and the quality is bad. My m50x has the same problem but not to the extent of the 6XX. I can get the two listed items for around $300 compared to the $700 if I got them from Amazon.

@DefaultGen Sennheiser HD6xx have massive impedance. You wouldn't be able to drive them very well without amplification.

@Uppercat Have you looked into FIIO stuff at all? I'm not a super audiophile, but I have an X1 and know a lot of people swear by the X3 or X5.

Scratch that, take the $300 deal. That's a really good price if I'm not mistaken.

Or you could research just getting a portable amp (FIIO makes those too) if you like your iPod but need an amp.
