Apparently Amazon has made using two-step authentication mandatory with all seller accounts. This is fine, except for the fact that you are required to have two phone numbers, or one phone number and an app. Anyone else having this issue? After 30 min on the phone with support, they were able to tell me that this was the case. Either I have to buy a second phone, or I have to download an app onto my phone. So this means I can't sell on Amazon anymore. Why does two step authentication take three steps?

You can't download an app to your flip phone?

Lmao, if you don't want to download the app, a Trac phone is like 10 bucks.

I hate when sites try to be safe by protecting our identities.

I've noticed several sites I visit now ask for the e-mail and password on separate pages. Instead of entering your e-mail, hitting TAB, and entering your password, you have to enter your e-mail, click on NEXT, wait for the next page to open, and enter your password.

Also, most reCAPTCHA challengers seem to be at least two puzzles now.

I guess these are to increase security, but they are annoying.

I am an Amazon Seller. I have not been required to go to 2-factor. Maybe you have to reach a certain level or something. I just sell a few things here and there. Maybe 5-10 items per year.

They said it was mandatory starting Nov. 1 but this is the first I have been told to do it.

It seems that I can download the app, create this three step auth and then turn it off. I might do that.

It's actually decent, it means a seller will need at least one burner phone to activate and throw out before they can sell I'm Sure It's Legitimate New Seller NES Classic for $60 Shipped, Ships in 1-2 Days.

I know a lot of people in the forums have just registered for one of those Google phone #s for their secondary. I ended up using my husbands' cell phone for my secondary number.

Two factor authentication is always always always a good idea. If a site offers it, use it. Security and convenience are frequently at odds, but 2FA is good bang for your buck security wise.

I am fine with two factor authentication - I use it with Steam. But this isn't that. They are asking for a third factor. Password and one phone should be all they need.

Again, it's another layer to keep fraudulent seller accounts from popping up for free all the time. You need 1. a phone number and 2. a phone that can use that phone number and load up an app. If it was just a phone number or just an app it'd be much easier to spoof.

So what's the third layer if you just need a phone that accesses the number and the app?

Your password is the first layer.

Password, Phone Number (to receive texts/voice calls), App.

Seems normal? Especially if the number you use is a cell and it has the app on it.

But you aren't selling stuff to others on those sites.

Amazon isn't having you do this for normal Amazon buying, right? Just for selling. So, it isn't the same as Steam or Google at all. Those are just worried about protecting YOU. Amazon has to worry about protecting OTHERS from you when you're a seller.

That being said, you could argue that EBay doesn't do it -- but that doesn't work as well because EBay lately is overrun with scammers. I've just had an order cancelled in the past week where it was a scam seller -- and my co-worker had one two weeks ago and still doesn't have his money back yet. So, EBay really DOES need better security -- like what Amazon is starting to do for their sellers.
