Thank you @John and @DarkFact for giving advice about my phone earlier. I did upgrade to a Pixel 3a XL by transferring the sim card and made sure it's able to call and send/receive texts. Unfortunately that was not the end of it. Verizon is now asking me to "verify" the device which apparently involves downloading their cloud app and backing up my contacts/photos. This is not only very absurd but also very bad because I fail to see what this would accomplish. (this would unlock the next step of activation how/when?) It just sounds like Verizon going out of their way to complicate crap by throwing their dysfunctional app before our feet. I'd be shocked if the app even works.

I'm guessing I need my previous phone to do this, which is doubly inconvenient as I've already removed the phone and the charger. The phone is barely able to charge and was at 0% when I removed my sim card from it. But whatever. Let's do this, I guess.

Like I said my phone has service so maybe this is just a ploy of theirs. I wonder what happens if I don't do anything. Maybe it will go away on its own.

On our list of devices by phone is not pictured, it's a placeholder image. Sounds bad right? But when I go to activate it asks if I want to activate Google Pixel 3a XL in purple-ish. So it's like.. hey... psst... you technically already know what phone I have.

EDIT: The problem seems to have been solved! Thankfully the xfer wasn't necessary.
Was about to make a new post, but I decided not to derail the thread any further than I already have..

Why do people contact me on facebook at 1 AM to ask about an item I'm selling, then proceed to ghost me after I tell them it's available?

Dammit, I need the money. And I sure as hell will take half my asking price just so I don't have to ship it.

I really don't understand this.

"Is it still available?"

'yes'

*Silence*

Why would someone waste someone's time like that?

Just had something like this happen to a friend of mine. A wasting of their time.

He had a shirt on eBay. He took it down. Someone on eBay sends him a message saying he/she is interested in the shirt, asking if it could be relisted. So my friend relists it. Then the other person starts negotiating. And then proceeds to ghost.

There should be some sort of punishment for ghosting. It doesn't have to be something drastic. Maybe a moderate electric shock.

90% of messaging on FB Marketplace is BS. I don't understand if they're attempting to scam, or idiots just being trolls. It seems so common that no matter what's listed, the dummies come out of the woodworks. You know immediately if it's bogus by their lack of picture/profile. I've learned to just block these as they come in.

It is because FB makes it so easy to hit one button that says "Is this still available?" They do it to basically "save" things that they are interested in. Or they do it on 10 items and maybe reply to one that answers.

But it is FB's fault. And they do not care. At all.

The guy seems to be a reseller. And I LOVE resellers because they like to make deals for other things I don't need (I still got a ton of stuff left over that I never listed in my last auction because it wasn't worth shipping it out.)

I looked at his FB listings and he has several DVDs with games for my site project that I would like to get from him - including local Region 4 stuff - and I want him to reply so I can offer him a bunch of big name movies for some of his discs. But nothing.

I'm giving him a few hours, then I'm pinging him again to see what's up.

In my CL ads, I always include the statement: "If the ad is up, I still have it. I'll let you know if someone has inquired before you. Lowball offers and messages that simply ask "do you still have it?" will be ignored". Honestly, my response depends on how many responses I get.

I 've considered making these statements in FM ads, but haven't yet. Getting FM's "Is this still available?" inquiries is annoying. It makes it hard to respond to the second and third inquiries since you don't know how long to wait for a response to your "Yes, I still have it".

Sometimes, I ask that if they are truly interested in the item, instead of just clicking they have to enter a phrase or 'password' to show they are a real person...

This. There have been a few times I've hit "Is this still available" by mistake. And I get someone responding "yes it is" and I'm lost. I usually reply with "sorry, hit the button by mistake."

But it seems easy to mistakenly push that button.

What are you trying to do?

Friend of mine just had an issue with transferring contacts from an old phone to a new one. Big headache. What should have been a simple Bluetooth transfer (old phone, no cloud or backup options) ended up just being a waste of time wry smile.

I want to transfer my messages, phone call history, contacts, app data, and my photos. I was told to use the Google One app to create a backup of everything and have it uploaded to the cloud. Spent one whole day doing that. So today I factory reset the new phone so it would let me log in to my google account to do the restore. It just said "nope" and bombed out.

Sorry to hear it's not working as planned. Around two weeks ago a family member went to a phone store to have them transfer info from one phone to the other. After getting back home, the phone is mysteriously locked, and the password wouldn't work. So weird.

Tech can be so user unfriendly sometimes.

I have a New 3DS XL I have almost no use for, but it's hard for me to let go of it bc I like how it smells. It's like leather or something.

Anyone ever feel this? I have a slim Vita that smells like hand sanitizer or deoderant. and that literally ruined it for me. (I tried to get as much of the smell out as possible but the left speaker smells of it, so what's left of it is coming from inside the system.)

This is weird -- because both Apple and Android phones now SYNC contacts through the cloud. You don't have to "transfer" them at all. In fact, even if you do use a transfer cable to do an Android-to-Android transfer, it won't transfer contacts -- because it just immediately pulls them from your Google cloud account.

I mean, unless they don't use accounts at all (which is impossible for Apple and nearly impossible for Android unless you side-load everything).

It's hard to NOT transfer contacts to a new device these days. It just happens automatically when you log in.

Weird.

Same with Android although you normally use a cable as the first choice. It transfers most things very well.

The problem with Android transfers is that each app has to be designed to transfer settings properly and most do not. So it is just a pain to have to log into everything again and such. That's my biggest peeve about Android device changes -- having to log into every freakin' app again.

In general, the best way to do this with Android is with the phones cabled together. Usually, when you factory reset the new phone, it comes up and asks if you want to transfer from an old phone and then walks you through it.

That being said, Google One should work too. Not sure why it didn't work for you...

I don't think all old phones automatically synced contacts, if he was running old into new he might run into an issue. I just ran into an issue where my choice was to not use my phone for two weeks while Apple decides if it's gonna give me a password reset (thanks for asking for 3 points of ID proof and then doing that, cool system) so I ended up just making a new iTunes account and had to manually re-enter my contacts from my android device. Somehow I managed to miss my boss, BUT THAT'S ALL NEITHER HERE NOR THERE. I know some people are being forced to upgrade due to the new VoLTE requirements as they phase out 3G/Non-VoIP 4G services so it's likely the phone was too clunky to actually do contact syncs

Yeah syncing from an older Android phone to a newer one can be hit or miss. Also, maybe it's changed on newer Android phones, but every Android phone I've had gives you the option to add contacts just to the phone locally, or to your Google account. So if you're just adding them to your phone, then they're not going to sync over automatically when you add your Google account to a new phone.

Don't assume a flip phone is a dumb phone. I have a ZTE Cymbal Z353VL. I don't know which version of Android it is running, but it surprises a lot of people when I access apps and the internet from it. Interestingly, I use it as a TracFone, and they allow it on a cheaper, non-smart phone plan.

I don't know about later versions, but the major drawback of this model is the lack of internal RAM. Even after wiping and restoring, there is little memory left after the OS and apps that come with the phone and can't be removed. I installed a SIMM card and moved the few apps I installed to it, but whenever apps update they get reinstalled in the phone memory and I have to move them again. The screen is too small for some apps, but I don't watch videos on it.

For some reason the contacts and apps started to move to the new phone overnight - it was forcefully installing all my apps and that's how I found out - but the call and text history never did. So now I get to try again with a USB cable.

I upgraded the onboard SD card storage from 16 GB to 64 GB too. I don't really use it much, but I'd rather have the extra space in case I have to record some video or something.

For calls/texts, use a 3rd party app. If on Android, SMS backup is fantastic. I use this every time when I change phones or just want to format and start clean. The built-in Android/Samsung stuff is good, but limiting, and slow. Use a 3rd party to backup to Google and restore on new phone.

I'm too old for amusement parks. Went to a local carnival. Kids wanted to ride rides, but only if I went with them. There were 3 rides that didn't have a weight limit. All of them spin. 6 Rides later they finally went on one without me. Didn't get sick, but 2 of the rides had me crammed in (knees jammed into "safety" bars) and I walked away reagrevating a pulled muscle in my neck. The third ride were the swings that spin. I had to keep adjusting my feet not to hit the ground or railings. The things you do for your kids.

I'm pushing 50 and live close to Cedar Point. There is a BIG difference between 18 year old me and 48 year old me in terms of the way you take in information. It's weird: I used to feel like my vision and peripheral vision were one 'screen' and I could use it all simultaneously. Now my vision, has my slower brain darting around from thing to thing and I can almost feel the milliseconds like they last forever compared to my younger mind. It feels like I can't take in information as effectively and I hate it.

The physical pains afterward are just insult to injury.

But even worse: I bowled two games at my niece's birthday party in March and a muscle in my knee hurt for like 2 weeks afterwards.

I hurt myself bowling. LOL

Amusement park rides, movie theater seating, airplane seating, etc. all are built around the idea of accommodating an "average" person- which apparently includes women and children. When asked my height, I sometimes reply "6 foot nothing". I don't believe I am outside of the "average plus or minus one standard deviation" group, but I'm often physically uncomfortable in public seating situations. I once rented an economy car and had to ask for a different model because I couldn't hold my head upright without hitting the ceiling. I often find myself wondering how guys who are taller than me deal with flying, etc.

Chickens are one of the ultimate scavengers. Initially, saw them pick apart a baby robin that fell out of the nest. They fought over it. Then a cat killed a mouse and brought it to the kittens. The chicken stole it and they devoured it. They come over and steal the cat food all with their chicken feed being full. They have 2 acres to feast on insects. Fascinating to watch them. When they run I can picture dinosaurs running.

Oh yeah? Where abouts? We head up to Sandusky/Port Clinton quite a bit over the summer. Even though I'm too gdamn big for most rides, I get to play old man grandpa and watch my little kids go on rides now.

Same here. We bought a season pass last year at Halloweekend time (because you got to use it last year too). We were planning to go a couple weeks ago before I got Covid. Now planning another trip as soon as we can -- and then probably one last one at Halloweekends again. yes

It's about a 4 hour drive for us...

I'm not sure it's possible to explain the concept further haha. I enjoy the taste of albitta BBQ sauce mixed in with the ol' pilaf.

Random Thought - why do more and more gas stations no longer have a squeegee and cleaner for cleaning your windshield? Legit needed this today, nope, jerks.

Sounds pretty good actually. Like a smoky tangy rice. Will give it a try.

Just got word that we have to put our oldest kitty down on Saturday. 17 years of a lovely, majestic lady (though I've only known her for 10). I guess with so many things going right for us lately, the universe had to kick us in the pants.

@theJaw I'm sorry for your loss frown I still haven't gotten over the loss of our cats several years back. Cats are excellent companions.

Sorry to hear about your cat @theJaw

Makes me think of the turtle I once had as a kid. I wonder if there's an animal heaven.

I wish there was a website (not ebay) that sold random parts to things, like just lids to storage bins, or just one shoe. My 6 month old dog just chewed on one of my wife's sneakers and messed it up good.. She only got the right shoe, and the left one is fine. The sneakers are almost brand new and would hate to but a new pair just for that.. Wish I could just buy a new left shoe :)
