Hey @bill,

Furthering our previous dialogue about "being in the know" when something important/limited is occurring, any thought on having the ability to subscribe to a board that sends notifications immediately via mobile app, email or text? My initial thought was allow for this on all of hot_deals, but that can get some garbage from time to time. Perhaps a new board all about "Important Notifications, Limited Deals, Super Hot Items", etc.?

I realize other sites do some of this (like nowinstock), but the community here is pretty good about notifying others of this type of stuff that far too often, others miss out on as they don't get instant notification.

Personally, I'd take a subscription to any new post in hot_deals myself.

Food for thought.

I don't know. This seems like it would be a firehose of emails/notifications and not something most people would appreciate. Shouldn't people just check the forum if they want to see what's new?

If you could make it user configurable, that's on them to manage.

Quite often someone posts about a limited time availability and people miss it ... because well, life (work, kids, wife, whatever). I know I've missed many items that fellow GTZ'ers have posted. I can't check the forums that frequently and I doubt many others could.

Hell, I just posted about a limited run game this morning and it was gone within 20 minutes. If you have the option to subscribe to a board for new posts, than you'd be in the know.

Perhaps make it a mobile only thing? Another reason to help push mobile app functionality?

I recently missed a post Pope made for a $200 iPhone SE. One of those "It costs X much but you can have it for Y much" if you send an offer tonight type posts. The deal was so good I almost shed a tear.

I understand wanting to know about stuff like that. But, this idea doesn't seem like it would quite work out like that. First, only 1 person is going to get a great deal like that, no matter what feature I add. So, in the end and in the abstract, the result isn't much different. If you get this feature, so would lots of other people and thus you'd still likely get beaten to the punch.

Then, back to the firehose. This feature would likely notify you for a lot of stuff that isn't some great limited-time deal or for stuff you're not interested in. Thus, the phone notifications and/or emails would pile up and get ignored over time.

What you want is something magical that notifies just for things you really want and can afford and immediately. It also knows not to bother you if you're doing something really important with your family that is more important or whatever, etc. Anything short of that isn't going to be so great, I think.

Per @SirConnery 's scenario, sure, but general vendor stock, not at all.

Agreed, which is why my thought was to make it optional. Totally up to you if you want the notification of when something is posted. Maybe I'm the minority, but I don't mind the notifications (I work off my phone quite a bit, so it's always in use) and I think the pay off is worth it.

I was half kidding. But what I'd like to see is a button I hit on the mobile site and see all marketplace posts on a single page. I'm not sure if this is that, but between that and notifications the app is wonderful.

Protip: Send a private message to yourself. Then set it to keep as new. It comes up as a push notification on any device with the app.

I keep my iPhone and iPad in another room of my house. I only have a kindle paperwhite by my bed. If I think of something in the middle of the night I go to the site from the Kindle, pm myself, set to keep new. When I wake up and open my phone or tablet, I have reminders waiting with my other messages. smiley:::grin
