Thought I'd start up a dedicated thread for those interested in limited release games. Limited Run Games made a big announcement today -- they're approved to release Switch games starting in 2018!

I see some mixed emotions with these limited releases -- it seems most people like them and their mission of preserving games physically...until they're unable to snag a game they've been waiting for (Night Trap from LRG is the biggest recent example). What are everyone's thoughts? Is there a way to please everyone or are companies like LRG doomed to piss off a lot of people?

It's better than nothing. The limited hype aspect probably makes games sell better than they would otherwise. Half their games are yesteryear budget indie games that you can get nearly free in Humble Bundles or Steam Sales. Mutant Mudds certainly wouldn't have sold 12,000 physical copies if they just put it out there and said "Hey you can pay $30 for this game now if you want, I guess".

When they put out games that aren't available, an order of magnitude cheaper, or better on PC, I'm onboard. I'm hoping for lots of Switch exclusives.

Agreed completely. Personally I only order the games I want to open and play -- I feel sorry for the guys who feel compelled to buy every single release because they have a complete collection going. And then keep them all on their shelf, sealed. That's really the only reason LRG can keep pumping out lower quality indie titles and sell out instantly -- which is unfortunate, because it lowers their standards. But then they release higher quality, in-demand games like Night Trap and Wonderboy and get a ton of backlash from those who couldn't snag a copy. Tough situation they're in, but their business model as a whole is definitely profitable.

Let's hope the Switch games are all on the higher quality end of the spectrum. Golf Story would be glorious.

LRG's biggest problem is lack of business acumen. They are trying to learn as they go and certainly have made some improvements but mostly they need someone with some business sense to at least advise them if not direct them outright. There is no reason to recreate the wheel here, especially how fast they have grown and potential they have. No excuse for the self created problems, limited (ha) mindset and decision making woes.

Aside from foundational issues being a root problem, I appreciate the service they provide. Vita is my interest and I've purchased more than half their releases in the past. I don't think they are all bad but I do fear for the end result moving forward. My personal thoughts are that the Switch games will be $10 higher than Vita or PS4, probably $40 but it could come in at $35 if they think it more lines up with Vita pricing.

Hopefully they do focus on exclusives, that'd certainly be the way to go in my opinion. I'd also like to see some other games that "could" come to the Switch in the future, like Ghost Blade HD or Undertale. It doesn't have to be a AAA title, just a quality game that's worth the cost. Not looking for more of the same with just tossing up physical copies of any old free to play game out there simply because they can. We'll see though, I'm glad they got the go ahead but I'm hoping decision and implementation changes are also coming along with that moving forward.

If I could only pick one title it would be Fatal Frame for WiiU or Switch.

I think all games should be made to demand. Have a 1 week order period.

Anyone follow Special Reserve Games? A couple updates worth noting:

- Absolver Limited Run variant cover went live (and sold out) this morning - anyone snag one?
- They won't be producing a Ruiner PS4 version because the ESRB wants a ton of money to rate the game (now a requirement for all physical games as of August). I guess their fee is based on each game's budget. Brutal!

I didn't want to go anywhere near Absolver, since (correct me if I'm wrong) it's an online game, and NOT part of the LRG main series...kind of like Lawbreakers is online.

But now Absolver is selling for alot because of the variant. Oh well, not in it for profit necessarily.

Yeah I was hesitant too because of that, but gave in and bought it at the last second. I think it does have a single player mode, but it's not very robust. Will probably give it a go when it arrives and sell ASAP if it doesn't resonate (as I'm sure the value will go down over time).

It has an offline mode. And IIRC, its cheaper than the one from SRG.

I appreciate, and at the same time, hate Limited Run Games. On one hand, I'm fudging tired of seeing "Limited Edition" stuff being put out by big companies that don't actually limit them, yet include a fudging numbered certificate of authenticity as if it truly is limited. On theother hand, I don't think LRG puts out enough games in quantities that are feasible for anyone to get ahold of other than craphead resellers who immediately flip it with an insanely inflated price.

Honestly, I don't want to undermine the "limited" aspect of anything, but it would be nice if they had certain runs with a made-to-order preorder cap (say essentially, we'll only make as many as are pre-ordered to a maximum of 50,000 etc.) with 1 per person order limits. Obviously let the makers of the game limit it further as wanted by them like if someone only wanted 5000 made or whatever. Something other than just every game only having a few thousand, released at a certain time and letting the sharks run rampant on it.

I don't own a single LRG release because I'm not available at any of the times they sell them, don't care for the Black Friday mentality of waiting for the moment it releases and praying my connection is good enough to snag one, and none of the games are important enough to me to cop out $100+ for a copy when I can just get the digital one for a fraction.

Anyone pick up La Mulana and Nex Machina this morning? Mulana went super quick, but it seems the collector's editions aren't quite as popular -- at $65 I think they're overpriced for what you get.

Grabbed just the standard versions myself -- super pumped to play Nex!

I was a sucker for the CE's again. LRG had posted a while ago that La Mulana Ex CE is the nicest one they have put out yet. I liked that they came with soundtracks and some nice art. I agree though, at $65 they are probably overpriced but I didn't want to miss out!

I have no Vita and no interest in LRG's overpriced CEs anymore. I was on the fence with Nex Machina, but it seems like a game that will be in a humble bundle and a game that would really benefit from high refresh rate. Saving my money for future releases, especially the inevitable deluge of LRG Switch games I'm going to buy.

I grabbed both Nex Machina and La Mulana, mostly because they both get really good reviews and include nice single player games.

I think I'm going to be much pickier about what LRG games I spring for. I'll do more research on them and make a decision vs. simply buying EVERY single one.

I've said it many times before, and I'll say it again. I think limited time makes more sense than limited quantity. Make it available for one day and then never again (with the possible exception of a small brick and mortar stock on release date).

You are probably right yes I guess they get around this by making it available at two different times, 8 hours apart. "Most" people can get online one of these times...but yeah, it's not fair for everyone.

But then again, we're talking about being able to purchase video games as not being fair smiley:::raspberry

Anyone grab the releases this morning? Crawl didn't interest me but I grabbed 2064. But man, three variant covers? LRG's getting greedy...but people keep buying them, so can you blame them?

I was going to grab 2064 but the gameplay footage i saw online didn't really do much for me. Those covers look dope, though.

Has anyone here played it?

Haven't played it myself but I hear great things. And it's based in the same world as VA-11 HALL-A, another popular one being released soon. VA-11 HALL-A looks even stranger...a bartender sim? Haha.

LRG is doing a Vita release of VA-11 HALL-A, right? I don't buy many of these releases, but i'll be grabbing that one for sure.

I think so -- they've hinted that the Vita version has been delayed (ESRB or waiting for a patch maybe?). When VA-11 HALL-A is finally released it will go super quick, especially the Vita version.

No, same thing happened last week. 2064 has a print run of 6000+ so no surprise there. I picked up both the games today though, they look pretty solid.

Some retro action platformer for $30 on Black Friday. Selling an $8 game for $30 doesn't feel like a Black Friday deal, but there it is. The game looks OK.

Yeah, it looks sort of Shovel Knight-ish. Only 2000 copies too.

They're also releasing a few leftover copies of recent games throughout the day, but only 30-40 of each. They'll go quick, especially Night Trap.

This is pretty much what LRG is, right? <$10 downloadable games for $30+ because they are harder to get?

Sometimes they have more expensive (digital price) games. Sometimes they're only $25. Charging $30 for a game that sells for $8 is silly. They're probably using the ESRB as an excuse.

Colourshaper
Double Gold Good Trader Global Trader - willing to trade internationally Canada

They generally have said prices are $15 above retail or $24.99, whichever is higher. But I think with the new ESRB requirements they've had to up the prices by $5.
