With PS3 games the visuals won't be a huge downgrade because PSNow maxes at 720p, so if a PS3 game nativally only hit 720p then you wouldn't be able to tell. The main issue would be PS4 games and if you got a 4k set and now all of a sudden are locked into lower resolutions.
50mb connection is still far more than you need with Game Pass, you can get away with >20 easy.
Gold isn't required for Game Pass but I can't say for certain if the 14 day free trial is.
