That's great but what are we doing this month? It's not that hard, we already have 3 great nominations anybody wanna add a 4th?
So far we have:

1. Fire Emblem 1 (Famicom, Switch)

2. The Nightmare Before Christmas:
Oogie's Revenge (Xbox, PS2)

3. The Legend Of Zelda: Spirit Tracks
(Nintendo DS, Wii U)

I can do it this month, we can just vote in posts here on the 5th and 6th
and I'll give people time to nominate 1 game each (up to 7 total) and it'll be on starting next Monday I guess.

happy to see this hoping its going to lead to the other games never before released here to get done as well, but they really all already have great translation patches. If these are taking any resources away from IS to make FE17 id assume they focus on that.

Lets vote for game of the month!
Y'all know the drill, there's only 3
games this month so rank each
game 1-10. The game with the most points by tomorrow night is the game of the month for December

1. Fire Emblem

2. The Nightmare Before Christmas
Oogies Revenge

3. TLOZ Spirit Tracks - 19

Only 3 of us have voted though

I'll give it till midnight here on the West Coast. So about 7 more hours to vote y'all. I'm hoping for a tie so I can play Zelda and everyone else can play FE who can access it. Or Zelda.

Just beat the second temple in Spirit Tracks. So far, I'm enjoying this one even more than Phantom Hourglass. The music is much better, and while the boat had more flexibility in movement, I much prefer land travel over water travel, due to the ocean being so boring to look at.

Looks like my FE special edition came in, and I have to say it's gorgeous! The artbook (the real reason I wanted it) is nice and meaty, and the other pack-ins really harkened back to the NES days and reminded me of them, down to little detail in the manual. And the mock cart... I expected a standard grey plastic shell, but this is a nice heavy plastic display cart- something I actually would show! Topping off the whole package was the mini NP insert, with the inside reminding me of the issues of the 90s... man, it makes me feel so old and nostalgic...

The Multiformat is best for PS2-era games because it supports 480p passthrough. If you're going to focus on stuff that's older than that, you should probably get the Pro.

About the only game system I own that's not HDMI is the PS2. Like I have FPGa systems for Genesis etc. . . So my worst looking games are PS2. Is retrotink pro + PS2 component a huge improvement?

For capturing/streaming, component is going to be a pretty big improvement over composite, no matter which device you get. On an old style TV, the difference will probably be less dramatic, unless the set is pretty high-end.

I say we nominate a new game for next month. Nine days left in the month, which is plenty of time to beat ST for the people who actually plan to do it. I played up to where you go into the Spirit Tower for the first time. I don't know if I'll get back to it by the end of the month or not. I beat it within a week the first time I played it.

Happy New Year RTT! 2020 was kinda crap eh? Just a little bit.

Though it was probably a good year for game playing. For me, it was the opposite actually. Kids staying home meant I have near zero free/alone time. And in the second half of the year, we spent all of our free time looking for a new place to move to. Now that things are wrapping up, we have finally moved(though still settling in), I'm hoping 2021 will be a new start, and for everyone as well.

Yeah well I don't have kids but I have a bunny and she has chewed many of many charging cables in half. So I may need more time to finish
Spirit Tracks BUT IMMA DO IT.
She's already gone through 2 DS charging cables and I'm sure I have more but looking through everything is a total slog.

Also Happy New Year RTT because
It's gotta be better this coming year!

I am looking forward to new systems this year and retro games. I did beat some games most out of order or not gotm but it's been a weird year and I just kinda stopped caring as much I maybe should have.

Happy New Year, everyone. While this year was a challenge in nearly every aspect, it was a good year personally for retro gaming. I picked up a number of fun new toys, improved my gaming and capture setup, and played through a number of my all-time favorites that I hadn't played in decades. It was fun ride and an effective way to distract myself from the rest of the world as it collapsed into a pile of overcooked couscous.

On that note, here's the final tally for the January 2021 Game of the Month:

1. Jackal - 15 points
2. Ghouls 'n Ghosts - 12 points
3. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - 11 points
4. Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble - 10 points
5. Beauty and the Beast: Belle's Chainsaw Massacre - 5 points

Being based on an arcade original, Jackal is a fairly short game. Even before you consider the number of the arcade version was ported via emulation, Jackal has been released on a number of platforms, despite being best known for its NES port. Should you decide to explore some of these less-travelled ports, you shall be handsomely rewarded.

Play through Jackal on one platform before February 1 to earn the Jackal Squad badge.
image

If you decide to play through a second time on a different platform, you'll also earn the Medium Tank badge.
image

For each platform you play through beyond the second (third, fourth, etc.), you'll earn a Heavy Tank badge.
image

Screenshots/Photos aren't required for verification, but I think they're fun, so feel free to post them.

I won't have time to make icons, I can update here and there. If someone has the time or is willing to spend a bit of time to make them and upload to imgur, I can easily incorporate it.

This thread is 4 years old, so I don't think it's prudent to make a new one, if anything, GotM is just one component of RTT(even though the level of discussion has been declining in recent months).

Anyone is free to make their own GotM threads, I believe at one time(besides RTT), there were multiple GotM threads going on at the same time.

Top 25? I really gotta pay more attention. You got any speed run vids or anything? I'd like to check them out after I play through a couple of times.

I enjoyed the Ninja Gaiden run throughs I just was terrible on all but the last stage. I could whip through to that last boss fast. Actually now that I got a nes classic imma play that a little bit after jackal.

any one here have experience with repair/replace? It's not a huge job but I want to pay someone who's smarter than me. I want to replace my battery in the micro because the red lights flash a lot even right after removal from the charge cable.

It even flashes some times when it's still plugged up, so maybe it's some sort of weird short with the battery level checker, if there is such a thing. Right now I can play when I have it plugged up but I'd love to see what I can do to fix this flashing red light problem. Probably should try to play it for a few hours unplugged first I guess.

I found a lead on a Sony PVM-20L5 and ended up driving two hours north (and back) this morning to pick it up. When I got home, I christened it with my Jackal playthrough.

image

I took a picture with my phone too to show off the setup, but I finished the game right as the afternoon sun glare kicked in, so you don't actually see much. Oh well.

This evening, I also booted up the arcade version, but it's one continuous level that you can't quarter-spam, so I don't think I'll progress very far in it, especially since the grenade/missile control is much less forgiving than the NES version. I booted up the MiSTer too to see if I could get the ZX Spectrum port running, but I honestly have no idea what to do with that platform, and looking at the YouTube videos, it doesn't look like I'm missing much.

There are fewer levels, and they don't scroll horizontally, so they throw more bullets and respawning enemies at you. And load times. Man, playing what's effectively a NES game with loading screens is a real mindfudge.

Free McBoot still requires you to patch an out-of-region disc before you can play it. https://www.reddit.com/r/ps2/comments/3ndah1/is_it...

You can also copy the game to USB as an ISO, and use Free McBoot to launch Open PS2 Loader to play it. Those ports on the PS2 are only USB 1.1, though, so some games have issues streaming data fast enough. Playing from a phat's internal hard drive is usually more reliable.

I'm a bit late, but I finally beat Spirit Tracks

image
image

I played Phantom Hourglass last year and was surprised how much I enjoyed it despite the touch-only controls and heavy focus on sailing, so I was excited to finally play Spirit Tracks. The soundtrack was great, MUCH better than Phantom Hourglass. Also, I liked the way Zelda had a more active role in the game, via the phantoms. Aside from those two things, Phantom Hourglass was much better. The train travel was kinda fun at first, but I quickly grew to hate it. It's SO slow. I kind of wish I had just done a regular playthrough instead of going for 100%. That way, there would have been much less traveling to do. But, going for 100% requires so much extra travel time, it takes forever. Even if I hadn't gone for 100%, I still think I would have disliked the train. Aside from that, Phantom Hourglass had better humor and better dungeons. Also, the central tower that you return to multiple times was much better in PH. I didn't care for many of the floors in the one in ST, especially the dark rooms. Not sure how much of a spoiler it is, but one thing I did really like in ST was:

the Dark Link fight! It wasn't particularly hard, but still a nice surprise!

All in all, I did enjoy it, and I'm glad to have played it, but I doubt I'll ever play it again.

@Lunar Went back and beat another '18 title, this time June's pick - Arrow Flash on Sega Genesis

Enjoyable title, not all that difficult, short at only 5-6 levels long. But great music and for a 30 year old game it was fun. I think I'll play it some more, likely on hard and approach it differently this time as I wasn't aware of the mode change from mech to plane until after 60+% of the game. Plus SHUMPs that are done well are always enjoyable.

Not nominating this game, but I wonder if anyone has any thoughts on it - Advanced Busterhawk Greylancer, sometimes just titled as Greylancer, a '92 Sega Genesis title.
It's in my list of ROMs and the box art looked interesting so I fired it up. It has a really cool 5 min intro before you get to the start menu with some excellent music.

Did a little digging and it was apparently a Japan only release, even though the 5 min intro is in English (text on screen, no voice work) and I watched some demo gameplay and it has some English spoken lines as well. So getting the physical cart would be crazy expensive, but has anyone else played it, have any thoughts on it?

I just played another Genesis SHUMP, so I'm in that sort of gaming mood and it looks rather well done.

I thought Arrow Flash was a nice little title with enjoyable gameplay. The transformation was a nice touch. I feel like they could have done more for that mechanic, like different transformations for replay value.

Anyway, it's a little nice title that's gotten a huge boost in value in the past couple of years(it's obviously because of the GotM wink). Check out the Japanese version for cool art. US always gets craptier box art for some reason.

I got the Turrican Flashback collection in today, so I'll be playing Super Turrican regardless of the votes. I tried the first two and they seem pretty hard. They do let you use cheats though. It just says that you won't get "achievements" that way, which don't seem to even be in the game. It just disables your score if you use them.

The Satiator is working flawlessly so far. The installation was just dropping a menu.bin and you can start loading up ROMs.

I like to have the convenience of loading up ROMs but like to have the option to still play discs. Good option even if it's more expensive than the rest.

The order goes like this: Pseudo Saturn/AR+, then disc, then Satiator.

I think there's a way to bypass the AR+ and go directly to the Satiator if you are just using the AR for memory storage

Easiest way is to just use component cables and hope your TV isn't awful with 480i/480p. RAD2X, if you can find one for MSRP, ships from UK though, basically a PS2 only Retrotink.

It's just easier to have a OSSC or Retrotink, not saving alot of money by going other routes.

Yeah, last time I looked it up the price difference between a specific one VS Retrotink/OSSC, going for the Retrotink/OSSC is a better option.

Surprised you haven't played them. I know you play alot of JRPGs. It's not perfect but a very traditional light-hearted(for the most part),boy fights to save girl and the world RPG.

Good characters, great music, translation was touted as good quality but now looking back, I find the translation inauthentic and peppered with now outdated American pop culture references.

I guess it makes sense to do what WD did with the translation, since many of the Japanese culture references would not have resonated with the typical American audience.

I played the Sega CD version for the first time on Lunar New Year last year, and I'm doing the same this year with the PlayStation release. They're spot-on JRPG archetypes that don't hide what they are, and they came out in area that predates a lot of the fluffing and puffing that happens with the genre these days. It's a breath of fresh air.

And yeah, the music is great. I miss the Sega CD soundtrack this time around, though.

I beat this tonight. overall it was pretty decent, liked some of the music, but the 2 areas where you need to ascend a vertical almost shaft sucked. The first I mentioned just prior, the gusty snow section, and the next was the last section before the final boss, those odd elevator-like platforms. Granted they weren't as bad as the section just before that all with the annoying face-huggers all on slight slopes making them harder to hit. Not fully grasping how to use the ball form didn't help.
Glad it was selected, I might try out the sequel. They also released a game also called Super Turrican on the NES in Europe, so I might check that version out.

Agree with Kommie, it wasn't too difficult. I played 3 sessions and besides the 2 sections I mentioned most of it was easy enough - likely spent 1.5 hours total, maybe closer to 2. I used save states as I prefer to use them vs. dying and restarting from checkpoints now in games like that. That said, avoid the greenish weapon, it sucks. I used the red spread shot a lot to start, but switched to the blue one later on.

The hardest sections for me were the aforementioned ice level, which had some stupid jumps, and the very last level, until I realized you could blow through it in a few seconds by going into Morph Ball mode and YOLOing. (I know that's not what it's called, but come on, it's Morph Ball mode.)

Boss patterns are pretty easy to learn, but they take a while to kill.

I have a Switch that's eligible for this hack, and I bought the little tab that's supposed to trigger it, but I couldn't get it to work. Maybe I'll try again later on, like when the Switch gets its refresh.

Or, I could keep crossing my fingers that somebody comes out with a handheld MiSTer enclosure. Some people were working on that for a while, but it seems like most attention is on the MiSTcade at the moment.

@Lunar, I assume you're using RetroArch to take those screenshots. How stable is the resume functionality? I have RetroArch installed on my Vita, and having the console come back from resume messes with the audio output.

Resume is working ok so far. Retroarch has a pause function, so the game auto pauses, and you have to press "-" + "+" together to bring up the in game menu and press again to resume.

I'll know more in a week or so.

Are you using a RCM Loader @Renaissance2K ? Mine didn't work with it. I injected the payloads on PC myself. Took some tries but it's finally working now.

8BitMods is taking pre-orders for the ultimate PS1 memory card. It accepts any Micro SD card from 1GB-1TB and converts it into virtual memory cards, allows you to manage and backup saves over wifi, integrates with the xStation (and, theoretically, other ODEs that add support for it) to automatically load the appropriate card as you select a game, and has a built-in OLED screen for displaying the active virtual card.

This may be the wrong group or thread for this, but I thought you may be interested.

I recently met up with an old bandmate of mine and he gave me some of my old music equipment back. In the pile of stuff was a GameBoy Advance with this in the slot.

image

I preordered this on PixelH8's MySpace back in the day (probably 2008). I remember being blown away that something that allowed you to play GameBoy sounds live, using the GameBoy as an instrument, existed. I was aware of things like LSDJ and Nanoloop, but there wasn't any easy way at the time to play their sounds through MIDI. Also, flash cards existed at the time, but they were much less common. Most places that carried them either overcharged or were out of stock.

When I saw PixelH8 offering these, I knew I had to get one.

The cartridge has some kind of propriety input to flash the rom. I am not sure why he didn't bother numbering the cartridges, but regardless he wrote "xxx" on it. It came with single page print out of instructions that I still have somewhere.

image

While I love this thing, it's a disappointment. I have never used this live, and it never lived up to the live instrument that I wanted it to be. Trying to create a "musical feel" with it is nearly impossible. Flowing a rhythm impossible, and you only access to one 8 notes at a time. The buttons on the GameBoy just weren't designed to make responsive music. I have recorded it a few time, which is much more forgiving as I can edit it in-post. I have thought about sampling it and using the sounds in a custom Arduino-based instrument, but I never follow through.

About a year after I bought it, PixelH8 posted the rom to his website. I'm sure it's still out there somewhere if anyone is curious about checking out the program.

This was the original video PixelH8 posted to show it off. I'm glad this is still online: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opExJC12gIg&ab_cha...

The up, down, left, right, L, R, B and A operate as the keys to play notes, with up being the lowest note in the scale, and it going up one note in the scale in respect to that button order. Those can not be rearranged.

You can choose some options to adjust the sound of the instrument in a menu. I could go through them, but if you have any experience with basic synth wave forms, this picture pretty much says it all. (I couldn't find my GBA charger, so I had to put it in the Retron 5)

image

You can pick 2 scales (Major or Minor, Harmonic Minor, Whole, Pentatonic) in any key you like. When in "player mode", you screen switched to a picture of a piano and you can play your notes.

image

Pressing the Start button shifts between the keys. Pressing Select raises octave between Octave 2, 3 and 4.

The "Special" option adds some additional functionality. Most of them add different harmonies to the note being played. There is also an arpeggiator that cycles through the notes being held down from lowest to highest. There are also other fun effects like a tremolo, portamento and shifter.

The "Sound Effects" section offers different sound effects that you may want to you. They are grouped as Game, Alien, Bad Tv, Crunch and Drums. All of these sound like classic game effects you would hear in games like Space Invaders. Drums is disappointing as it is not at all like the crunchy drum sounds you might hear in Mario. I would have called it Explosions. The "Sound Effects" can not be adjusted, and when you go into "player mode" you just get a picture of the PixelH8 avatar.

I found this archived link to his page. I don't know if the download links work, I'm on my phone. https://web.archive.org/web/20090516233207/http://...

If nothing else, it's just a little more history on the software.

EDIT: Went to the link on my PC and was able to download the Rom from the Wayback Machine (link above). There are links for the Tech Pro Performer, Music Tech V2.0, Drum Tech and Deathy Ray (which I think is an actual page typo as it refers to it as "Death Ray Noise Generator" in other sections of the site).

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time Super Nintendo
Shantae Game Boy Color
Ghouls 'n' Ghosts Sega Genesis Sega Master System Amiga Commodore 64 NEC Super Grafx

Either publicly in this thread or privately in a PM to me, give each nominee 0-5 points. Omitting a nominee is equivalent to giving it a vote of 0. The game with the highest score by the end of the month will be the March 2021 GOTM.

I haven't voted in past months, but I'm working around any concerns by being the first to vote:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time - 5
Shantae - 4
Ghouls 'n' Ghosts - 3
Lost Vikings - 3
Shining Force - 1

No offense to Shining Force... I do want to play it at some point. I just don't want to be playing three 20+ hour JRPGs at the same time.

Don was my favorite from his demeanor/intellect in the cartoon, also like staffs and Kilik in Soul Calibur for that weapon.
Leonardo was my second favorite. I found Mike annoying and was more/less indifferent on Raphael.

When I was a kid I liked Mikey a lot more too. And to play in the games Leonardo had such a cool jumping
slash. I also preferred Donatello because of his intellect and obviously he's the purple turtle.
The bo staff was also awesome in my favorite TMNT game the original arcade game. Not the
NES version. That was such a letdown. I almost got the arcade 1up game for my nephews.
Prolly would have had to keep it here though.

Well, aren't they both Konami circa early 90's on the Snes?

I have never played Sunset Riders that I can remember though so I can't say for sure without youtubing it.
Now I'm curious.

Edit: they are similar, they both use the obnoxious over the top drumbeat that sounds like something they later prolly recycled into DDR Tracks.
Both stages music tracks are annoying AF but I would say the TMNT song is less obnoxious. Also the notes in the TMNT track are vaguely similar to some old western. I have no idea which one though.

Just wrapped this up, total time to beat it was 30:02 according to the final screen though it took me longer. I beat the Super Nintendo ROM on my PC using an X1 controller. Only used save states at beginning of levels except for the F-Zero stage as I was lower on health and a few times in the final stage again for the same reason.
Beat it with Don, on normal and used 1 continue as I was down to 1 life when I got sent to the past and that dino level and ultimately the boss Slash kicked my butt - was not a fan of him at all. But I held onto my lives just enough to only have to use that 1 continue. Though BeBop and Rocksteady were a bit of a challenge too. Didn't find most of the other bosses too difficult. I might beat this again with a different turtle, not sure that I'd bother with hard mode but we'll see.

I have Mame setup and a big set of titles, but I'm not 100% sure if TMNT4 is included - I see some TMNT folders, so I might look into it - I was collecting a lot of ROMs last summer/fall and got sick of all that management so I took a break from it. Might use this to work on that management again... or maybe not.

Renaissance2K

I just pulled a full set from archive.org and imported it into Launchbox. Both TMNT arcade games were included.

The download takes a long time, but other than that, it was a pretty painless process.

Slickriven
GameTZ Subscriber Gold Good Trader Has Written 1 Review
3-Mar(#270)
Yeah pretty sure that's where I got my set as well, it was huge. As stated I was collecting a lot last year, am using LaunchBox and like that whole setup, but then LB glitched on me and lost like every setup title. So I had to redo things with it and I just got burned out on that. Plus I've collected whole sets and have many duplicates to deal with. Lately I've been working to chip away at the task and after recently setting up my PC platforms fully on there with Steam, GoG and others, I'm up over 5200 total titles - with dups across PC platforms but also other systems as well.

I sort of ran out of HDD space and was considering what device I wanted to buy to add space. I have my PS1 Classic modded and figured I'd get my complete PS1 ROM set on there but was trying to decide if I just wanted to keep them on my PC as I've got the PS1 in my office anyhow and my PC uses better speakers. Oh well, something to deal with later on.

Just beat TMNT IV (SNES) on Hard, solo! This has been something I've wanted to do for a very long time. I remember trying it a few times as a kid but could never make it further than Starbase, usually dying at the Krang fight. It's been on my to-do list, but I never made time for it. It was so satisfying to finally complete it! This game actually does a good job of increasing the difficulty from Normal to Hard. There are more enemies throughout the levels (and more of the more difficult enemies), plus the bosses have more difficult attack patterns. There also seemed to be less pizzas throughout the levels, and enemies seemed to deal more damage, but it's been a little while since the last time I played on Normal so I can't say for sure. I didn't think Slash could be any more annoying, but somehow he is on Hard mode. Also, the Shredder fight is ridiculous! He moves so fast, the window to actually get a hit in on him is almost non-existent. Plus his green attack is so brutal (insta-death) and has way too large of a hit window.

I'm considering going for a 2nd clear, but don't really feel like playing re-shelld again since I just played it last year. How does the arcade version compare to the SNES version? Better/worse? Easier/harder? Any notable differences?

Renaissance2K
GameTZ Subscriber Triple Gold Good Trader Has Written 4 Reviews
23-Mar(#286)
The SNES version has additional levels and turns the surfing stages into Bonus Rounds.

The arcade version is easier in the sense you can just spam quarters. There's also no Easy Mode Mockery and you get the true ending, regardless of how you play.

I'm newer here and after looking up all of the prior 3 years worth of titles am curious as to what platforms are generally considered as Retro?
I summed up the selections from '18 til this month and counted titles that I knew were on multiple systems accordingly. Here are the results:
Nintendo Entertainment System 11
Super Nintendo 6
Nintendo 64 1
Game Boy 1
Game Boy Advance 1
Nintendo DS 1

Sega Genesis 8
Sega CD 3
Sega Saturn 2

PlayStation 3
PlayStation 2 2

Microsoft Xbox 1
NEC TurboGrafx-16 3

Seems like PlayStation 2 Microsoft Xbox Nintendo DS are the most recent generation essentially. Also been more heavily focused on NES, SNES, Genesis with 25 games on those systems and only 18 on other 10 consoles.
That makes sense with I'd guess the general age of our members and those consoles being largely considered the retro systems overall, without getting into the next older group of Atari and so forth.
