Shining Ogre Fire Tactics: beat a strategy/tactical RPG
Grown-Ass Man: complete a game from the following series: Castlevania (pre-SotN), anything From Software, and Contra (and any other Konami 2D shooter, for that matter). The first individual game that I included was Cuphead. If you feel like you beat a balls hard game and are deserving of this icon, post on here and the community will deem whether you earn it or not.

Lastly, despite the fact that several games fit multiple categories, a particular completion only counts towards one icon. For example: Super Mario World would count towards the Super Mayrio icon, but not the Hoppin' & Boppin' one. I understand this could get a little confusing, but that's how it's gonna be!

It's a new year, but you guys know the drill at this point: you give me your system list, you tell me when you've beaten a game, and I keep track of it. Oh and badges. I never dreamed those would've caught on like they did last year, so expect more of the same in 2021.

In addition to keeping track of the overall leaders in games beaten and systems covered, I'm going to keep track of the former on a monthly basis as well. That way if someone has a particularly prolific 30 day stretch, that number will be immortalized in a separate category and won't be buried under Renaissance2K for all eternity .

That'll do it for this portion and see below for what's actually important, the lists!

good beat em up by Jaleco. You can throw guys into the background and break up the walls. I downloaded something called fans of sauce 4.5 yipee kay yay which has 1600 arcade games. I'm never going to play all of them, lol. But I do LOVE arcade beat em ups. It has a nice front end with previews of what the games look like b4 you play. This is a huge upgrade over how I had been playing this machine. And now with a bar stool, it's super comfortable.

Another one bites the dust.

arcade - Armored Warriors

Liked it better than I thought I would. I prefer smaller or more nimble characters in brawlers. So the idea of huge clunky mechs was not appealing. However with the various feet and arms you can pick up, it made for some fun varying double tap rush attacks.

I was in a Castlevania mood, so I went ahead and beat Castlevania: Bloodlines. This one wasn't played on the Collection, unlike the others--I played it on the original Sega Genesis hardware. It's a pricier Castlevania game for sure, but I won a bad-condition copy for relatively cheap back in high school. Went with John Morris on normal mode. I might replay it in expert mode later on to get some use out of Eric Lecarde.

@Antipop If I beat Bloodlines again on the Switch Anniversary Collection, does that count twice? Or is it already covered by this playthrough?

Game #21, JRPG #2 so this goes towards image PC / Windows The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero ---- More of Renee's fudgeed up backstory is revealed in this one. She has some cryptic dialogue in Sky: SC that is confirmed in Sky: TC although, it's missable if you don't do the Doors, but why would you play Sky: TC and not do those doors? Zero is definitely one of the best in the series for one big reason: You only ever really control 4 main heroes at a time. No 10+ party members that you have to always keep leveled up in order to progress when you're forced to use everyone. I really hate that about these games. It's too bad these will never get an official translation though but I must say the Geofront translation feels no different than the XSeed Sky translations.

beat arcade - Battletoads

this is definitely my favorite one so far. I have been going through these alphabetically (if you can tell) but skipping and saving some of the best ones for last. For example, Aliens vs. Predator. But this one surprised me. I'd rate it as the only 5/5 I've played so far today. Graphics are really nice, nice art style. And of course the beat em up is very satisfying. I never played any of the Battletoads on NES, SNES, etc. because I heard they were frustratingly hard. But with an at home arcade machine guess what? Infinite quarters!

Game #26
F1 2019 - Microsoft Xbox One

I watched the latest season of Drive to Survive on Netflix the other week (fantastic show about the F1 season from the previous year, kind of a recap/docu-series thing. I no longer watch F1, so this show is amazing to me as I get the whole season wrapped up in 10 episodes of drama). And it made me want to play an F1 game again. And since I wasn't about to spend $60 on last years version, I played this one since it was on gamepass still. Just completed the story/season mode thing. Its been a few years since I've played an F1 game. In this one they tried to have kind of a story mode in the career. You start in F2 and then your rival and team mate in F2 move up with you into F1. Which has no impact on the F1 season at all. It was not thought out very well, or well executed. And after one season (21 long ass races) I'm done with this game. By about race 14 I was over it. But I powered through. I originally signed with HAAS. But after 12 races ended up moving to McLaren. Finished 4th in the constructors with McLaren, and 6th in the what ever the driving standings are called these days. F1 is fun, but hard and long as hell.

After 3 racing games in one month, I'm raced out. I was going to attempt to play Forza 7 as I have yet to play that. But I don't think I can now.

Time for an update: Kirby's Adventure in Dreamland Nintendo Entertainment System, and Yoshi's Island Super Nintendo were beaten. Kirby's Adventure in Dreamland was pretty fun, albeit short. It seemed like a longer Kirby's Dreamland Game Boy. The seven worlds could have easily been completed in an afternoon. The Fountain of Dreams was by far the most difficult part of the game, it took me around half a dozen tries to kill that orb before I smashed into the ground.

Yoshi's Island was of course very fun. I have completed the game before maybe about 15 years ago, and I remembered some of the levels being more difficult than they were. The bosses were the best part, my favorite being 3-8 Naval Piranha.

#35 down- Ultra Street Fighter IV on PS4. It looks pretty nice, but I found that a lot of the moves were tough for me to pull off. I'm not that great at more technical fighting games. Fortunately, spamming the moves I could figure out worked well enough. I got a $1 trial for PS Now and this was my first game on it.

It took over two months, and we're six weeks removed from Lunar New Year, but I finished Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete on PlayStation.

Last year, answering a call-to-arms from @Lunar and playing through my first non-Square JRPG since Legend of Legaia, I tackled the original Lunar on Sega CD. The game doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles, but it played briskly, was relatively bloat free, and seemed to be a prime example of a game that took good advantage of Sega CD hardware. It was a solid Genesis game with a great soundtrack and seasoned with small anime-style cutscenes; not the pixelated, stamp-sized FMV nonsense that riddled the platform. It was enough to kickstart a franchise, but it was primitive, and the story was functional but oddly-paced, even before you consider how abruptly it ends.

I don't know if I buy the story that Silver Star Story Complete is the story the original developers intended to tell, but the PlayStation remake is a dramatic improvement in nearly every way. While the game is still a 2D top-down RPG like the greatest 16-bit classics, everything is redrawn from scratch to take advantage of the new platform's horsepower and less-restrictive color palette. The script has exploded with new plot details, story expansions, and dialogue that imbues a ton of personality into the characters. Those anime cutscene snippets have been reproduced and expanded in the wake of the late-90s cinematic RPG revolution. The soundtrack has also been completely redone with barely any reference to the original, which I consider a sidestep at best. While the new tunes are certainly more numerous, I had grown really attached to the original, including the synth-heavy intro which seemed to squeeze an entire decade of music into a 90-second FMV.

Playing the game felt like meditation to me, and I mean that in the best way. There weren't any abrupt random battles to discourage exploration or cultivate frustration. Battles still move quickly, and now that abilities and items finally have flavor text, casting a spell is no longer a reminder of how terrible my memory is. The new translation - which a friend from high school adored when the game was first released - does succeed in putting a voice to each of the five characters, which seemed to blend together in the original, but holy crap, how much weed was in the writer's room while the game was being developed? There are so many ridiculous pop-culture references, frat boy one-liners, and 90s radicalisms that my dad brain could barely handle it. I played through the game with the official strategy guide (don't judge me... I already played through the original, and playing through a 90s RPG with the guide is its own special experience) and the guide has the same teenage sense of humor, albeit with even more references to the female anatomy. Seriously, I think this game references boobs more than Dead or Alive.

As much as I enjoyed the game, I'll admit that I spent a lot of this second playthrough wondering what about it turned it into such a beloved classic. It does everything well enough to be a great experience, but it's been ported, remade, and sequelized as much as Spider-Man. Is it really that good? Well, the last quarter of the game - specifically, this version of the game - really lived up to the hype. The stupid 90s dialogue took a backseat to some genuine drama and character development, and the conflict on screen finally started to live up to the conflict referenced by the dialogue. Plus, there's something about Alex and Luna's relationship that elevates it above a great number of two-bit RPG romances. They say that the cardinal rule of writing is to "Show, don't tell" but the adorable, muted romance between the two of them is obvious before the L-word ever comes into the picture.

Until my jacked-up PlayStation with PS1Digital and MODE arrived, I played through Lunar primarily on my PSP as a game I could quickly pick up and play at any moment. With that track now open, I'm planning on picking back up Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, which I started at the end of 2019 but never managed to finish. BioShock is entering the queue soon as well for Frank's Game of the Month thread, but I'm waffling on whether or not I'll play through the game with some XIM-enhanced flavor of Xbox or just the PC version. In any case, that'll be two new platforms to check off in this thread.

Yet another done! I just beat Donkey Kong Land on my Game Boy Advance for the first time since high school. Hated it then, like it overall now. The graphics and originality are pretty great for a Game Boy companion game to DKC. The physics leave something to be desired, though, and there are many times when one slip-up kills BOTH Kongs for an arbitrary reason. But it's a fun game if you can get past the first few stages. Kremlantis is particularly fun. It's like I always say: Never judge a platformer by its first world.

@Antipop I think this earns me the Hoppin' and Boppin' badge. Drawn to Life is a 2D platformer, and even if it's not considered, New Super Luigi U definitely fits that description.

I got into DKC at the beginning of high school, and found myself disappointed with all the portable games--DKL especially. I couldn't get over the shortcomings. I was pleasantly surprised this time!

An okay FMV game from one of my favorite FMV makers, Wales Interactive. This one is not their best work. I didn't hate it, but I wouldn't recommend this game to someone who doesn't love FMV games. This one is pretty short too, clocked in under 2 hours.
