Shining Ogre Fire Tactics: beat a strategy/tactical RPG
Grown-Ass Man: complete a game from the following series: Castlevania (pre-SotN), anything From Software, and Contra (and any other Konami 2D shooter, for that matter). The first individual game that I included was Cuphead. If you feel like you beat a balls hard game and are deserving of this icon, post on here and the community will deem whether you earn it or not.

Lastly, despite the fact that several games fit multiple categories, a particular completion only counts towards one icon. For example: Super Mario World would count towards the Super Mayrio icon, but not the Hoppin' & Boppin' one. I understand this could get a little confusing, but that's how it's gonna be!

It's a new year, but you guys know the drill at this point: you give me your system list, you tell me when you've beaten a game, and I keep track of it. Oh and badges. I never dreamed those would've caught on like they did last year, so expect more of the same in 2021.

In addition to keeping track of the overall leaders in games beaten and systems covered, I'm going to keep track of the former on a monthly basis as well. That way if someone has a particularly prolific 30 day stretch, that number will be immortalized in a separate category and won't be buried under Renaissance2K for all eternity .

That'll do it for this portion and see below for what's actually important, the lists!

Game #27
I saw Black Clouds - PlayStation 5

An okay FMV game from one of my favorite FMV makers, Wales Interactive. This one is not their best work. I didn't hate it, but I wouldn't recommend this game to someone who doesn't love FMV games. This one is pretty short too, clocked in under 2 hours.

We can cross off Pokemon Mini from our list because I just completed Pokemon Pinball MIni. Not a traditional pinball game, Pokemon Pinball Mini has its charm as a neat puzzle game. There were 70 total levels and golly some were quite difficult. Level 45 was not fun in the slightest.

Super Lucky's Tale Microsoft Xbox Series X|S - Not sure why I do this to myself. A few achievements shy of getting the full 2k but got most of the them, even the stupid ones. Not quite as infuriating as some of The Touryst's more infamous moments, but some of the levels in this game are rather difficult as well. There's two achievements for grinding out coins I haven't gotten (30,000 and then 99,999). I likely won't get them for a while because it requires HOURS of tedious grinding and reloading worlds. I liked the game, and have beaten all the levels + DLC levels, since they're free to add. Game is on Gamepass and apparently has two versions, both of which have their own achievements. The one I played was the original. Other than that not much to say, as its a competent platformer.

Life is Strange Microsoft Xbox Series X|S - I wrote this game off a long time ago, as the teenage angst early on turned me off. Decided to finally go through it and am glad I did - I had a good time with this. I even bought the sequel when it was on sale, so I'll be going through that eventually as well. Currently working through Beyond the Storm aside from a few others. Some bad dialogue scattered throughout in this but it tells the story well and gets you involved.

Tell Me Why Microsoft Xbox Series X|S - I didn't really like this one as much but I finished it and got all the achievements anyway, hoping it would get better. It wasn't awful but after LiS, this wasn't comparable in my opinion. I would say the situations of the twins was probably more messed up overall though, and the Book of Goblins was cool. I'm not sure I can recommend this one as highly. If you have nothing to play then go for it, but its on Gamepass and if you have that, you already have plenty of crap to play - take that for what you will.

Resident Evil 3 Microsoft Xbox Series X|S - Not sure if this counts since I did a completion last year on PS4, but if it does - throw it up there. I'm 800/1000 on achievements. Just did 3 runs, 1 of which netted the no item box (I hated this one), use of only 1 healing item achievements and beating the game within 2 hours. I think only achievements I have left are related to Inferno difficulty. I'll give that a shot this weekend probably.

I THINK Super Lucky's Tale gets me the Bear and Bird icon, but I'm not sure how some of the games counted. I've beaten several 3D platformers, but some could also have counted as puzzle games sort of.

Welp, March went by very fast for me. My completions were:

Monster Hunter World (PS4) The first MH game I played was the one on the Wii and really liked it. I tried playing 4 on the 3DS, but I never got far because I was playing on an original unit and the button scheme was a bit cumbersome. Knowing about the amount of content in this one, I was eager to play it, but I waited to find a cheap copy with Iceborne included. The game looks great and has all that you can expect from an MH title. I'll be listing Iceborne as a separate title if I start and finish it.

TLOZ: Link's Awakening (Switch) My fav Zelda ever, remade. I really enjoyed revisiting Koholint with new graphics, which I liked. The visual style reminds me of 3D Dot Game Heroes. I feel like this version is easier to beat, maybe because of me playing the original so much or because there are some quality of life improvements, especially on the item management side. One thing I miss is the photo mouse, I always liked to go for the pictures. Couldn't care less about the dungeon creator, lol.

And thanks to Frank's thread about free Android games, I managed to save my month with:

Colorzzle (Android) Some cool puzzles here. I found the game not that difficult, but there are some later levels that left me thinking.

A Tale of Little Berry Forest (Android) This is a game clearly aimed at children, but I finished it because I liked the art design.

Of course. By a fudging mile. This company actually makes decent FMV games. This one just isn't their best work. But they arguably make the best FMV games on the market. So this being their worst, it is still better than 75% of other FMV games out there. I don't think anything is worse than TQM. Holy crap that game is bad.

That game had some really neat mechanics. There was a particular stage (an earlier one) that was really cool. You simply touched the screen and held your finger there, and if you timed it correctly (which anyway you had to in order to proceed) the spheres would keep on rotating around the obstacles without pausing. Very cool to see/experience.

Yeah, and the epilogue adds almost as many new obstacle types as the main game. It's really satisfying when it flows together nicely.

The post is updated! Only a few hours left in March and unless someone makes an ErickRPG type run, @Dasgessabel will be the top user for the month of March. What a turnaround he's made since last year! I'm also happy to see the return of @DragonmasterDX after a month long hiatus. Other March shout outs include:
- @SupremeSarna busting out in a major way with 12 clears
- @Slickriven mowing down 11 games and taking sole position atop the consoles covered race
- @Renaissance2K rounding into 2020 form, en route to downing 10 games
- @Bleed_DukeBlue maintaining the top spot in overall games beaten with a rather studly 10 more clears this month
- @Scott with a yearly high four games cleared
- @JD registering a pulse(!)
- the aforementioned @ErickRPG and my boy @Gypsy for powering through tough times
- @tonymack21 and I being the models of consistency, yet again clearing one and three games, respectively
- @RobotVM for finally getting on the shtick an...oh, my mistake. He's still a ghost

Get in your last second clears and I'll see you in April!

Arcade - The Legend of Silk Road

3/5. Decent game. Has a fighting move type special system with a gauge for extra attacks. Have the basic attack/jump (use health) spin, magic attacks, and then the "moves". The only one I could figure out and do consistantly was back forward attack.

There's really no "cheating" anyway since this is all in good fun. There is no prize other than bragging rights really.

Maybe we should make a separate topic that's a competition of 'Number of Games we own that we've never beat' . Winner gets more unplayed games. I wonder who'd win that one?

Gypsy probably. I used to own more games but realized I'd rather have money then a bunch of unplayed games and never to be played. Really glad I downsized. You could say it helped pay for my mame cabinet and virtual pin machine and those actually get played quite a bit!

Dang, I was hoping my 11 titles beat would get me the March mushroom... Oh well will have to try for another month.
Have to say that I'm a little surprised at myself as I'm currently on pace for over 100 games this year and am already past where I recall being at last year around July. I'm not sure if I'll stick to that 9/month pace, seems unlikely, but I'm progressing towards several personal goals and enjoying the increased participation from members.

You're not cheating Eric, enjoy as many games as you can. Also sorry to hear about your cat. We've got 4 and while I don't love them equally, the thought of losing one sucks.

3 more iOS games down: Assemble with Care, What the Golf and Empty.

First is a repairing game where you fix technology and meet the characters of this little town. Played it before so I skipped over all the story. Fun but occasionally frustrating, though it's usually pretty simple.

What the Golf was pretty neat if a little too gimmicky for me. All the homages and Easter eggs were really fun though. Definitely some frustrating levels but overall I enjoyed it. 4920 strokes, 2:47 hours.

Third is a game where you try to merge colored objects into walls of the same color to clear out rooms. Actually gets a bit harder than it sounds though usually low-challenge. Weird quotes and messages between levels weren't great though.

For the Retro Talkshop Thread's Game of the Month, I played through Metal Slug X for Neo Geo this evening.

I played through Metal Slug last year for this thread (as well as Alien Hominid, which may as well be a Metal Slug game), so it's not news that I'm a fan of the franchise. It was one of the few games that put Neo Geo and SNK on the map for me with its fun run-and-gun gameplay and its incredible sprite work. When I first played Metal Slug many moons ago as part of the SNK Arcade Classics collection for PSP, the very next thing I did after beating it was boot up Metal Slug 2.

As fun as it was - it took a great formula and added mummies, aliens, and diabetes - the PSP collection was not known for its incredible performance. Years later, I learned that maybe the PSP took the fall for a game that was never properly optimized, even on original hardware. Metal Slug X appears to be SNK's "do-over" for 2's notorious slowdown. While it still manages to chug a little bit when the crap hits the fan, it's a nice improvement, and the game is still a blast.

When I finished the original Metal Slug, I ended with the feeling that a little bit of memorization and practice is all I would need to master the game. I didn't finish X with that same feeling. I was shot, electrocuted, popped, melted, and burned more times than I could count, and the endgame summary was all to happy to remind me. While I can't say I'd be as chill about it if I was feeding a roll of quarters into a tall red cabinet, I'm happy to repeatedly die for the cause if it means seeing what other madness is around the corner.

In list maintenance news, I scored / impulse bought an Astro City Mini from Limited Run Games. I think this is as close as I'll ever come to having my own arcade cabinet, so I've upgraded Arcade from the "Misc" section to its own platform. We don't have an arcade icon (which makes me sad) so I'm using coin for obvious reasons.

After the time it took to hook up my AES and configure a decent capture, it seems like a waste just to stick it back in its drawer, so I loaded up a couple of celebrated Neo Geo titles into my flash cartridge and will play through one or two of them tomorrow night before switching my attention to BioShock, which is playing comfortably with a XIM Apex. I hope that this means I can dive into a handful of console-exclusive shooters without throwing any controllers.
