The first individual game that I included was Cuphead. If you feel like you beat a balls hard game and are deserving of this icon, post on here and the community will deem whether you earn it or not.

Lastly, despite the fact that several games fit multiple categories, a particular completion only counts towards one icon. For example: Super Mario World would count towards the Super Mayrio icon, but not the Hoppin' & Boppin' one. I understand this could get a little confusing, but that's how it's gonna be!

It's a new year, but you guys know the drill at this point: you give me your system list, you tell me when you've beaten a game, and I keep track of it. Oh and badges. I never dreamed those would've caught on like they did last year, so expect more of the same in 2021.

In addition to keeping track of the overall leaders in games beaten and systems covered, I'm going to keep track of the former on a monthly basis as well. That way if someone has a particularly prolific 30 day stretch, that number will be immortalized in a separate category and won't be buried under Renaissance2K for all eternity .

That'll do it for this portion and see below for what's actually important, the lists!

For the Retro Talkshop Thread's Game of the Month, I played through Metal Slug X for Neo Geo this evening.

I played through Metal Slug last year for this thread (as well as Alien Hominid, which may as well be a Metal Slug game), so it's not news that I'm a fan of the franchise. It was one of the few games that put Neo Geo and SNK on the map for me with its fun run-and-gun gameplay and its incredible sprite work. When I first played Metal Slug many moons ago as part of the SNK Arcade Classics collection for PSP, the very next thing I did after beating it was boot up Metal Slug 2.

As fun as it was - it took a great formula and added mummies, aliens, and diabetes - the PSP collection was not known for its incredible performance. Years later, I learned that maybe the PSP took the fall for a game that was never properly optimized, even on original hardware. Metal Slug X appears to be SNK's "do-over" for 2's notorious slowdown. While it still manages to chug a little bit when the crap hits the fan, it's a nice improvement, and the game is still a blast.

When I finished the original Metal Slug, I ended with the feeling that a little bit of memorization and practice is all I would need to master the game. I didn't finish X with that same feeling. I was shot, electrocuted, popped, melted, and burned more times than I could count, and the endgame summary was all to happy to remind me. While I can't say I'd be as chill about it if I was feeding a roll of quarters into a tall red cabinet, I'm happy to repeatedly die for the cause if it means seeing what other madness is around the corner.

In list maintenance news, I scored / impulse bought an Astro City Mini from Limited Run Games. I think this is as close as I'll ever come to having my own arcade cabinet, so I've upgraded Arcade from the "Misc" section to its own platform. We don't have an arcade icon (which makes me sad) so I'm using coin for obvious reasons.

After the time it took to hook up my AES and configure a decent capture, it seems like a waste just to stick it back in its drawer, so I loaded up a couple of celebrated Neo Geo titles into my flash cartridge and will play through one or two of them tomorrow night before switching my attention to BioShock, which is playing comfortably with a XIM Apex. I hope that this means I can dive into a handful of console-exclusive shooters without throwing any controllers.

there is a new arcade rom pack coming out from the people who made awesome sauce 4.5. 5.0 version and it's 30GB larger than what I already had. Can't wait to see what arcade games that WEREN'T in the mega 1,600 game bundle in version 4.5! Will likely have several more clears in the near future. Bought a 128gb stick because was advised on reddit 64gb was not enough for this one.

Metal Slug X
Badge: Counts towards already earned Pile Drivin'

Played for the Retro GotM club - having beat MS2 in the later half of last year and MS just last month, this was rather familiar. Have to say I didn't care for some of the boss battles, but using save states I didn't die until the final boss fight as I recalled it being tough and I didn't care to struggle a ton trying to stay untouched and get annoyed like I had been on some other boss fights - just wasn't worth it. I did end up saving some 69 POWs and got a rather high score, but I won't claim I 'earned' that score.

With 1, 2 and X all completed within the last ~6 months, I think I'll look to beat 3, 4 and 5 to complete the set. Plus I set a personal goal to beat at least 3 games in a few series/franchises this year, so I'll want to beat at least 1 more for that goal.

Metal Slug games are definitely in the "run and gun" genre; belt scroller brawlers, they are not. For this thread, they'd fall into the Grown Ass Man category. I feel like your liberal use of save states kinda contradicts the nature of that particular badge, so this clear is kinda in no man's land. I'm not slagging on you for playing in that manner, but in this case it just doesn't fit the description for any of the badges I've made.

I wouldn't have thought Metal Slug was all that difficult to be considered GAM badge. I figured it's really a side scrolling shooter which yeah we don't really have a badge for.

It's an old school arcade quarter munching title, so for sure it's meant to be difficult. I played it for the RGotM, so I didn't specifically play it for any badge, already earned or not. I think I could clear the first level or 2 without taking any damage, cannot fathom being good enough to clear 2/X's final boss without dying a few times... Granted other sections are tough too, like the sewer with the exploding floor/ceiling crawlers.

I'll will admit that I've become a touch too reliant on save states on games I play via emulation, will work on using that less, as it does cheapen the experience and the validity on some game clears from me.

To me, its all on how much DLC we are talking. Ancient Gods takes a bit to get through both so for me, it counts. It's an expansion pack in my mind, not an extra map or single mission like so many DLC. That's my definition. I spent about 6 hours total on that, which is longer than a lot of new games. Hell it's longer than Contra too lol. I would say that since it's not my first clear on Xbox it's not a big deal either way.

I'd say DLC doesn't count as a separate or new game. As it is just an extension of a game you have already played/completed. Regardless of how much more content it adds. It is still the same game, not a new game. Unless that DLC was released as a stand alone thing like Undead Nightmare, ODST, Episodes of Liberty City, Blood Dragon, Gat out of Hell, American Nightmare, etc. Things that were sold as their own thing and didn't require the original game to play. Otherwise, it is just an extension of something already completed.

Ancient Gods is 20 a piece, and it's a stand alone title. I would say a fully fleshed out campaign that costs 40 should count, even if it did require the base game. I'm betting it took closer to 7-8 hours to beat too.

Happy birthday to me! I beat Kirby's Block Ball on my Game Boy Advance today. I was looking at an eBay listing of an old demo cartridge. It was super expensive and the seller wouldn't budge on the price. I then read that every Game Boy demo cart is identical to the retail release, so I dumped the sale. But it got me in the mood to play the game again, so I popped it in and did that.

Metal Slug 3
Badge: Counts towards the 'non-existing' run/gun badge

So @Antipop I changed tactics a little and only used save states at beginning of level to preserve overall progress through the 5 levels... and I ended up with 52 continues since it's an arcade game and the select key gives you another fake quarter.
With 4 Metal Slug titles now beat recently I have to say 3 was likely my least favorite as a few sections I died a lot and didn't care for them. Lots of this is unsurprisingly more of 1/2/X but just some parts I didn't care for really at all. Also my new 'quarter muncher' approach vs. save states left me dying a TON and almost frustrated me more, plus a few sections it was impossible to not take damage - specifically in a few places in the final level's alien ship. Heck the final level felt longer than at least 2 maybe 3 earlier levels combined and sucked more too.

I still want to beat the remaining 2 that I have the ROMs for on the NeoGeo - 4 and 5. I also have the GBA and DS releases, but will focus on 4, 5 next though I might take a break from the series as I hit my own goal of 3 titles for now, maybe I'll revisit later in the year.

The last level in 3 is rough. I remember trying to beat it on Xbox and eventually giving up. I still think it's an excellent run and gun though, with enough humor to separate it from the pack.

Disco Elysium - PlayStation 5

You need to play this game. The writing in this game is brilliant. I'll be playing this more than once. However if you don't like visual novels, you wont like this. There is no action in this game. But that writing is top notch. The humor is on point. The ending is not what I expected either. I plan on replaying this immediately with a different character and making different choices. So many choices.

Great little brawler by Capcom. Almost a 5/5 but not quite. It's replayable because like those D&D brawlers, you can get new attacks in this game by spending coins. 5 fun and unique playable characters. Might play this game again next year probably.

Great looking game, pretty strong story and touching ending. Nice music and voice acting of your character, though at times she seemed to talk a little too much. I'm replaying a little bit to earn a few more Achievements as I suspect I can get them all easily. A few graphical issues existed where textures or whole parts of what you should see didn't get drawn in immediately. Only happened a few times and most were where you back tracked, and maybe they didn't expect you to - not 100% sure.
Took me around 7-8 hours I suppose, figure one could maybe beat it a little faster, though I enjoyed my visit to the island.
