Grown-Ass Man: complete a game from the following series: Castlevania (pre-SotN), anything From Software, and Contra (and any other Konami 2D shooter, for that matter). The first individual game that I included was Cuphead. If you feel like you beat a balls hard game and are deserving of this icon, post on here and the community will deem whether you earn it or not.

Lastly, despite the fact that several games fit multiple categories, a particular completion only counts towards one icon. For example: Super Mario World would count towards the Super Mayrio icon, but not the Hoppin' & Boppin' one. I understand this could get a little confusing, but that's how it's gonna be!

It's a new year, but you guys know the drill at this point: you give me your system list, you tell me when you've beaten a game, and I keep track of it. Oh and badges. I never dreamed those would've caught on like they did last year, so expect more of the same in 2021.

In addition to keeping track of the overall leaders in games beaten and systems covered, I'm going to keep track of the former on a monthly basis as well. That way if someone has a particularly prolific 30 day stretch, that number will be immortalized in a separate category and won't be buried under Renaissance2K for all eternity .

That'll do it for this portion and see below for what's actually important, the lists!

Call of the Sea
Badge: Counts towards already earned Guybrush

Great looking game, pretty strong story and touching ending. Nice music and voice acting of your character, though at times she seemed to talk a little too much. I'm replaying a little bit to earn a few more Achievements as I suspect I can get them all easily. A few graphical issues existed where textures or whole parts of what you should see didn't get drawn in immediately. Only happened a few times and most were where you back tracked, and maybe they didn't expect you to - not 100% sure.
Took me around 7-8 hours I suppose, figure one could maybe beat it a little faster, though I enjoyed my visit to the island.

Playing Metal Slug X last week was a firm bite from the Neo Geo bug. As I threatened then, I spent some time today exploring some Neo Geo games before returning my AES to its drawer, starting with SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos.

As my #BeatIt list from last year shows, I'm no stranger to the Capcom Vs. series. While I've spent most of my time with the Marvel crossovers, a bootleg copy of Capcom vs. SNK lived in my Dreamcast for more than a handful of hours when I was in college, back before I had ever played a King of Fighters or Fatal Fury game. I loved how customizable the fighting teams were, how you could select between different fight systems and styles, and most intriguingly, how your three team slots could be varyingly spent, depending on the power level of the characters you were choosing.

I was pumped to try SNK vs. Capcom out. It's been tempting me ever since I saw it at the top of a number of ROMlists with its massive size and unfathomably late release date. Being the third in the series, I was expecting a fireworks show that followed in the footsteps of its predecessors. That wasn't exactly the case. While I give the game credit for standing out from its competitors - and I do appreciate the art style - the game is fairly bare bones. No selectable fighting styles, no tag teams, no mega combos. Intentionally or otherwise, it's a throwback to the basic, classic games in each publisher's franchise with some odd and unnecessary flourishes. Are you one of the three people on planet Earth that has a desire to see Ryu poorly trash talk people? Well, hoo boy, do I have the game for you...

From there, I went from literally getting my ass kicked to figuratively doing so with Magician Lord.

I got strong Altered Beast vibes from this game early on - you do occasionally transform into super-powered animal monsters - but it doesn't take long to realize this game has more in common with Ghouls 'n' Ghosts than with Sega's furry brawler. The difficulty is high, the enemies are unforgiving, and the aforementioned powerups are blown away almost as quickly as they're obtained. Throw in some traps, bottomless pits, respawning "hurry up" enemies, and maze levels, and yeah, this is a rough ride.

It might just be because I can't get over how this game looks like a grown up Hocus Pocus on its surface, but it still manages to be fun. Boss fights are actually rather refreshing, considering how brutal the rest of the game is. The game controls pretty well as long as you're not on a ladder. And the soundtrack slaps, as every 2D arcade game should. If I played this in an arcade, though, I'd probably need a mortgage for all the quarters it would have taken me.

Finally, I closed out my hat trick with Blazing Star.

Okay, this game is pretty sweet.

I love me a good shooter, especially from this era, but damn if they're not all essentially holding down the A button while you scurry about like a cockroach under a spotlight. This game really tries to be different, though. There are a pretty wide selection of ships, and their weapons and special attacks manage to differentiate themselves pretty well. There's lots of great special effects, an abundance of pickups ("BONUS!!"), and some of the funniest Engrish translations I've ever read.

The game's charge shot mechanic, though, is really something. For a few ships, it behaves just how it does in every other shooter: hold the button down, and you release a bigger shot. Each ship's charge shot, though, does something different once it's activated. One ship essentially gets a "melee" attack that lights up everything it touches. Another releases a barrage of homing missiles. Yet another - my personal favorite - let's out a handful of pulse attacks that explode on contact with something and then stay active until your charge meter resets, dealing damage the hole time. It's a blast (ha!) setting one off during a boss fight and watching them take continuous damage, all while you're pelting a completely different target waiting for your meter to reset.

I spent most of my time with the green ship that fires the proximity charge shot above, but I'm already looking forward to another playthrough with a different weapon set.

BioShock Remastered is underway for Frank's Game of the Month thread, along with two long Final Fantasy games vying for my attention in moments when I don't feel like dragging out my Xbox's mouse and keyboard setup. It's probably gonna be a while before I have another game to add to the list.

So, isn't this technically on Xbox One? Even though I beat PS4 games on PS5 I still say it's a PS4 beat. Suppose it could just be up to the person what it counts towards

You're talking about 2 right? Did you ever get the beat in less than an hour/don't die Achievement in 1? I saw 2's list and it doesn't have anything ridiculous like that

Yeah, the 2nd one. Ya'll can both borrow it btw, decide who plays it first and then ship it to the other when you're done.

And I never went back to the first one to get that achievement, which is the only one I'm missing in 1 for all 2200 points. I got all the achievements fairly easily in 2, and nothing like that in the 2nd one at all. It was a smoother experience all around

I *finally* beat Spica's story in Cool Cool Toon for Sega Dreamcast. Cool Cool Toon is a very weird, but quite fun, rhythm game, made weirder by the fact that I don't speak or read a lick of Japanese, so I have no idea what the story is. Spica is one of the two routes you can take, with Amp being the other one. I might go back and play Amp later. Most of the game wasn't too hard, but the final level took me far too many tries.

Also beat Before I Forget for Steam, if you can call playing a short walking sim as beating a game.

I'm done with the Castlevania Anniversary Collection. I haven't beaten every game in it, but I feel I've gotten my $4 worth (it was on sale) out of these games. I beat Super Castlevania IV today ( Nintendo Switch ), and after playing 30 minutes of Kid Dracula, I'm comfortable leaving it behind.

I remembered Super being better than it was. This is one of the weaker games included. It starts out easy and smooth, but gradually descends in quality. The first thing that pops into my head when Super is mentioned is the miserable sewer room in Stage 8--long, frustrating, and leaves you with insufficient health to proceed. I totally forgot the broken room in the final stage with the spiked ring ang glitchy stairs. You know the one. And holy cow, Dracula took me a dozen game overs to beat! The fight is so difficult, the devs felt the need to include food drops mid-fight to assist the player. I can't think of another Castlevania game that does that.

This post probably comes off as a rant. I had some fun with Super, but it didn't live up to my high school memories, and the others I played weeks ago were superior in most ways. And for anyone curious, I'd rank the Collection games thusly:
1. Castlevania Bloodlines
2. Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (JP, then US)
3. Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge
4. Castlevania
5. Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
6. Super Castlevania IV
7. Castlevania: The Adventure
8. Kid Dracula

I'm going to let Castlevania cool off for a while before I return to Rondo of Blood and The Adventure: Rebirth.

Alright, I have a potential idea for my badge but I'd need approval.

After 34 hours and 12,000 deaths, I'm nearly at the first usb line of making my PS5 Celeste clear a platinum. It's easily been the most difficult gaming achievement of my life.

My question is, could this count towards my Manly Gamer badge? I don't have a second clear yet but I was curious if platinuming Celeste would count towards it.

I'd say yes, the endgame stuff in Celeste in insanely hard. I guess it also depends on if you used the in game cheat mode, I'm not sure if it disables Trophies.

I haven't played SCIV in a really long time, probably 25 years, but I have really fond memories of it. In recent years, I've been trying to play all of the Castlevania games I never played before, as well as replay the ones I've already played. SCIV is one of the few I still need to get to. I hope my experience isn't the same as yours though.

Ok, I know I haven't played it in a while, but SCIV below Simon's Quest and Belmont's Revenge? That seems pretty extreme. I really hope my opinion of it doesn't change THAT much. I'm not even a Simon's Quest hater, I see the good in it, but still...

Rondo of Blood is fantastic. Easily my favorite Castlevania game I've played recently. Still haven't played Adventure Rebirth, but I want to soon.

I beat Bakumatsuroman dai ni maku: Gekka no kenshi - Final Edition (AKA Last Blade 2) on Sega Dreamcast a couple of days ago. SNK in their prime; it's like a serene version of Samurai Shodown. Speaking of which, I fired up Samurai Shodown IV in attempt to snag the Street Fightin badge, but I started to get frustrated at the annoying CPU, so maybe I'll give it another shot today.
