I seem to recall there being a discussion thread for New Leaf, so thought I'd make one for New Horizons. This will actually be my first Animal Crossing game, and I also have the special edition Switch preordered. Amazon says it will be here next Tuesday.

The big difference with New Leaf is that everything has been in the game from day one (except that amiibo content they added years later).

New Horizons they have been trickling things into the game bit by bit, probably to prevent cheaters from just setting dates on their switch to get everything faster. It's definitely an intentional choice on Nintendo's part to make Animal Crossing more of a service-style game.

There are a lot of good things in NH (like landscaping, moving homes around, etc), but there are still a lot of things from NL that people want to see (the coffee shop, gyroids, multiplayer minigames, and things other people have mentioned)

I disagree that it sucked. It would if it lasted days or weeks, but it only lasted 24 hours, or less if you talked to the fortune teller and wore whatever she said your lucky clothing item of the day is. The luck feature worked in the opposite way too, shaking trees would drop extra bells.

It kinda reminds me of tripping in Smash Bros. Brawl laughing out loud

Oh, man, I forgot about the coffee shop! I loved that place!

Bring that back too!

I've been playing AC since it launched on the GC. It's been interesting watching all the changes (I wish they would bring back the yard sale/swap meet thing) but they seem to have eliminated a lot of stuff from New Leaf.

But not leveling up things like Nook's shop - that just seems ... odd. Why would they *not* want to do that?

When this game came out, I just assumed Brewster would have a place somewhere. I saved a spot just for him! After a while, I just decided to build my own.

Did you play Animal Crossing: City Folk on Wii? There's one feature it had that I liked, but anytime I bring it up in AC discussions most people are just "meh" on it because they never used it. It was basically like how in New Leaf you could put your own items up for sale in the Re-Tail shop and animals could buy them and so could friends when they visited your town online and they'd pay whatever price you listed it for.
But in City Folk it was an Auction House building in the city area and it was shared among people on your friend list. They could buy your items without having to actually visit you and the bells would be transferred to your ABD account. It used the WiiConnect24 feature of the Wii, so you didn't even have to be playing at the time for the transactions to go through. Unfortunately barely anyone on my friend list ever used it, so it was just wasted potential.

Now that I think about it, more people probably just used the fan-made auction sites like NookBay to sell items to each other.

The Wii version is the only one I've never played. I totally skipped the Wii/WiiU all together.

I had to confess that I used ... Nookbay (I think that was the one) to buy a buttload of gold ore so that I could save a little time.

No regrets.

New update live. A cake, expanded customization (buy w nook miles: standee, umbrella, fan and personal flag), and share/search custom designs shared via NES Online in game via nook phone (also bought w nook miles).

Edit: Also a rug and switch lites you can "purchase" in game for NES Online members. Download free through the NES Online app on the Switch (or e-shop). (I'm not sure if this is new)

Edit 2: I think the custom thing was always in the game at the clothes shop, but access on nook phone is new.

Thanks for the Hello Kitty clock, Colon! Did you get that from one of your Japanese AC buddies? I'm hoping to be able to snag those Sanrio amiibo cards on Friday.

I got it by scanning the Power Tag thingy. I use that for any game that has stuff locked behind amiibo.

The website he mentions where you download the amiibo data files from, it got taken offline a couple of months ago. You can still find the files with a quick Google search though, they usually lead to a Reddit thread where someone has a link.

I am extremely disappointed with how the release of the Nintendo amiibo Animal Crossing Sanrio Collaboration Packs was handled. So I was online precisely at 8:00 am central time, I added it in my cart successfully, but then I couldn't purchase it. Sold out already in a matter of seconds.

I never thought this would happen, but I'm officially hooked on this game! My kids have loved it for a while but I just never had any interest. Recently, I convinced my wife to try it because it seemed like a game she would actually like, and she immediately got hooked on it. They've been having a lot of fun visiting each others islands, giving each other gifts, etc, and I was starting to feel left out lol. So last night I started up my own island. I paid off my moving fees earlier today but have to wait for my house to be built tomorrow. I also saved up enough Nook miles to increase my pocket size which was very much needed. I caught the 15 creatures Blathers needed to upgrade the museum, but then couldn't give him anything else until the upgrade is complete, so I have tons of creatures laying around the outskirts of the plaza until then haha. I've seen several gifts float by but haven't received the DIY to make a slingshot yet, not sure when I'll get that. Any beginner tips y'all have would be appreciated, especially since I've never played ANY Animal Crossing game before. I'm particularly interested in knowing what things I should/shouldn't be doing that will help me down the road. For example, I know it can be a pain (and also expensive) to move/arrange larger things, so I'm trying my best to place things where I intend for them to stay. But, that's difficult when I don't know exactly how many shops/neighbors/etc I'll end up having, nor do I really have much of a vision of what I want my island to be like since I don't know what all will become available to me.

Some things I already know:

1) Visit Nook ATM every day
2) Hit rocks every day
3) Save weeds for a guy that comes and pays more for them
4) Save fish for a guy that pays more for them
5) Plant 10,000 bells in money hole each day to get 30,000 next day
6) Non-native fruit sells for more on your island

There's probably more that I'm just not thinking of. Any additional tips would be appreciated!

You'll end up with 10 animal villagers, Nook's Cranny, museum, campsite, Mabel shop and the building with Tom Nook and Isabelle. I think that's it. Other shopkeepers will show up in the plaza or wander the island, and Redd shows up in a boat behind the island.

But yeah, I was surprised how hooked I was when I first started playing. I don't play as much anymore. Just have so many other games I'm trying to get through.

The Nintendo Switch Online app was updated for ACNH to add in Nook Points. You can earn 10 points per day by checking in, and then use them to buy special items.

Katrina is still not in the game at all but she gives "words of wisdom" via the app now. Pretty worthless though since they don't seem to have any affect on anything.

I've just realized that there are different colored mushroom platforms available. I have the large red one and a yellow small one. I'm looking to trade these for different colors. Anyone else want to trade?

I confirmed the color can be changed on at least the two mushroom platforms and the green shell using the custom kits in nook shop.

I've been playing every day since I last posted. I've upgraded my house enough times to have 2 extra rooms, and I almost have enough money to upgrade again. I also did the thing where you pick the spots for three new neighbors and then you have to craft a bunch of furniture for them. One neighbor moved in today, and I think another is coming tomorrow. My museum has upgraded twice now, and I have Nook's Cranny. Also got to build my first bridge (can't wait to be able to build all the bridges and inclines I want). I have a huge pumpkin patch going, those things sell for an insane amount of money. CJ still hasn't come to my island, I have a ton of fish I'm holding onto to sell him. I have a pretty good idea at this point of where I want all of my houses/buildings/bridges/inclines to go. I already have a couple things that I'm going to need to adjust, which is annoying. I've already learned from my wife that you can't just simply move a house/building over a couple spots, you have to move it to a completely new area, THEN place it where you need it to go. I can't for the life of me get 8 items from a rock. I've done the thing where you dig holes to stop yourself from getting knocked back too far, then proceed to mash the crap out of the button, but the most I can ever get is 7.

Are you using a shovel? I can only get 7 with an axe, but I can get 8 every time with a shovel.

That explains it, I've been using an axe since pretty early on. I got used to using an axe because before I figured out the hole trick, I would sometimes accidentally dig a hole instead of hitting the rock.

I've noticed a cool little detail. I was decorating a room and noticed that a plant and a little flag that I placed on a table were both moving. It turns out that the AC unit that I placed on the wall was blowing on them! I moved the AC unit to the other side of the room and then the plant and flag stood still. I like the fact that they even bothered with such a small detail like that.

I'm pretty frustrated with this game right now. It's so annoying that you don't get the ability to alter land/water and create paths until so much later in the game. By then, you've built bridges and inclines, placed all of the stores and houses, planted flowers, built fences, etc. Now, I have to undo like 75% of my work just to use these new features, then re-do everything.

altering land/water an end-game thing.

Apart from adjusting some small pools of water I haven't done any land building/tearing down. I've spend a crap ton of time making wooden walkways though.

I wouldn't be so frustrated with it. I love my island's layout as it is. I don't have any need to reshape it.

Maybe you don't either?

Yeah, I was ok with leaving it the way it was. The only thing I did was to open a path to the beach where the fox appears. For nothing, because I never saw him again, and I stopped playing like a week after that.
