Might as well get it started. Who's looking forward to it? I personally think that it could beat PS5, that is if they don't screw up. They need a basic UI, more first party titles, and focus only on gaming. They own the license to Rare games, we need to see new Conkers, Perfect Dark, Banjo Kazooie, etc. They did alright with Killer Instinct, I'll give them that, but they're sitting on a lot of games that needs remade, remastered, and sequels.
As far as I know, it's slightly more powerful than the PS5, which isn't a big deal. But what is a big deal is that it will come with more storage. XBSX will have 1TB, which I admit, is not much by today's standards. The PS5 will have 825GB, which is ridiculous. I'm guessing that the next gen games will be around 100gb or more in size on average. If that is the case, I expect the discs will be on 4k UHD blu-rays.

@Anxiouz I got the complete Batman AK edition a few years back and can attest to most of the DLC being pretty good - playing as Bats friends was enjoyable. I actually uninstalled it before doing the 1 Batgirl one I think and have been meaning to reinstall to play that one. Easily worth $4, especially if you like the challenge maps or other side things like that. Nightwing, Harley and Robin's DLCs were enjoyable.

Yeah, purchased individually I think the DLC was like $40 or something which is crazy. But a couple more hours of gameplay for $4 is tough to beat, even if the individual pieces are short.

Halo Infinite MP is most good. Digging it so far. Feels like I'm 21 all over again back in H3. Still haven't found the grappling hook though. Kinda need it to feel like the Batman.

So I was kind of obsessing over trying to find a Halo Infinite Series X. I tried for months with no luck. Sony just happened to send me an invite to buy a PS5 from their store so I jumped on that because why not. The PS5 arrived today and I decide I would list it on OfferUp to see if someone would be interested in making a trade. I wasn't very hopeful as the prices on the Halo XSX were going for $900+ in my area. To my pleasant surprise I received an offer to make a straight up trade. What was even more surprising was the guy was willing to drive 2 hours each way to come and make the trade so I didn't have to leave my family. We made the trade and I'm now the proud owner of a Halo Infinite Series X!

Performance is similar to series S, correct? I had a series S for about 3 months and switched back to my 1x- honestly it feels just as good if not better. I'm not seeing huge load time disparities and the disc drive is a huge plus for me. I'm just bummed they'll be skipping it with upcoming releases- otherwise upgrade was too soon for me. I had a series X and gave it a family member for same reason- it's a beast but I wasn't getting enough out of it. I'll be looking for another this summer I hope.

ray tracing, more foliage, and 4K. Not a huge difference. But those things count in my book. So I wait. I've got tons of switch games on the backlog any way. But I might just load up Halo Infinite at some point if I get too impatient.

One X is actually better IMO. Better graphics card, actual 4K and higher resolution in pretty much every game.

The Series S doesn't really do anything better except load faster.

This is what I'm seeing personally. RE village loaded faster but looked a little "granier" imho. I used it as a test because it's been the title that PS4 pro to ps5 was really noticeable for me.

It really depend on what you're going for. Devs are just getting used to the new tools Microsoft created for the Series S|X. The load times are noticeably faster on the Series line vs the One line.

If you have a display that can do 120fps and want to take advantage of that, you'll want a Series S or X. If you want the best looking graphics, you can get by with a One X, but a Series X will be more future proof.

IMO FPS takes priority over Graphics in fast movement games like a shooter or racing, but Graphics takes priority over FPS in most other genres. If you're getting 60fps 4k, you're probably going to be happy with most games. The Series S is a great little console, but I wouldn't expect too much if you're hooking it up to a 4k TV. 1080p is the sweet spot for that guy.

The XSS is a fine system, but it's a Game Pass machine, pure and simple. If you have the $$ to only buy digital games, then you'll find a way to get an XSX with that money. And if you have a killer tv, you should know the XSS isn't the system to show it off.

My son doesn't really care if he's using an XSS or an X1X, although he does complain about how slow the X1X is to load some games. I eventually got rid of the XSS since I was buying older physical games for him. But for the past couple months he's only playing GP stuff with his friends so I'll prob get him back into an XSS.

Can you list a game that does 120fps on a series S but not on a One X?

Microsoft tried to push this narrative, but I haven't seen it perform above 60FPS in any game ever besides maybe Ori or another very simple 2D game. MCC does 60 FPS and that's not a hard game to run.

I think we all agree the Series X is the way to go, but I can't think of a single thing the Series S does better than the One X besides slightly faster load times. it runs the crappy One S versions of games whereas the One X runs the actual 4K versions. It just has a better GPU, period.

For me the Series S was cool because it's so tiny that it works really well as a travel machine. I can hook it up in my hotel in about 20 seconds and it powers on fast and I am ready to play or stream video. Hotel TVs usually suck anyways so I wasn't ever expecting 4K or 120hz. Just play some CoD Cold War Zombies or stream some netflix etc.

But for home usage I can't really see the upside honestly, even games like RDR1 look a lot better on the One X than Series S.

I was mostly jazzing on the Series S when pitted up against the Series X this week, but then I played Avengers and with them both set to performance, the Series S looked kinda gross.

For most of the Game Pass library it literally doesn't matter, even stuff like Mass Effect Trilogy runs at 1440p60. ...Course it runs at 1440p120hz on the Series X! I'm sure stuff like Halo Multiplayer, that sort of thing, you won't even notice. If you don't mind 1080p60 or 1440+30fps you probably won't really notice much at all period, but if you want frames AND resolution, you've gotta run Series X

Could be worse I guess. I'd definitely take a SS over SX tho, optical or not. It's juicier. Faster. You know what you can't buy back? Time.

Quite a few actually, although I can't imagine how low-res things are going to look on the XSS at 120fps. I'd argue that it's going to be rather rough looking.

Agreed, and I'm not sold on 120fps yet. It's more of a novelty to me since it always removes ray-tracing and visual fidelity. On XSX there's a noticeable downgrade when playing in 120fps except for things like Super Lucky Tales, the Falconeer, and Ori where the cartoony art style and camera position help their cause.

and there's a nice HD version of Max Payne 1 with modernized controls on PS4, i don't know if they put it on Xbox consoles yet.
I got it for $4 last week.

The Duke Nukem 3D developers had NOTHING to do with the Max Payne games. Remedy Entertainment developed Max Payne, 3D Realms developed Duke Nukem 3D.
Remedy's first game, Death Rally, was PUBLISHED by Apogee, who eventually became 3D Realms, but they had nothing to do with the game itself.

Final fired up the XSX. Quite a solid initial setup experience.

Coming from the dual shock, Xbox controller just feels so small. Also, why does the d pad sound like a mechanical keyboard? Holy hell is it loud!

Game Pass is disappointing, regret spending the money. The overall UI is definitely better than Xbox one days.

I dunno, hopefully more games make it worthwhile but I'm slightly regretting not selling the halo edition before opening.

Could be like me and outside of a few things on there, I've already played it or have little desire to. And some of the games on there can be had for cheap on PC or have been apart of multiple bundles, etc. I DO think GamePass has value, just not as much to me.

While I think Gamepass is GREAT, I did let mine expire. I just enjoy Switch and PS5 games more. If I didnt have either of the other 2 and started fresh Xbox with Gamepass would be the ticket. One thing I like about Gamepass is it seems to get all the indie games, that I was buying on Switch like Children of Morta, Hades, Dead Cells....I could have enjoyed Gamepass much more if I didnt buy near all those games on Switch. As for the 1st party stuff I just prefer the Sony stuff vs Xbox if I had to choose.
As for the 1st party stuff on Xbox I purchased the Ori's and Gears and Battletoads etc if I didnt that is even more value for Gamepass. Still they have Forza, Sea of Thevies, Flight Simulator, EA Play....

Overall quaility of the Systems I think the Xbox is better, time will tell. On the Controller isnt a comparison DS5 is next gen. As for my Xbox Controller (from a Series S) it seems to have sharp edges at the seams how is yours?

Agree with you @MrBean on the D-pad of the new Series controllers. I actually went back to my X1 Sports Red controller as I just like the feel of the X1 era controllers more and they added via firmware some of the small things that the XSX controllers have, so I'm not really missing out.

Interesting take on GP with expecting a larger library - there's over 200 games I think even before EAplay - but I guess like Groo said that if you already own a number of especially small to medium 'sized' indies elsewhere it might not be as good of a deal. I don't buy those style of games anymore largely due to giveaways on PC and GP. I've almost enjoyed GP for those smaller indies more than bigger games, as I'll seek to give them a shot and if I like them, finish them off pretty quickly and move on to the next game, which I might not stick with them as much if I didn't have that situation. But I get that approach and selection might not cut it for everyone.
I will point out that I am still riding on the 2.5+ years I got of GP by buying Live and then using the $1 conversion deal. I believe that'll end in Feb and I'm not 100% sure what I'm going to do. I might let GP lapse, look to buy another 2.5-3 years of Live and try the conversion deal again, but we'll see. I do like having a bunch of games to play, but with my XSX and before that my X1X as my primary gaming systems (no Switch, only got a PS4 around a year ago, no PS5) I need to decide if I want to take a break from GP and focus more on my owned titles on the platform, or keep GP and its access to a number of games that I still would like to give a go. Either way, but especially if I keep/renew GP, I've got almost too many games to even play.

I kinda hope GamePass doesn't normalize this whole "we won't have certain features at launch that have always been there (co-op, Slayers multiplayer? people are complaining about some multiplayer being missing), but will be added later" just cause most people are using GamePass and not actually buying products missing features that should be standard.

@groo nope. Licenses only last for so long on these games, so they get delisted after a few years. Only option is physical. The real bummer is that the only way you can get the DLC is by having a redeem code that is in circulation. I regret not getting the DLC when I could, but then again, I rarely play Forza Horizon. I just like to jump in from time to time to check out the visuals and physics. I'd probably play a lot more if I had a wheel and peddles.

In the past it's been both. Halo 3 for instance one person is arbiter one is master chief. Halo 4 you're both master chief and it plays as if you're both just one person but you both play if that makes sense.

It's not really as good as gears story wise for co-op incorporation but it's still fun

Exactly. I have no interest in Halo at all without couch co-op campaign. (Which is why I haven't played Halo since Halo 4.)

I'm very excited that this version will finally have couch co-op campaign again -- but I won't buy it until that exists.

Indeed! We'd have youth group Halo (2) parties. Two Xboxes playing 4-player split-screen each for 8-player games. It was amazing! Good times.

This was the best really. It was great to play a full co-op campaign when both were individual characters that mattered. My wife and I loved this. When we renewed our license plates that year, I got "JOHN 117" and she got "ARBIT3R". yes

I have Gears 4 and 5 literally still in the shrinkwrap waiting to be played. We really liked early Gears, but stopped playing it for some reason. I think they just didn't stand up to our favorite: Borderlands 2. (To be clear, Halo was clearly our favorite for a long time, until they stopped doing couch co-op.) We finished BL3 long ago, but still play it in the limited time we have to play these days. We're very anxiously awaiting Tiny Tina's Wonderslands next year! So excited!! :)

But, yes, as soon as we move on from BL3, it'll be Gears 4. yes

My bros and I enjoyed 3 player co-op on Gears 5. There were a few sections that just felt too long, but overall it was super fun. I think I skipped Gears 3 and 4 which made following the story less enjoyable as there were a lot of tie-ins.

@Scott original was decent, but I would argue that things improved in, at the very least, 2. 3 wasn't bad and was overall better vs. 1, if maybe not much better compared to 2. Judgement was meh and 4 wasn't a ton better, but I did enjoy 5. 5 starts and ends with 2 more linear sections, with 2 open-world larger areas in the middle 2 sections and that was a nice changeup. Having essentially 4 different sections was nice as they all looked and felt pretty distinct.

Agreed @Simon_Belmont. It's a great tech demo of what the engine is capable of. The visuals are solid, but it really showcases the draw distance, lighting and traffic controls. Should make modern world building so much easier. It'll be interesting to see if this helps speed up development of games or if devs use this to free up time to build even better stuff into the game with the same schedules they've been using.

I can see the lower costs even after the last 5 years. I mean the top of the line LG C1 was on sale for $1800 for the 65". I still am an OLED lover. But this QLED has really impressed me. I'm glad I don't have to chose. QLED for the living room, OLED for the bedroom.

I'm still stuck with my Xbox One. I am considering the Series X since 99% of my Xbox gaming is Game Pass and digital only games.

I'm currently playing through a few Game Pass games. It would be nice to have the suspend creature on the newer consoles instead of sitting through the loading screen every time. I've been playing Halo Infinite, The Gunk, Hades, and Xeno Crisis. I downloaded a few others that I just haven't gotten around to yet. I really want to start Psyconauts 2 soon and Bug Fables. I'll be honest, I've had pretty consistent issues with the Quick Resume feature. It's insanely amazing but sometimes I won't have sound, or will experience more bugs when using it. But when it works it's fantastic.

I still mostly just shut down games when I'm done. The load times on the XSX and XSS are pretty darn quick...it's nothing like the X1. But I agree that if you're still playing an X1 the XSS would be a great fit for you.

I don't think I ever had a suspend issue, but I'm playing mostly Game Pass games and I tend to not use Quick Resume because it caps download speeds.

Better than PS5 I guess, there you get the same thing as you had on PS4; video app can be suspended, game can be suspended, but just one and that's it.

Well I tried the xbox live gold to gamepass ultimate 1:1 conversion and it worked. I was nervous but I'm happy I did it now. I have the 1 month "trail" even though I've had the $1 trail 2 times before. Bought the code at best buy. Went to xbox store to redeem gold. Then went in to gamepass, selected a game, and selected activate ultimate. And it worked. 1 year 1 month for $60.

I'm pretty happy. I've got a new xbox series X. A bunch of games from black friday. And now, a whole year to play halo infinite, forza horizon 5, psychonauts 2, DiRT 5, control, the ascent, quantum break, and a few others. Worth the $60 for several games, and more to come in the next year!

120fps on XSX via FPS Boost is sooooooo smoooth. The graphics are ok, and don't really wow, but it plays so well and the gameplay hook/grind is perfect. I'm in love with this again. Unbelievable for this to get a free "upgrade" from 30fps to 120fps but man, it's fantastic!

Anyone know -- if I own two Xboxes and want to play something with my wife (i.e. each on one Xbox) in campaign co-op mode -- do I have to buy two copies of the game? Or can I be logged into BOTH consoles?

In other words... Borderlands 3 has some issues still with couch co-op. Split-screen still has issues after 2+ years. So, we're thinking of using my Xbox One (which I just replaced with an XSX) on another TV and then doing non-split-screen co-op by using two consoles. Can I do this having just purchased ONE copy of BL3 by logging into my Xbox Live account on both consoles?

And, now that I think about it, would I need to do paid Xbox Live for this to work?? Even though it is "local/LAN" play? They don't have the System Link option any more, right?

Just seems stupid I might have to buy a game twice and pay for two Xbox Live subscriptions just because BL3 has sucky split-screen!?

If it's a digital game then here's what my son and I have done (in the same house):

- His console is set as the "home console" so that my account (with GamePass Ultimate) and games can be used/are on there and he can play everything with his account/user.
- I login to my console with my account.

I think MS has gone away from LAN gaming, or only specific games can do it. It's either couch co-op on the same console, or it's over Live since that's required for online multiplayer.

No I just have my one subscription and everything seems to work fine. No old school LAN needed

Haha man, it's been ages since I've been competitive online. Halo is reminding me how God awful it is to play with PUGs. It's like everyone just becomes instantly an idiot.

There needs to be way more maps. This selection is rough. Bring back some old school 1/2 maps.

Got my Series X in on Christmas Eve and it's great. The quick resume feature is awesome and the graphical upgrade over my One X is way better than I anticipated. Halo Infinite runs and looks great and can't wait to play some of the other optimized games afterwards. I usually don't buy consoles this early on, but I'm really glad I did.

I think it is. I started playing Infinite on my One X and thought it looked great, but it looks even better on the Series X. I do think it plays a bit smoother on Series X because I'd get some lag in some of the bigger group battles on the One X.

There's a FTP game called VIGOR that looks FANTASTIC on my X. It's a little PUBG, with Stalker, Hitman and mild Warzone elements thrown in.
If you're a Game Pass member with perks, you get a nice starter pack. I haven't been playing the main game, i've been playing the side shootout mode.
Even though it's 3rd person, i like the option to aim down the sights in first person. The graphics for my X optimized COD Vanguard somehow look worse than my normal Xbox One COD Cold War graphics.
It's very strange.

The Aliens game on Game Pass is mildly entertaining, glad i didn't buy it, wish it wasn't third person. Otherwise pretty solid for that type of game. I like it 100 times better than Back 4 Blood.

Oh yeah, I've had multiple issues. Several times now I've had to force quit as it told me I didn't own the campaign. My shield wall has failed to deploy multiple times. Random deaths that didn't make sense. Given the sheer size of the game and amount of moving pieces, it's relatively well polished. Safe to assume they'll be bug fixing pretty soon now that everyone is playing.

Hey, here's a question someone might be able to help with. We have a PC and an Xbox One X, my profile has Game Pass Ultimate, my sons profile is a sub account but has the same access to all of the games that I have through Game Pass of course. We own Marvel Avengers on Xbox (through a digital copy), and I installed it on my PC through Game Pass. When my son gets on his profile on Xbox, and I get on my profile on PC, it boots him off and says "(main account) is playing this on another device", then if he tries to sign back in on his profile on Xbox, and start the game, it boots me off on the PC, and vice versa. It doesn't let me play on my Microsoft Profile on PC, and him on his profile on Xbox at the same time. Does he need his own Xbox Live account or something? I assumed since we own it on Xbox digitally, it wouldn't be a Game Pass problem.

Edit: Oh, probably can't play PC + Xbox, that must be it?

Double edit: Nope, according to Google i should be able to play on a PC and one of us on the Xbox together.

I think you're caught up in the middle of the "home console" quandary. I don't how this works with PC + Xbox, but when my son and I need to play something together (on 2 Xboxes), what you're describing caused us all kinds of problems until I did this:

1 - On my son's X1X I have both of our Xbox accounts on it. The key piece to allow the account owner's content to be used by other profiles is to set this device as the "home/primary console". Since it's primary, and my account is on it, any other accounts can access/use GP, Xbox Live, and games that I own. My account should not be actively logged in here.

2 - On my XSX I have just my account but since it's me I can use and play all my stuff like normal. This is not the "home console" even though it's our main gaming unit. So by default my auto-downloads from the Xbox store get sent to his X1X. That's the only real downside.

I forget where you set this...I think on the Xbox itself or else somewhere in https://account.microsoft.com/devices .

Hmmm appreciate the info. The Xbox is setup with me as the primary account and it should be the Home Console as we just got a PC this past summer, but i'll try playing around with that at home and see if i can resolve it. We've played other games together so I didn't think it was going to be too difficult, it's the first time we've had that issue that i can recall.

That's quite an undertaking to play them all and may burn you out. You could just watch some recap videos? That's what I did, hell if I remember most of the story.

If I could only recommend one game on Game Pass, it would probably be A Plague Tale Innocence. It's really unique and surprisingly well done. If you don't mind walking sims, What Remains of Edith Finch is fantastic as well. (It's dark and stays with you.)

I didn't care for Plague Tale, but can see how others might. What Remains of Edith Finch was enjoyable. I'm looking forward to playing Record of Lodoss War that recently came. But as for more suggestions, would want to know preferred genres before suggesting too much. I don't know about best games, but here are some that I recommend:

- Slay the Spire (you'll probably enjoy this if you like Monster Train)
- Hades (probably the best rouge lite I've played)
- Hollow Knight (great but tough metroidvania)
- Superhot: Mind Control Delete
- Tetris Effect (play with good headphones or sound system)
- Superliminal (really interesting take on a puzzler)
- New Super Lucky's Tales (great little platformer)

Also, with EA Play

- Titanfall 2
- Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order
- Unravel & Unravel Two

If you've got some friends to play with:

- Sea of Thieves (it's just fun to be a pirate on the open seas and the Pirate's Life quest line is great)

Thank you for the suggestions! Slay the Spire is one of my favorite games of all time, and I love Hades (played both of these on Nintendo Switch )

Hollow Knight is a bit too tough for my taste, but I do like metroidvania games. Looking forward to playing Ori.

The Titanfall campaign was terrific, and Fallen Order is great.

From what I understand. Is if the Xbox case says Xbox One/Series X, then it's the Xbox one version on disc and u download the Series X version. But if the case only says Series X on it, then it's that version on the disc

I just think Microsoft was ahead of the times during the Xbox one launch. They knew that a streaming and always online world was coming. They were just a little early to the party. Imo digital is the way everything will end up. Movies, tv,music are all basically only streaming or downloads nowadays. Plus all digital will help the earth. Look at how much waste goes into manufacturing the cases, disc, artwork, the pollution that accures before, during and after the processes that happens to get that physical game or movie into ur home. Digital is just so easy. As long as Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony figure out a way to guarantee that people will never lose access to ur digital library. I gotta stop buying games from the eShop, bc I don't trust Nintendo enough to let me keep access to my games for many years. They like to make people keep rebuying the same games every generation or two. I have more trust in Microsoft at this point over any other company to do what they can to let me keep access to my purchased games forever. Not sure about Sony yet, depends on if the next playstation will be backwards compatible.

Tldr
Xbox was ahead of the times at xbone launch. Digital is the future and everyone will be better off when all the big companies figure out a way to always keep access to digital games.

They said it's coming to game pass but with a separate subscription fee. The way I understand it is you need game pass to have access to it. I could be completely wrong. Either way, it's a nice service to have on Xbox, especially for Series S people (I just bought one on here). I don't think they officially announced the price, but I'm guessing it will be $15/month.

EA has seen a lot of profitability from their games I think from having their Play on GPU though. It's a great promotion and Microsoft is paying EA some dividends to have their games on GPU. Their pockets run deep. I'm sure if they wanted to they could easily finance Ubi+ on GPU. I think in time they will. Monopoly is just a game. They're trying to dominate the fudging Netflix of gaming world.

EA was kinda in a situation where they got figured out- same series every year, became a niche competition based group of games and needed sales. FPS series are headed same way. Casuals aren't liking it anymore so they need to get it out there. In a way the competitive gaming sphere is making lots of crap casual experiences that we just won't buy.

Yeah true. Ubi I think is headed there too soon since they're pivoting more towards these live service "self sustaining" Samey annual games or add on DLC like AC with tons of nonsense grindy busy work. I know I won't be paying extra for this Ubi+ service. I'm happy with my GPU sub which is killing it monthly for me. I give it about 6 months before MS says to Ubi here's a blank check. Write down any amount on there and we will pay it to have Ubi+ on GPU.

Agree with @TalonJedi87 that GPU is awesome for me. I comprised a list this morning of how many GP titles I've beat in the past 2+ years and it's a lot, nearing 30 I think. I had considered letting it lapse but I'm really thinking I want to retry the 3 year dollar deal after I expire next month.
Beating that many is great, but I also know I got to try out a good dozen or more as well that I either didn't like and trying via GP saved me from possibly buying it. Or I wasn't crazy about it and then got the game for free on some other platform like the Epic store so I can try to play it later. It's been a solid service for me. EAplay is a nice addition but I think I've only beat like 3 titles and played a few others as well.

It's actually 43... with 2 of them being EAplay titles.
And my dozen tried estimate is laughably low, it's got to be 3x that many, or more.

In general I think that's right. But for more recent games, if it'll fit I think they are sometimes including both the X1 and XSX bundles on the disc. I forget the game but it didn't have an update and from the disc we installed it on both our X1X and XSX.

If the case only shows XSX and doesn't also say X1, then that's a current-gen game only (like The Medium) and won't run on older systems.

So I realized something about my Xbox One. I never once used the disk drive in the years I've owned it. When Gamestop offered $220 in trade-in value for the Xbox One S recently, I went ahead and traded it in and upgraded to the $299 Xbox Series S. I'll probably trade that in in a year or so when the Series X is easier to find and there's a trade-in deal again.

I was always more of a Playstation fan than an Xbox fan, but I'm getting tired of rebuying digital games from Sony. I like how MSN doesn't make you rebuy old games. Sony needs to get with the program, as does Nintendo. I buy a lot of Nintendo games in digital form because I have a Switch and my daughter has two (one at my house and one at her Mom's house). I bought so much digital content on the Wii and Wii U...would be nice if Nintendo ported that stuff to their new systems.

Agreed. There is no valid excuse for the digital games owned on a previous system to not be available on the next system as long as the new system can run the old hardware.

I had a question regarding Game Pass that I was hoping someone on here might know. If you have Game Pass and attack on moor months of Game Pass Ultimate, does the regular Game Pass upgrade? I know if you have Gold, the remaining time will convert to Ultimate. I have 2 more months of regular Game Pass, but I am going to get Ultimate in the future to have access to EA Play and Gold. If I upgrade now, will I get the extra features?

While I'm glad when a system offers backwards compatibility, I know how challenging it is to make new hardware that uses different architecture emulate old architecture. Microsoft has had DirectX as the main API for every generation, which just makes things simpler for them.

Sony built the PS2 with special CPU (Emotion Engine), which they added in early PS3s to provide back compatibility, but they ultimately removed it. The PS3 had a custom Cell processor, which Sony basically had to create a farm of PS3s to make PS3 games availability on PSNow.

Nintendo's greatest console for back compatability was the Wii U, with support for Gamecube, Wii, and Wii U games along with a somewhat decent emulator for virtual console games. But Nintendo knows people will keep buying the same game over and over, so they have no reason to focus on backwards compatability. The NSO and expansion pass are basically a way to get people to keep paying for games they bought in the past.

I haven't done GP to GPU but when you apply the GPU code it'll move you to that tier immediately. What normally happens is your existing subscription(s) will convert to GPU. So if you have 2 months of GP that might covert down to 5-6 weeks of GPU.

If you enter EA Play or Gold codes, they all convert into GPU and it's not 1:1.

Nobody is forcing you to get rid of your old systems. Since every Xbox 360 games isn't backwards compatible on the X1|S|X or XSX/S, there is most likely a reason. Could be technical, could be financial, could be legal. Whatever it is nobody promised you your digital game would work on hardware that didn't exist at the time you purchased it. The way I see it, the only "no brainer" here is that you need to read the Terms and Conditions of these digital shops and prepare accordingly. Anything these companies do to bring your catalog over to newer hardware is just them trying to get you to switch over.

As for MS, it's clear that their vision is cloud gaming. It will be much cheaper for them to support than dealing with new hardware revisions, it will make new games more accessible to more people, and it will make revenue predictions much easier. Microsoft making older titles available on current hardware is just a way for them to pad their library seeing as they have the fewest amount of exclusives of the big three.

Yeah I have a closet full of old systems. I mean specifically if I own a PHYSICAL disc that is COMPATIBLE with current gen digital systems there should be a way to play it without paying again. Yes it is something a brainless slug would expect imho. Even dvd / Blu-ray physical has accepted that this is a problem but their answer was to cash in. You play stupid games ....

I'm aiming this idea at any company that has a box that does not have a physical drive. Not really caring what their MO or vision of the future is.

Bluntly- this is why we get crap like this. We pay for it and lineup behind it like it's perfectly ok. Heaping praise on fully digital rental boxes and paid services like peons- we win stupid prizes.

For the last 12 months anyway to play current gen systems has been a problem- except series S. Physically- difficult. They gave us a way to buy their service. And we ate it up. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I also feel like todays gamers are ok with stuff like this because- let's be honest here- they play a handful of games constantly for years. Destiny, mmos, Fortnite, etc etc. The industry is currently driven by games that are designed to be obsessively played- not by diversity and owning a library. It's becoming more and more clear by sales that this is true. In China- mobile gaming- almost addiction like crap- drives the industry. We're being pushed into this I fear.

On the contrary...in also an older gamer they plays lots of different games, and I have a huge library of old games they mostly sit on my shelf and collect dust. With Game Pass, I have really gotten my money's worth. I get to try out tons of games that I otherwise probably wouldn't have, and I can skip back and forth playing tons of games without having to get up off my ass. If I'm not having fun...no big deal, just move onto another game. I was hesitant to buy Hades because $25 for a digital game is a big pill to swallow if I'm not sure if I'm going to like it (and I don't really like rogue-lites). Thanks to Game Pass, I was able to check it out, and now I'm hooked.

I normally wouldn't have bought Mortal Kombat 11 or Forza Horizon 5 or Dirt, but I'm really enjoying them. Throw Halo Infinite into the mix, and there are dozens of games that I still want to try. I'll still buy the games I want on Switch and PS, but I'm fine with an all digital option for Xbox.

@Feeb you talk like you represent the masses and have some type of entitlement to direct what companies should make and how they should price things, so I wouldn't call your opinion humble. You can argue all you want, but it actually is "perfectly ok". The Series S was made for one purpose, to make an affordable device that will sway people into the Xbox ecosystem. It's a brilliant move. It's not being marketed as a replacement for your previous Xbox consoles with disc drives. Sony did something similar, but they decided to keep the specs the same and charge a bit more.

As for "today's gamers", I'm not sure who you are referring to. There are billions of people playing video games today in all kinds of ways. Just because you hold on to a library of physical titles from previous gen systems doesn't mean you are better than anyone else out there that plays games or that you even represent any significant portion of the population. I've been playing games for 35 years, owned dozens of consoles/handhelds/pcs, and know a ton of people that play games in all different kinds of ways. All the games you listed as examples are social based games, allowing people to connect online through gaming. It's only fitting for these games to stay relevant for much longer than say a long single-player linear game that doesn't offer more to do once the game is finished.

The way I see it, people that want to play games today have so many great options out there and that there is something for everyone. I don't fault any of the big companies for developing hardware or games to ensure that they have a healthy revenue stream. They're a business employing thousands of people, not some altruistic non-profit out there to make sure you feel good about everything in the world. If you don't like it, don't buy it. If you want something to change, stop harping on an internet forum and go and start a company where you can control the ideals and build your dream system out there that you'll make sure that in 30 years, someone will be able to play a game that was made today because they have a physical disc that may still be in decent enough condition that it can be read in an optical drive (that is if optical drives are still being manufactured 30 years from now).

All your points are 100 % valid and correct. As I tried to make clear- this is a business and they're making business decisions that I don't agree with. So correct, I cannot speak for the industry or masses. What I was trying to construe Is that I ( mostly being our generation) am NOT the industry anymore. Mostly I hate the road it is going down, addictive games with in game transactions etc- this is not my opinion it is a fact. Look at the Chinese game market - companies have found that those cheap to develop types of games ARE the driving force. If they do as you're suggesting, as a business and follow the money- as I think we all expect- that's the future of the industry. I've no problem with the sub services, I don't use them if possible and I share my thoughts on full digital already- but this is how things change/ incrementally- get offered something that could be much better and be ok with it. People like me starting a new company isn't the answer- the answer is all of us demanding obvious things like BC , disc to digital, a real choice by actually supplying disc based systems over a year into the cycle etc and not pretending like what we have is perfectly fine.

I'm not going to be a big douche and suggest that you get a new career as an industry shill over this. I can be passionate and not be mad🤷🏻‍♂️

I have a disc in one room and digital in another- same box, no drive and hundreds of physical games I own that are limited to one of them. Finally playing Alan Wake (remastered), and I'm not overly impressed. The story is kinda confusing, the game play is rough, the combat is pretty generic and boring, the acting is awful, the atmosphere is cool, but also blan and repetitive at times.

I think it's more the story and over the top reactions that are just annoying. Alan is kind of a dick with oddly harsh and reactive comments. The FBI agent just randomly shoots without any real dialogue, while Alan taps into the Matrix and uses bullet time to avoid Agent Smiths amazing shooting abilities. The wife being kidnapped sure doesn't seem like she's worried.

The story at its core is awesome but the execution is just odd and feels off. I do want to know how this unfolds and ends but so many annoyance. Tiny ass town has a helicopter and this many cops? How did these cop cars drive so far off trail? How many times can you lose your gear and conviniently refind at the most appropriate times? Random generators everywhere that still work. Also why is some of the voice acting volume so crapty? No consistency. Without subtitles I'd miss a bunch of what they've said.

This needed more than a graphics update. It was definitely better in its time, but it wasn't that long ago. Overall it's just ok at best. I find myself not overly engaged and wanting to finish. Give it another chapter or so... We'll see.

This was one of the key features I was excited about and love in practice as well. My wife like to play a goofy match-3 style game dating back to my X1 and with Quick Resume neither of us have to deal with longer boot ups as often anymore. I also really like being able to go back to games like Horizon 5 (used to be 4), or some fighting games and mess around for a short while if I don't have a bunch of time to play longer, great feature.

Starfield comes out this year. Guaranteed. They gave a date for it. And Bethesda does not delay games after a date is set. Its never happened. Not once. They don't announce dates until pretty late into the dev cycle. And they also don't give a fudge if a game launches broken. They've never missed a date they've given for a game.

@Archer that's one opinion. On the other hand, MS & Activision/Blizzard could have good faith agreements in place that will allow them to introduce Activision/Blizzard owned titles to GP. I'm sure there are teams of people reading through contracts on already released titles that were available on any gen Xbox and PC to see what can be made available with little to no financial obligations to third parties. I suspect that there will be an announcement by June on titles that would be available on GamePass. It's possible that they also announce a slight increase in price on the subscription if they don't feel that the add-on/microtransaction revenue is enough to keep the margins where they want them.

Anxiouz

It's about a year out but based on comments it sure sounds like COD is going to hit GP. The question is more about when the Activision/Blizzard titles will no longer be available on PS5.

Sony/Nintendo make their money off selling software, MS is betting big on a new approach: the subscription model. I don't know how they make that work but they now have 25M subscribers. Ignoring that people use codes and exploits to get more/free time, thats roughly 25M x $10 a month = $250M a month. Or $3B a year.

I for one won't have any issue at all paying $20-$25 a month for GP if the quality and volume of titles increases like it will with Bethesda and Activision/Blizzard. I'm paying about that for Netflix and Hulu each, and GP is saving me a helluva lot more money than those other services.

Everyone is now chasing the reoccurring revenue model as it's clearly working with our modern age. Very few companies aren't actively trying to build this model. Microsoft is clearly leading the pack here on the gaming front, and I'm amazed the other two haven't caught up yet. Xbox ranks 3rd for me of the three systems; however, I think they have the better business model and future with what they're doing. Good chance Sony will catch up and as usual, Nintendo won't do anything --- and they have one of the best possible libraries to truly capture market share on this.

Also, I can't see a world in which MSFT turns COD into an exclusive game, there's too big of a market out there. By going exclusive, forcing others to buy Microsoft platforms, they may push those customers away. Still, on the same hand, it truly could attract them and get them to buy into their ecosystem. Random example that comes to mind is Stern going to Sirius. Massive explosion in subscribers as people will follow the content.

This is a big move, super curious to see how it plays out.

Definitely a big gamble on CoD on many fronts. Popularity, decreased quality, huge numbers on ps boxes, ps folks are loyal etc. Also the fact that Sony picked up lots of the talent involved in CoD as well. It's the only IP in the package that could literally make or break it. They already broke most of their other games.

Also there was a good point made here earlier- MS has got to start capturing the MSRP for their service. The loss they're likely taking on sub fee workarounds is substantial. That will be reflected in everyone's cost. Their strategy is to capture customers first but springing higher fees will likely happen.

I can see them saying some corpo nonsense like "Activision games will be available on all platforms where Game Pass is accessible". Forcing Sony to become reluctant to have the Game Pass app incorporated onto the PS Store.

I agree. I think this is what they've been pushing for. I think the next move is lay it out and create the PS app then have talks- no go - make it public that it exists. That's putting the ball in Sony's court. So much still to hash out. I'll be honest- if an app with Xbox games existed with trophy support- huge- I'm in 100% They need to make it happen.

I mean you can play Game Pass pretty much anywhere now with cloud gaming. On phones. On tablets. Heck even in Teslas

Cloud gaming is ok, but even with MS behind it the lag for FPS's kind of suck. For me the point of Gamepass is the ability to download and play local. Cloud gaming is really just a feature that while there is something that might get used to show someone but then kind of forget about it. I think it is only a matter of time before there is a PS App or even a Nintendo App. Nintendo and Sony will probably end up getting a cut of the revenue all be it small.

I'm all for Microsoft doing better so there's more competition in the marketplace, but buying up existing publishers with long-running titles and making them exclusive is the worst. First Starfield (which I had been looking forward to for some time now) and now probably both Elder Scrolls VI and Diablo IV (from two of my favorite franchises). Don't get me wrong. I'm still going to play them. I'm just annoyed that I have to play them on a platform I prefer less when they would have otherwise been multi-platform titles. At least Game Pass takes some of the sting out of it.

I like the Xbox Series X controllers so much, it makes me want to buy different colors, kind of like joycons. With these at least they are official special editions. I bought both of these.

I have two of that Forza controller brand new in the box... I meant to sell them off, but didn't get around to it. Dunno if they still have high value like they did for a while...

The $200 one? Thing looks sexy, but man $200 for a controller

If they are smart, and they've made some smart moves. COD will be multiplat, and they'll revive some oldies and put legit resources into them. And pluck a few key franchises as xbox exclusive. Crash and Spyro would be good for that.

As an "older" psx guy- lol @ crash and Spyro. I wanted FFVII and SotN. Not to be a douche- I am- but take that crap and go.

Sounds like you're not a fan of platformers that might be geared towards a broader audience @feeb. That's fine. There's a ton of people that are fans and they wouldn't consider either of these series "crap".

So this is just a general Halo question....

I loved playing the original Halo (or Halo 2) back in high school, but literally only ever played multiplayer.

My question is, are the actual stories in the Halo games worth going back and playing the single player campaigns for? Or, what is the most story-driven Halo game that I should check out?

I here the single player story is pretty good in infinite.. the multiplayer however has been turning some people off. I fee Halo fanatic friends are done with multi right now until it's fixed. Hackers are ruining the game and the bugs/glitches are not helping mutch. I am still trying to work through Halo 2 and up's story before I dig into infinite. Can't wait thoug, even though I am forcing myself to.

I've struggled with all of the stories in the Halo campaigns. I'm into it for a bit and then lose the plot at some point and never fully get back on track. You're always searching and chasing after someone or something. So to me, no, it's not worth playing the campaigns for some ultra-rewarding story line. I'd prob just recommend some youtube recap. Gameplay-wise they're fun and worth your time, but I personally enjoyed Infinite probably the most. The grapple really made it enjoyable.

I typically don't care about the story in most video games. But I've always enjoyed the story in Halo campaigns. They actually keep me interested all the way through, and don't come off corny or lame at all.

I've played through Halo 1. Multiple times. The story is cool because of the damn near end campaign twist. Just not my thing but worth seeing.

Works for me. We've got Wonderlands coming in March and we'll be playing that for a while co-op. By the time we're done with that -- maybe Halo co-op will be ready...

(Or, maybe we'll get lucky and get Borderlands 4 sooner instead of later!) A man can dream! smile

FYI some noteworthy GP games are leaving shortly - I believe on/around the 15th:
The Medium
Control
The Falconeer
Code Vein
Project Winter
FF XII Zodiac Age

I started up The Medium last night b/c I don't want to miss out on it and it's not overly long at around 8+ hrs. Was alright across my 3 hr session, but it's pretty slow paced.

The Falconeer is cool but man do I struggle with the combat. I think it's mostly camera related but I'm terrible at it.

Don't bother with The Medium. There's nothing special or unique there (even the 2-screen thing) and it's a slog even when trying to speed walk-very-very-slowly though it.

These limited game companies have shown you can take money for a game and deliver it much later- VG consumers have become so lackadaisical- easy sell. They just shrug it off and defend the silly crap. Preorders for decades show they will too. Why not just take their money and use it to actually make the game... that they thought they were buying.

I think they were told to pivot more to the LIVE SERVICE portion of Halo to not leave enough time for coop. Would make sense in this current climate. Sad but true.

To be fair, they haven't officially delayed anything with this announcement other than the announcement that they were planning on sharing about when season 2 and 3 would be releasing. 343 knows that the money and replay value is in the PVP, so they are focusing on that. I get it. I'd prefer the campaign co-op first, but I get why that's not going to happen.
