Three Silent Hill games, Silent Hill movie, Resident Evil 4 remake, Callisto Protocol, Alan Wake 2, Dead Space remake... Wonder what triggered this new life into the genre? Odd that we're getting so much at the same time.

When do we get a new Alone in the Dark?

My problem being I am absolutely tired to death of remakes. I think there was pretty good justification for remaking games like RE 1 and 2, that were extremely aged and benefitted from some serious overhauling, but imo, RE 4, Dead Space, and SH2 are all games that are perfect or almost perfect as they are and there's no real gain in making them all over again. I really wish we could get some original projects for these IPs, especially since Dead Space 3 was a giant jar of poop juice. I also saw the upcoming remake trailers for RE and SH and I'm not a fan of the tonal shifts and the aesthetic changes that were made for seemingly no reason. That being said, I think some of the graphical improvements and the gameplay changes look impressive,

I don't really care enough personally to play the remakes (I've already played the originals, so I don't see the point), but I'm happy for people who are excited for them and I'm sure they'll be fun to play. Meanwhile here I am in 2022 playing thru the original Dead Space again and thinking to myself, "I don't know how you could improve on this". But for me, considering that if the SH2 remake and RE 4 remake do well that could mean more original titles, I'd be onboard.

No clue honestly as I’m not a huge fan generally but i feel like ive come across a lot of survival horror games in the last few years, maybe more indie titles though. And VR and multiplayer only type stuff

Really excited for Dead Space remake. Dead Space is probably the series I find myself most reminiscing about or wishing I could go back and play again.

Very interested to see what they do with Calisto Protocol.

@BioHazardMan - largely I agree, similar to Last of Us. Yet, for me, it's a reason to go back and replay it. Graphically, they're all quite good, but clearly, they're making them even better. Doesn't justify the price tag, obviously it's a cash grab, but to me, it's a push to go back and play a game I really loved. I'm not gonna break out old systems to go play Dead Space or Resident Evil 4 ... give me a slightly updated version to play on modern platforms? I'm in!

Still, wish they'd focus efforts on older games for remakes/remasters/reboots, whatever ... Yet, Dead Space / RE4 - I'm pretty stoked for.

Did I miss a remake of the first Silent Hill, or are they just going directly to SH2 because that's the one most fans seem to like the most?

I like that Capcom has been remaking the Resident Evil games in order so it's easy for newcomers to just jump right in and follow along, though I suspect after RE4 they wouldn't bother doing RE5 and RE6 (they each sold really well, but a lot of the fan base seems divided on whether or not they like them) and will just go straight for Code Veronica.

@PizzaTheHutt I suppose you COULD say they remade Silent Hill 1 since they released "Shattered Memories" back in 2009-2010, but even having played that myself I wouldn't call it a proper remake/reboot of the original since it's pretty dramatically different from other titles in the franchise despite being a retelling of the story of the first game. As a big SH fan I really would have preferred a remake of the original since the jump from PS1 game would be significantly more drastic than remaking SH 2 which in my opinion wouldn't benefit nearly as much as the original could from having a modern remake. That being said, it seems like SH 2 is really the game that draws the MOST ATTENTION for general gaming audiences and is usually considered the best, so I guess it makes sense business wise to go with the second entry.

That's a bummer. I would love a CV remake. But honestly after 4, I hope Capcom gives Resident Evil a break. I would love for them to go back and remake/reboot Dino Crisis. I know it doesn't have the commercial appeal that Resident Evil does, but I bet it'd sell well if done properly.

Silent Hill 2 was a masterpiece. I am glad it's the one they are remastering. In case you didn't play I will put into spoilers about the ending

So I know there was multiple endings but it was VERY FUDGING DEPRESSING to fight so hard just for my character to suicide at the end. What the hell

Still would replay 10/10

RE4 is great too but for me didn't seem like a Resident Evil game, probably due to it mostly being cult members. But I will be getting that also.

Rebranding topic to RE4 since I don't see anyone talking about it.

Holy crap this game is fantastic! By far the best of the remakes, but 4 always was the best of the series. I just don't remember it being this big!

I'm amazed at how little I remember from the original. Yet the additions to the game and QoL upgrades, are very awesome. The charms and attache modifications, do make it a bit easy. I can see where these would better balance out hardcore, but in standard ... upgrades and excessive ammo just feel way too easy at this point.

If you haven't yet started, I highly recommend playing on hardcore. Standard has some challenge, but honestly, it's a bit too easy. I am maxed out on inventory at this point!

I'm so sad that I think I'm nearly done (nearing end of Chapter 12). Really debating a second playthrough. How the hell are you supposed to finish this in 5.5 hours? I'm already rolling in like 22 hours!

Any idea if this remake has the adaptive difficulty of the original RE4? The game would make enemies be smarter or dumber just depending on how well (or not) you were playing. I thought that was cool and I wish more games did that.

Hrm, not sure, don't think so. Although once you get in your groove mixing up a couple shots with melee, all fights (regular enemies) are pretty rinse and repeat.

I've got pistol, and bolt thrower maxed out. Two upgrades left on shotgun, and a sniper/magnum with a handful of upgrades. They throw silly amount of money at you in this game (using the gold attache).

Said screw it, bought the rocket launcher (with the 20% off charm). Just one shotted Salazar, that little crap. I have ample ammo to take him out but the RL just seemed like the way he was meant to die.

Random. The rolls are pre-defined (meaning if you reload a save, same stuff). I always save and experiment with all combos (3x silver, 3x gold, and obviously the other combos). Get a rare or so, then wait till next range. I've gotten two epics too (Ashley for 50% herb bonus, and the 50% melee crit bonus).

All primary weapons (sentintiel 9, skull crusher, stingray, bolt Thrower, broken butterfly, krauser knife) maxed, nearing end of Ch 15.

Bolt Thrower is the clear star of the game. Keep your distance, melee when needed (epic charm for bonus melee is clutch), and you'll have ample ammo and health.

28 hours in! Jesus. Pretty sure it includes my many reloads though. I've had to revert to old saves several times due to missed treasure. And, I'm icrazy, and redo heavy density areas to maximize item usage. I also really struggled on the regenerators and not wasting ammo, so many reloads.

The auto save is a blessing and a curse. I'd rather it not be so easy for a mulligan vs force you to move on. Just like how they force you not to horde stuff in your chest.

While I don't think it dynamically adjusts difficulty, it does seem to punish you. In that, reloading, especially multiple times, seems to result in more head monster... Things. May be random (like loot) but seems more often than not, a reload (or several) results in more squid heads.

Haven't looked at trophies, clearly not gonna get them all. I'm annoyed with some of the shooting ranges. I've got all S's minus 2 or 3 A's that are just a pain in the ass. I question if it's worth it. I want the speed charm, but doubt I'll grt it this round.

Anyway, what a fantastic game. So impressed with it overall. Amazing how little I remember from the original, but that was during peak WoW days!

If you don't want to S+ from New Games you can easily get Ashley's armor and infinite rocket launcher. Beating minimilist, no healing is easy as well. Unsure how you found enough inventory space for all those weapons. You can spend spinels on gold tokens for the shooting range charms and the bonuses while useful aren't needed. I found the Red 9 to be the star for me. 4 Damage with exclusive upgrade which is higher then the Black Tail. Striker is the better shotgun due to damage and other stats. I think the issue with your weapon build is you stuck with the base weapons which aren't bad but easily get out classed by later weapons. I feel like your build really handicapped your options.

Plenty of space!

I dunno how you're thinking this is handicapped? Note that two of the weapons are exclusive DLC.

- Sentinel 9 is amazing for a clip with 31 rounds and beyond incredible in a big frenzy fight, not to mention laser sight + 5x crit exclusive (head pops are so fun).
- Skull Crusher is aboslutely the best shotgun because of the T2 reload! It's way too cool to pass up, and it hits like a truck. Not to mention the 2x damage on exclusive. Sure, clip is smaller, but I've never found that to be an issue as I only pull out the shotgun for a shot or two anyway. Bolt + Pistol do most of the work with Shotgun as failsafe/shields/big fudgeers.
- Stingray is fast shooting and takes out most in one shot. Not as strong as the starting rifle, but 1 shot = 1 shot, dunno why you'd need stronger. I prefer the speed (especially for regenerators, screw those guys).
- Broken Butterfly is the strongest weapon in the game (sans RPG) and downs anything (including bosses) insanely quick. May not have the accuracy, but ... don't miss smile.
- Bolt Thrower is, well, unlimited ammo and fully upgraded, incredible to conserve your other ammo.

Personally, I wouldn't change a thing. I've played with the other weapons, and between power, utility, and cool factor ... I love these weapons!

The only thing that would be nice, is the penetration of the Punisher, but the clip and crit on S9 are better IMHO.

Now in hardcore ... sure, I may need to change things up slightly, probably more on Pistol than anything for more sustained damage vs. luck of crits. So Red 9 is probably the choice, but no laser?! I mean, c'mon, the laser is too cool and is fantastic for some long distance quick snipping!

Matilda is the star for me. Always has been since the OG, but it does burn ammo. In NG+, best to leave the stock off except for boss fights (El Gigante, Village Chief, et al) and you can conserve ammo for when it's needed. The Ammo crafting charm helps (the one you get from the preorder bonus stuff). Sadly, I don't think the Gold Case makes much difference in the drop rate of PSTA's in the early game. I managed to get the Rhino Beetle charm, which has been a godsend in NG+, since with max health the R+G+Y healing items are worth a cool 20k each on Standard difficulty.

Wasn't sure where to dump this... But just found out about Resident Evil 1.5 on a local FB group as a dude got a repro PS1 disc.

This is pretty interesting and really awesome that it happened. Need to watch a playthrough.

No one going to talk about System Shock Remake. Hopefully Alone in the Dark is good. Passing on Alan Wake 2 till it is super cheap.

I just started REmake 4. I remember buying the original on Gamecube brand new from Game Rush (when Blockbuster Video still existed), booting it up, getting killed at the chainsaw dude at the beginning of the game and never playing it again.

I watched my cousin play it on Wii and I ended up beating it on Wii myself. It was awesome. Very happy to be replaying this remake on PS5, though the Wii controls were awesome.

Yah I'm waiting for reviews for sure. Loved the original, will want to play this regardless, but may wait for heavy discounting.

Alan Wake 2 is pretty good survival horror digital only though plus Remedy has a tendecy to drop in price quickly like with Control, Alan Wake 1 and that other time travel game.
