Borderlands is a must have, I must say. From Gearbox comes an amazing, cartooney all around bloody FPS-RPG, and I must say they did an excellent job at it. Don't assume it's a kids game from the graphics, it's probably one of the more violent games.
Players aren't getting this game for the story, I can assure you that. Although It's not terrible but I think it could have been better. You start out on your way to Pandora, a planet of mysteries and outlaws. You all have one thing in common, you want to find The Vault. Said to hold treasures beyond your wildest imaginations, everyone on Pandora is out to get it and I don't blame them. You start out on a bus heading to the town of Fyrestone and on that bus ride the game gives you the chance of creating your character. You have Roland the Soldier, Mordecai the Hunter, Lilith the Siren, and Brick, each with their own unique abilities and skills; you may want to choose wisely. Shortly after you depart off the bus you will meet a funny little robot named Claptrap. That's when you will learn the basics of the game, pretty much Borderlands tutorial.
I have to say the graphics in Borderlands are pretty awesome. It's pretty much Fallout 3 + cell-shaded graphics and you get Borderlands. Awesomely detailed textures and very nice scenery I'd have to say that this is one of the main reason I keep coming back to it.
Gameplay consists of going from town to town doing various missions on bulletin boards, from eliminating a certain enemy to gathering certain loot. It can get repetitive at times but once you're able to take out one of the main baddies it all gets interesting again; that's what will keep you coming back for more. Backtracking can also be a plus considering you won't get the same weapon twice, which is what I absolutely love about this game! You have Sniper Rifles, Shotguns, Rocket Launchers, Revolvers, Pistols, Combat-Rifles, and Sub-Machine Guns. What I like about it most is the variety. You go from a Rocket Launcher that shoots acid rockets that melt your enemies away to a sniper rifle that shoots exploding bullets that will rip through limbs, the possibilities are endless! You also have your vehicles for fast traveling which can be very useful when you don't want to walk 20 miles to a location. I forgot to mention one thing though, imagine doing all of this whilst free roaming with 3 buddies. The multiplayer is awesome, I couldn't imagine it any other way. Anything from the single player is accessible from multiplayer. Having trouble with a certain boss? Easy. Gather up some friends and make him regret that he ever messed with you in the first place and on top of all that, the more friends you invite to your world the better experience and loot you will receive so it's a win-win situation for you and your pals.
The sound effects and music in Borderlands is no award winner but it isn't bad at all. You have the typical sounds you'd find in a FPS and some pretty awesome music to listen to. I must say though, the voice acting is excellent though. The characters are humorous and each person you meet in Pandora is unique. Awesome sound for an awesome game, a good match-up.
Overall, Borderlands is a must have for any videogame fanatic like me. You have shooting, blood, lots of exploration, vehicles, tons of weapons, online co-op and lots of quests. What more could you ask for in a FPS? By now Borderlands shouldn't cost you more than 30 bucks and if you don't already own this and want it, take my word for it and get this game as soon as you have the chance. If not you're missing out. I should also add that some say the game doesn't get interesting until your second playthrough where you will get much, much better equips and tougher enemies.
