Just say it. This game looks like the word. We all know it, we all would never love it and love to hate it, and every gamer on a Nintendo console knows this word exactly... SHOVELWARE. Games made with little to no effort to quickly cash in and make a few thousand bucks. Well, let me tell you something. This game is NOT shovelware. This game is a one-of-a-kind, puzzle/rhythm game that you don't need low expectations to like. It looks like shovelware at first, having a well-known company on the front, with some misleading cover. Though the game experience is nothing like you would expect, it is one of the most underrated titles on the DS. What comes to you when you think of underrated titles on the DS system? Certainly not this game, but with its quirky art style, simple touch-only gameplay, great learning curve, and easy to get into but one-of-a-kind style, what isn't to love?
So, just looking at the package, you expect some kind of stupid Red Bull promoted junk. Well, this game is not junk at all. This is a unique game that will leave you wondering how you could possibly love it? I mean, all you do in the entire game is connect dots. That is right, CONNECT DOTS! Now, hear me out before you pull the shovelware card again. The game consists of quickly connecting the right dots based on various shapes, while your "b-boy" dances on the top screen. You can customize your character however you like, but my #1 biggest complaint about this game is the loading for customizing your character takes SO LONG!! It really just makes customization tedious, which is something it shouldn't be. So you play as a b-boy going in to dance competitions, and this is pretty much the whole game. Now, this may sound tedious and boring, but it isn't! It is physically impossible to do this game any justice in writing. You need to play it to experience it. So your b-boy goes around, winning all of the competitions by connecting the dots to do dance moves, customizing your character as you want. This really might not sound fun, but it is! For some unknown reason, this game just sticks to you as something you would think is crap but actually is one of the best titles in your library.
The soundtrack in this game is great. Various techno music tracks that sound great for the game, even though they are simple. Everything in this game is simple: the graphics, the sounds, the gameplay. That is what is so great about it. Even though everything is so simple and might not seem like much, it fits perfectly with the game and creates an unexpected experience that you will love. That is what Red Bull BC One is, a game that you will love. Minimalistic graphics, great sound, and one-of-a-kind gameplay. Everything in this game is so different, it just has a perfect feeling.
Another nice touch to this game is that there are mini-games added in. You can unlock 14 different mini-games to play. One thing to note is that everything in the game, even the menus, only uses the touch screen. Everything. While it gives this game its own special feeling, it eventually hurts your hands. There is also 1v1 multiplayer via multicart play, in case you wanna do a 1-on-1 b-boy battle with a friend who also found this game in the $5 bin at some store.
This game is great. It might not be the most complex, challenging game ever, and not everyone will like how simple it is, but everything about it is great. Very simple and easy to understand gameplay, a great soundtrack, and unique graphics all make this game special, especially for a cheap price. If nobody had tacked on a Red Bull logo to this, I'm sure it could've been a very popular DS game. Now, it is available for $5 or less just about everywhere, making this a budget title that anyone can enjoy. It is just one of the best DS titles you can get, regardless of the price. If you want a quick, easy to pick up puzzle/rhythm experience, look no further. Red Bull BC One is the game for you.
