I want to swap a screen from a beat up DS Lite with a good screen into a MINT DS Lite with a less than perfect screen.
If you do this work fine, otherwise I'll pay a 10% finders fee to someone who knows someone who is trusted/respected in another community that does this work. In other words, $10 after I get this done for me and am satisfied.
DS lite go for about 25$ to 30$ shipped on ebay, for a decent condition ds lite. I bought one over the summer, but it didn't have the cover for the GBA slot, otherwise great shape. Just do that sheesh.
IF you are just looking to swap out the screen, I'd suggest trying one of the places that fixes smartphone screens. I see them all the damn time walking around new york, and yeah will probably cost you about a hundred dollars.
edit, but why the fudge would you replace the screen for 100$ when you can buy one in great shape for 25ish?
I have been disassembling my DSLite and 3DS family of consoles for a few months for minor part replacement (fixed shoulder buttons, SD slots, buttons etc...) but have not done a full screen swap. Been working up to a full shell swap. Seeing as how a screen swap is basically the same amount of steps as a shell swap (mainly getting that ribbon cable from the top screen routed through the hinge unit :X), I'd be happy to get this done for you for less than what you're asking for.
I do not have a notable reputation as modder/repair man, but I have been about 5 "DS family" consoles deep in disassembly/reassembly with minor repairs and have had success on every project. My focus lately has been controller refurb, but I'm confident I can do this job and if I feel as though I'll break something, I just won't attempt the project. ;)
Let me know if you're interested and shoot me a PM, but I'd recommend searching more for someone who has done this specific swap, first.
I've been refurbishing and repairing Nintendo handhelds for a few years now. What it sounds like is you just need a new shell for your system. If you're taking about the top screen, then there is a lens that is glued to the actual housing of the console and protects the LCD screen. If it's the touch screen that is beat up, then a new screen would be needed if you want a perfect screen.
You could do that, or you could order a new replacement shell on eBay for <$15.
Also, there is a bezel around the touch screen that is color matched to the console. For example, if you have a pink DS Lite, the touch screen is going to have a plastic pink trim glued onto it that you need to remove. It doesn't sound like you are planning to swap screens, but if you do this is something to keep in mind. Quality replacement shells come with everything you need.
I've repaired around 200 ds lites and I'm pretty comfortable with it. Probably the best route would be to buy new screens though instead of getting used screens. I have some new screens on hand already. shoot me an offer if you want.
