What is the Virtual Box?

The Virtual Box is a fun way to trade your games, amiibo, accessories, eCurrency, etc. Users add their items to the box in hopes that their item gets picked. Once picked they can then choose an item from the box. Games can be added to the box at ANY time(not just before it opens). Please note you must be at least a Bronze Star and in good standing to participate. No BTRS!

How it works
1. Add 1 or more games/amiibo/accessories/etc to the box (the more you add, the better chance you will get picked)
2. If someone chooses your game they will send you an offer for your game
3. Once you receive an offer for your game you can then choose a game from the box (you have 24 hours)
4. Post in the thread what game you choose and send that person an offer
5. "Pick and Run" will not be tolerated and will result in loss of pick and reverting back to the previous picker. (Pick and Run is when you pick a game and then pull all/most/high value games shortly after)
6. Once you make a pick you must leave your games in a minimum of 3 picks after your selection or 24 hours, whichever occurs first.
7. If there are multiple games listed, please select the first game listed as that person added their game first. Unless there is some difference like sealed/DLC, etc.

*Please review the rules section

What you can add
- Anything video game related is allowed (games, systems, guides, accessories, amiibo)
- Any game from any system is allowed, I'll add a section for that system if a game is added
- eCurrency is allowed, but must be at least $10 in value. I ask that each person only add 1 eCurrency item for the first week. After that you may add as much as you want.
- Bundles are allowed so long as the items are for the same system
- Blu-Ray and 4K movies are allowed, however I don't want to add tons of $3 movies. I reserve the right to not allow movies, I don't want the box full of cheap movies
- There is no value limit to the games, however it is recommended you bundle lower values games if you want to get picked

RULES

- Anything video game related is allowed (games, systems, guides, accessories, etc, etc)
- eCurrency is allowed, but must be at least $10 in value. I ask that each person only add 1 eCurrency item for the first week. After that you may add as much as you want.
- Bundles are allowed
- I will not limit the value of games added
- You must be at least a Bronze Star and in good standing to participate. No BTRS!
- One item is the minimum requirement to be a part of The Virtual Box, however the more items you add the better your chances of being picked.
- If you want to add an item, please only make a post in the thread! Do not pm me the items you want to add
- Items must remain in the box for a minimum of 3 picks after you add them or 24 hours, whichever occurs first.
- You can put unpopular items in the box if you would like, but your chances of being picked are better when you add more popular ones.
- If there is a problem please message the other user and then message me. I will do my best to help. I will remove users from the box if they become a problem.
- There may be no more than 2 of the same item listed in the box at once.
- When it's your turn, you must be able to send your game in a timely manner.
- If you don't make your pick within 24 hours of your item being picked, I will personally pick your item (and you might not like that, so please don't let it come to this).
- The faster you make your pick, the healthier the box will be. So please make your pick ASAP!
- Please do not wait for the op to be updated to make your pick. I will try my best to make sure I update it every chance I get, but waiting to pick just slows things down, and ruins the fun for everyone.
- Once a trade is pending, it's pending. TRADE AT YOUR OWN RISK! If your person flakes that is between the two of you, and should not affect the rotation
- All games are assumed CIB. New "complete" or "CIB" will no longer be noted. Only "cart only" or "sealed." If you'd like, I will also note if the game is a special edition or different print (such as Nintendo Selects, Ultimate Edition, etc.) but make sure to let me know when adding.
- Items must be in-hand to be added to the box (no pre-orders or pending in items).

- If a user refuses to accept the offer while the game is in the box, it will lead to an automatic ban, so if an item got traded or sold, make sure to remove it here right away.
- If a user removes everything after getting picked or a good majority of it, it will lead to an automatic ban. And loss of their pick, the previous user will need to pick another game
- I reserve the right to veto/null a pick if someone trys to "game" the system.
- I reserve the right to ban people who are causing a problem in the box. We are all here to have a good time.

Bleed_DukeBlue won first pick - they will pay $15 to the person holding the pick when the box closes

I had several people ask when it would reopen, but most of them haven't added yet. I'll tag a list I had from last box, but I know it is missing some participants. Feel free to tag anyone I forgot. I also noticed a few of the regulars are frozen or abandoned right now.

Box is scheduled to open 10/23/2020 (assuming we have enough participants and games)

Thanks for the heads up, but I don't have anything I'd really like to add. I've spent the last couple of months selling and trading what I would've put in the box. I'll keep an eye on it just in case.

Microsoft Xbox One

If I kept these, I'm sure there is more in other boxes. I'll post them up as I find them.

I really like this idea. yes yes yes

Laughed at this: "If you don't make your pick within 24 hours of your item being picked, I will personally pick your item (and you might not like that, so please don't let it come to this)." Has that actually happened?

I definitely would join, just have to check through my games and things.

I have a few questions. Just want to get the details.

Does this last until the entire box is empty? Until everyone has gotten an item? When?

How is it decided who gets first pick? Just curious. I keep reading through the rules, to make sure I have them down, but I don't see that anywhere (could have easily missed something)

@nonamesleft First pic is usually randomly selected. And the box will end once picking slow to a crawl and a majority of people involved are no longer interested in what is left. People will start removing their items and it's usually pretty clear when its run its course and is time to stop. It doesn't go until everything is gone.

Before I started to run the box it had taken place a few times. I think it was Dashey who had to do this a couple times. It was a rule that has been around for a long time, so I still use it. There were several times I should have made the pic, but I didn't strictly enforce the rule.

I remember creating one of these back in 2009 or 10 I believe. Not sure if I was the first, but doubtful since this forum is a 90s child. All of them suffer the same fate. And any rules on locking a game deter anyone from participating.

I can definitely understand that. Reserving something in a grab bag style event kind of defeats the whole purpose.

Does anyone want to throw in some retro (PS1/N64 and before) with me? There is literally only one thing I kind of want out of everything that's been added so I don't want to be the dick that takes his toys and goes home once I get that item or it's been picked.

Hopefully we get a few more participants before it opens. Otherwise this could be over quickly. Normally I'd participate, however with both new gen consoles and games coming out I need to be very selective with my money (shipping adds up quick). I also don't have any I'd want to part with thats worth adding. I'll look around and maybe add 1 or 2 items.

I'll update the list and do the drawing sometime tomorrow evening.

Do you think the first pick and coin values are OK? should we lower them?

Chuckled when I saw this. I'm literally looking at my N64 Star Wars Ep 1 Racer right now. Oh well, wouldn't want to take your thunder. Guess this cart is out.

Nintendo 64
Bundled together:
Toy Story 2 - G, cart only
San Francisco Rush Extreme Racing - G-, cart only

Pics: N64 Games https://imgur.com/a/Jepzto0

The connectors on bottom have faded in color from green to brownish (seems to sometimes happen with these older games) - but they work fine. Played both for awhile to test them.

Nintendo DS

Sonic Classic Collection - VG, CIB

Game Boy Advance

Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga - G, cart only

Microsoft Xbox 360

Bundled:

Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4 - Sealed
Lego Harry Potter Years 5-7 - Sealed

@WithinTemptation - If the following is allowed, great, if not then just don't count it.

DVD bundle, all in cases:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 - Widescreen
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 - Widescreen - 2 disc set (movie disc + special features disc)
Lord of the Rings - Fellowship of the Ring - Widescreen - 2 disc set (movie disc + special features disc)
Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers - Widescreen - 2 disc set - in generic Blockbuster case, with label remnants on back of paper insert
Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King - Fullscreen - 2 disc set

I didn't find anything else. Looks like I did get rid of most all of my games in the sale before I moved. So just those three from me.

Just me, or does it seem like there is not enough to open the box? Also, this is probably bad timing with the new consoles coming in a couple of weeks.

If people are getting rid of older stuff I think the timing is fine. But I'd prefer to wait a bit longer as there are only a few things listed that I can even play lol. I do think this will go better if we wait for more stuff to be added.

I remember trying to run what I think was the first "virtual box". Really struggled getting it through to people that if you list crap that no one wants you're never going to get a pick. People kept asking, "When is it going to be my turn?"

This is my thought as well. Timing is fine, just seems to be lack of interest. I re-opened because I had several people asking me to do so. I actually thought timing should be great.

Should we wait another week and see if there are more participants? What do you guys think?

To be completely honest I have higher value games I'd like to add, but there just wasn't enough added. It's a two sided coin, since me adding them in could encourage others, but since money is tight on my end, I'm reserving the higher values for things I actually want.

Not that there isn't stuff in the box now I'd like, but not to warrant a $30-$50 game

Definitely a good point. But you never know what someone else wants. And it's not very practical for everyone to ask if anyone is interested in their item(s). Is it not simpler for everyone who wants to participate to just add what they have with fingers crossed? (Not being rhetorical here, just speculating).

Yes, I agree with you 100%. The issue wasn't that people were adding crap, it was simply a lack of comprehending how that style of virtual box was going to work. People thought it would be like a physical box where everyone got a turn. People were upset that those offering the best items were getting multiple turns to pick before they got a turn.

Completely understandable how a potential misunderstanding could occur, though it isn't unreasonable to expect that the best items would get the most attention.

I guess an ideal, but not realistic, scenario would be that everyone puts in an item that is of equal desirability. Though that is way too rigid to work with.

I can think of one possible scenario where perhaps it's the case that everyone wins. If you have a group of x amount of people who all have the same console(s). Everyone puts a game in the box and then takes a game they haven't played.

But who knows. I know these things aren't that simple to put together. Once arranged a baseball game for a bunch of friends and family. It was so difficult trying to please everyone. And even when you think you've accounted for everything, there's sometimes that one detail that was overlooked.

In the end, these things are usually good fun though.

Ok everyone, we will postpone the opening to November 1st to give more people time to add some items.

Realistically if we don't get more participants we might have to try the box again some time next year.

I was thinking something, since this got pushed off for the purpose of hopefully getting more participants.

I'm sure there are some who don't know what this is and didn't see the thread in the first place.

I recall a couple years back I kept seeing on the homepage of GameTZ a bunch of featured trades with something like "virtual box pick" as one of the items being traded. I was curious, but had no clue what that meant. I only figured out what it was last week, when I read through the posts above.

Perhaps if there's a way to have this thread appear on the "hot forum topics" section, people who wouldn't notice it otherwise would?

Maybe have a bunch of users post here a bunch, back and forth, to get it there? I'm guessing that's how threads end up in that section. This type of thing is good fun, and meant for people to participate in the first place. The more people the better, right?

Or maybe even ask Bill if he would put this on the hot topics section, if that's even possible. I mean, it's all coding, should be possible right?

Thoughts?

Haha. Nice. You know, awhile back when I first started seeing the word "bump" in these forums, I was just puzzled.

People typing one word: Bump.

I couldn't figure it out. Finally just asked.

But apparently you can use any word, or so I was told, so why did "bump" become the word to use? Why not pineapple, or pina colada, or jalapeno?

I think I'm going to start typing some kind of produce instead.

Because you are bumping the topic to the top of the view list. This is from back when online forums were all formatted (most still are) to show topics with new posts at the top. Going back to the BBS (Bulletin Board System, late 80's through he mid 90's) days. People would post bump in a topic to send it to the top of a list so more people saw it. Because they bumped it up the list, they used the word bump.
nonamesleft
Gold Good Trader

I figured that it's because you are bumping the topic up to the top. But the formatted isn't done in a way to specifically target the word "bump'" is it? I know almost nothing about coding, so I simply don't know. For all I know it is.

Presently, is it the case that the computer system detects any activity on a forum and then bumps up the topic, or only if the system detects the word "bump" it bumps up the topic?

Ah, so then maybe it's a "if it ain't broke don't fix it" type thing, and no reason not to still use the word "bump."

Though I'm tempted to use produce. Why not add some humor?

Picture reading a thread about whatever, and then the latest post just says "asparagus"
