I think The Emoji Movie just got bad press because all of the adults that rolled their eyes at the idea of an Emoji movie. It wasn't made for them. Kids liked it and it is pretty formulaic to any other Disney, Pixar or Dreamworks movie out there, albeit not as well done.

The Emoji Movie is absolute garbage any way you look at it. Just a poor concept, poor writing, poor execution. Kids like anything that's animated generally, and adults' critiques of animated movies are still valid. There are plenty that I love, that are good movies at a base level. Emoji Movie was not in my opinion.

I gave mother! a 5 or 5.5 out of 10 if I recall, but it still didn't deserve a Razzie nomination. And Jennifer Lawrence absolutely didn't deserve one for her performance, she was the only thing holding it together.

So, they call it Razzle now? Or does Sir-Trades-A-Lot need to fix their title?

I'm a little surprised that Johnny Depp's performance in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales earned him a "Worst Actor" nomination. I know that film wasn't an Oscar contender or anything; but, it did what it set out to do which was be a fun popcorn flick. Personally, I liked it. Did either it or Depp's performance really garner such poor marks from moviegoers and critics alike? I almost find that hard to believe... surprise

I watched it on Netflix, honestly not that bad. Story sucked but it had funny moments

Depp hasn't been a good actor since Edward Scissorehands..........okay, since Ed Wood. He has never been that great.

Didn't Johnny Depp get an Oscar nod for his first performance? Have his performances gotten that bad or are we just so tired of them they appear bad?

Also, Baywatch wasn't really that bad.

Johnny Depp is one of the most overrated actors ever. Donnie Brasco and Blow come to mind but he's essentially been a flimflam pretty face in pictures for the better part of 20 years. He's pretty and one of his best friends is widely known director so he always gets parts in those trash movies. Tim Burton is one of the most over rated directors too. He made a handful of well crafted films in the early 90's and has given us overly artsy, go nowhere, bore us to death films ever since. These two deserve each other. Both riding the coattails of Their early success into nothing but an ocean of mediocrity and disappointment.

In my opinion, criticism is only warranted if it's just a string of blatant cash-grabs (lookin' at you Bruce Willis), but if a creative mind is at least attempting to stay true to their artistic vision on any given project, I give them props.

I agree Tim Burton is nowhere near the excellence that he was - but he also doesn't deserve the scorn he's gotten lately. Depp is much more worthy of the critiques. Let's make a list: Pee Wee, Beetlejuice, Batman, Batman Returns, Ed Wood, Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare Before Christmas (produced/wrote).... all classics to many who grew up in the 90s, with only Ed Wood coming in under-the-rader. Moving on a little more modern... Sleepy Hollow, Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd, Frankenweenie and Big Eyes are also all solid movies (though I admit not as awesome (EDIT: this said "objectively great" before I responded later in the thread, none of that is objective and I don't even believe they're great) as his early stuff). Burton will always have my love for Big Fish though, which is one of my all-time, top 10 favorites. Easily his best film, front-to-back, in terms of everything from character to aesthetic to story.

In fact, the only Burton movies I think are actually bad are Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the two Alice movies & Dark Shadows. And despite your suggestion, @Prime, these turds are far from "artsy bore-us-to-death" films. These are the movies that are blatant studio-mandated, large-budget CGI spectacle projects. In my opinion, Burton is at his best when doing his whimsical "artsy" stuff, I just feel he's chosen more studio work in the past 10 years, which makes him look bad comparatively in regards to his early career.

Johnny Depp is a different story. Depp has spent the last half of his career choosing paycheck movies. His last actually "good" role was Sweeney Todd... literally every other movie from 2009 until now have been fudging turds (unless you count his cameos in Doctor Parnassus & Fantastic Beasts). Black Mass was alright, but even that was a little disappointing. Still, Depp has so many classics under his belt that I find it hard to crap on his body of work as a whole, but for sure - the last decade or so, both professionally and personally, have definitely made me see him for the dumpster fire he seems to be.

Love Coraline, had nothing to do with Burton or Depp though.

I chose not to include James and the Giant Peach though, even though Burton did produce that. That's another great movie.

haha you're the best at discussions Prime old chap. I certainly don't love the dude enough to give his johnson the old 1-2, there are lots of better directors with lots of better movies. In my opinion, Big Fish is Burton's only actually great movie, but he's got lots of good sprinkled in. yes

Yah I like it a lot more than the Burton stop-motion movies personally. Again, James and the Giant Peach could rival it, but that was only produced by Burton.

James and the Giant Peach had such a huge impact on me when I was a kid. Its crazy animation and sometimes-creepy set pieces really etched themselves in my noggin. The shots of "the rhino" freaked me out, but the overall adventure was super satisfying.

I must confess that I do like a lot of the man's work. I can't say I like it all. But, it's definitely a safe bet that, if it's one of his, I'll enjoy it.

That being said, Big Fish is, hands down, his magnum opus. If it wasn't for noticing some of his telltale markings, I honestly don't think I'd even know it was his. It's just. that. good. shock

Thats because Big Fish is Burton's attempt to make a Junet-Amelie-style movie.

Ed Wood and Big Fish is when Burton actually started to try to be an auteur. He succeeded with Ed Wood(imo) but Finney carried Big Fish and Burton really couldn't hang. So he went from that to a bunch of garbage.

Ed Wood is definitely his best effort at being a serious filmmaker. Congrats to him for making a bunch of money though, he's best at doing that, not making films.

All kidding aside, are you saying that Batman, Beetlejuice, and Pee-Wee's Big Adventure are all bad films?! Oscar contenders they are not and I'll be the first to admit it. But, they're exciting, funny, and chock-full of his oh-so special cinematic style. So, fudge you, pal; I like his movies and I ain't ashamed to admit it!! winking raspberry

I was talking about him trying to be an auteur. Edward Slicyhands and Beetlejuice are great.

Both of his Batman films are pretty awesome too. DeVito MADE his second Batman film though, he deserved the oscar, easily.

Batman Returns is terrible and doesn't hold up.

It's definitely a good movie, but only good. Though I agree it doesn't hold up to how it came off back in the early 90s, as a semi-artsy/macabre superhero movie, Batman mythos aside, it's just another fine quirky Burton movie. I really only feel like it doesn't hold up compared to more recent Batman movies, it holds up fine to other work from that time period. It's about as outlandish as Burton's other movies, and they're just fun movies in general. Not high-art, despite Burton's probable intention, but still fun.
