I'm torn on what to do and have to make a decision quickly.

So I reserved a Lightning (on day 3) and didn't make the cut this year. So I caved, and put in for a 2022 Powerboost (Limited) about 5 months ago (with a Z plan - that is not a guarantee to be available to me next year). Just got notified that it'll be assembled near end of September (after 5 months of zero communication).

My lease was up 8 months ago (2018 Platinum with 44k miles - should end around 8k or more miles under lease); however, I kept extending monthly in waiting to trade in towards next one.

I'm sure I probably should have simply bought out the lease and sold open market (still can); however, with the fee's and hassle of buying then selling ... I was/am naively optimistic that my dealership will get me close enough to close the gap between private and trade-in with all the fee's managed. My dealership told me typically, that open market only makes sense if you can make > 7% of cost to cover all the fee's/tax/etc. when buying out the lease.

KBB is saying I should be somewhere between $42k to $50k for the value of my truck, yet I just tried out Carvana & Vroom and they both offered me $38k --- not great leverage to show the dealership!

I'm stuck in debate, and I have to crap or get of the pot really soon. A few questions/points:
- Do I wait out the Lightning and skip the Powerboost? The cost of gas seems to be coming down relatively quick, hope/assume it will continue to decline, but who knows!
- First gen of Ford's EV seems to be going well ... but 300 miles max, leaves for some anxiety (even though there's a ton of charging stations out there now), and you know their next gen they'll probably have a much longer distance.
- That damn Frunk, man I want that ... grocery shopping with kids/dogs in a truck, pain in the ass.
- No timeline as of now on when the '23 Lightning will even be available.
- Do I buy out my current lease and attempt to sell open market?
- I'm nervous about the payment on a Limited If I don't get a good offer on trade-in, probably overdid it here but got excited having a Z plan for the first time

Thanks for any/all feedback

I pretty sure the max 300 miles range is under full load, and a lot better when not hauling/towing anything. Still, I get what you mean. Leasing an EV is crazy smart IMO the way battery tech is going and what we could be seeing in the next 5-10 years. I would love to get a lightning but there is also a complete lack of charging infrastructure here, I live in a oil town and it's that or nothing it seems. However we have seen a small shift, There are a couple of Tesla's and about 2-3 Mustang Mach E's and a few charging stations... but not enough to make me say that's enough to go get one. Hopefully soon.

Though it's nice to see another person that see's the value in leasing.

Ugh, that sucks man, hopefully within a few years we'll see a lot more stations going in across the nation. There's a lot of charging stations popping up all around Northeast Ohio. We do like to hit the road though, and while I know it's probably a non-issue, the anxiety is real of "what-if".

I've never leased until I met my wife. This is going to be my 4th lease, and while it sucks having a never ending payment ... it's nice having something new, at a lower cost, every few years.

Totally agreed on leasing the EV, would be a poor decision to buy as it'll be immediately outdated. Yet, I just don't know when I'd actually get access to one - ideally/maybe next year? I can't find any hard facts on when the prebuys from 2022 will be available in 2023.

I'd hate to go buy this Powerboost now and then get the call "hey, your Lightning is ready!".

Also, we're hoping to move within a year, but if we're still here and I get the Lightning, It'd take a fair amount of effort to run a new power line to my garage for charging.

My gut says stick with the Powerboost, trade-in after 3 years, hope for a gen 2 Lightning. Yet, cost of vehicle, gas, cool factor ... all say wait a bit longer for the Lightning.

ha, we do well, but ... two kids and a stupid life style, leaves us always fighting against credit card debt. We just got everything paid off again a couple months ago and of course ... we resumed stupidity. Got some really cool stuff though raspberry We splurged and got our kid a new "jeep" and my god he's in love with it, makes it worthwhile - https://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&lo...

Thankfully, I got out of the GameStop fiasco relatively unscathed. In total I think I lost less than a grand tops. It's DOGE/SHIB that's currently fudging my day up (down around $15k, wompers!). I'm clearly a big dumb animal.

Unfortunately not the case. There have been ongoing reports of people getting as low as 60 mile range with the extended range battery up to about 150 mile range with teh extended range while towing something significant (say 5000 pounds). It sounds like the lightning straight up sucks with campers/ horse trailers that give extra wind resistance, those are typically the numbers down in the 60-80 mile range.

I haven't seen similar tests for payload yet, but I bet with a 2000 pound payload, that 300 mile range would drop closer to 200.

IMO the lighting isn't yet there for the truck duties unless you know you'd never have to travel more than 100 miles round trip with a heavy trailer. If you are someone that buys trucks as a commuter, i'm sure the lightning will be one of the best on market. But if you need your truck to tow or haul frequently, I'd stick with ICE/hybrid.

Wow, 60-150!? Jesus, that would be awful.

Well for now, we got rid of our trailer and went to an RV. So my truck (for now), won't be towing anything. So really it's more commuter (and not even that much as I've been working from home for 9 years now). I only put 40k miles on my truck after 3.5+ years.

Down the line, I want to get a trailer for some toys (quad/boat/etc.) which yeah ... I can't foresee this current gen being worth the time.

This is the kinda of reassurance I was looking for. I think in my area, I'd be good, but traveling (which we plan on doing much more, both with the truck and the RV), the angst is real and not something I'm ready to deal with.

I'm not sure how much credence to put into the lower numbers. The ones that go into details it tends to be stuff like they were towing a 9500 pound horse trailer while driving up the continental divide and passing people at 120 mph. Like I think they were able to achieve the numbers but were trying to get a bad of results as possible.

The numbers coming in from like 120-200 are the ones that sound most realistic. real life conditions.

I only go there to get their version of angel soft toilet paper because it pairs well with my butt and my septic. Nothing in the store is a dollar and if it is it's downsized so much people are overpaying per ounce. I've noticed people going in there buying grocery carts full of stuff and are outside re-bagging everything for their walk or bike ride home. It seems like people maybe shopping there instead of grocery stores. The quality is way worse but you do what you have to.

gosh darnit. Was supposed to get the truck late Sept, then early Oct, now it's maybe early November ... how are these chip shortages still a thing when so many other technologies are recovering?

And now, the next year models are already being sold. Feels dumb to pick up a 2022 at the very end of the year, yet who knows when a 2023 would even be available.

Also got an email about orders opening soon again for the Lightning, but keep hearing of more complaints and challenges with the first gen.

Everything uses chips and everyone's got a two year backlog, demand never stopped, as usual it tends to get worse than normal as people start over-ordering to make sure this "never happens again etc". It's gonna take a long bit after these new chip fabs come up to get us straight again, the new plants and workers haven't been broken in yet so probably half their work is crap or deficient. The chips in your car, in your laptops and cellphones, your videogames and TVs, your radios and radio stations, your transmitters and airplanes, tablets, toys, everything. And that isn't even touching on the logistical nightmare of getting those parts out of the country around the world to their destinations, which is ALSO a treat right now. Plus infections continue to break out. Didn't Ringo just test positive again and they ended up canceling the entire tour? That sorta little crap, everywhere. Trust when I say if it looks like things are "recovering" it's not actually "recovered", it's just basically starting to get up to a point where they can at least start to ship stuff. Because of course anything's better than nothing. You still can't actually find a PS5 in a store, right? The reason the used car market went bananas was because everyone firesaled stuff during the pandemic (think Enterprise) and basically output went to near zero up until very, very recently and you can only scrape the bottom of that barrel for so long. It's bouncing back but you're hardly first in line or even a significant blip on the radar.

I took a train to Michigan just about a year ago from Indiana, there's a field that used to be miles of grass and corn that's nothing but cars waiting for chips now, it stretches far and it stretches wide, for miles. That's a good start on what's waiting around! I thought these things sounded awesome but honestly one of those "too good to be true for gen1" situations so I didn't get too excited. That was even assuming the stuff would ship of course

As a fellow Ohioian, there is no way I would get an electric vehicle. Winter alone will kill you with a need to generate heat in the car and lower miles per full charge. Lack of stations and the time to get charged will be a major problem

Crap! I still don't have a date on the Powerboost, it's 'supposed' to be early November. I'd get a Limited Powerboost for a bit cheaper than a Platinum Lightning.

I want that frunk and not to pay for gas, but I'm super leery about gen 1. Thought this would have fixed itself but my Powerboost is a cool 6months behind schedule because the world sucks.

@rayzor6 - I thought the same until I Google mapped ev charging and was blown away how many spots are in NE OH alone.

You are a braver soul than I. I try to stay on top of my fuel and there has been MANY times that there would be no way for me to try to find a spot, that isn't taken and wait multiple hours to get a charge sufficient to make it home. My territory has a charging station that will charge ONE vehicle. At least you are leasing...I can't imagine trying to buy to own one of these things knowing there is a battery needed that costs multiple thousands of dollars.

Anyway, I'm not trying to poo poo...I hope you get your Powerboost! :)

It’s definitely happening for all car manufacturers and that’s why none of them give a fudge because you aren’t gonna get what you want faster from anywhere else.
I’m still waiting for my Jeep. I keep being told “it should be here next week” and it’s been over a month. I didn’t get the standard panoramic roof because of supply chain issues but the rest should be there.

Yesterday I noticed a build identical to mine was in transit to the lot (just a different color) so I asked if that wasn’t an order for a customer if I could just switch to it. I’m waiting to find out.

Basically with the new baby and because I’m tall, we had to upgrade car seats and now I can’t fit in the drivers seat with either kid behind me because of how small my current vehicle is. So I really need my new one.

Plenty of "stock" models are flowing in so the lots have things to sell. It's just anything special ordered can take a bit. I ordered a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe with all the options I could add.

With the options I got, 70,735 for the Trailhawk. There's some higher level trims though too but they are more luxury. I prefer the rugged look. Base TH is right at 65k but the lowest 4xe is in the 50s I think.

I am leasing this one because it is new tech. Might buy it at the end, might not. I might wait and see if we get a full electric one. I like having both too, but it's also twice as much to go wrong. Still the GC has gotten amazing reviews and the board I'm on everyone is loving theirs.

The Wrangler has a 4xe too. I almost got one of those but with 2 young kids and the road noise concern I decided to wait. They have also been around since 2021 so lots of time to work out kinks. The GC gets slightly better mileage which was another win for me.

I couldn’t even fathom paying 70k for a new car. I cringed when I payed 32k for my Fj Cruiser a couple years ago.

I am trying not to think about it. But leasing I'll be "paying" under 30 over time and then upgrading unless I buy. But you are right. Hell it's almost as much as my first house cost!

Haha same here... I've progressively spent more with each lease. Telling myself "next time I'll scale back"... Haven't figured it out yet. This Limited Powerboost is $87k! Stupid. The Lightning is $98k, but passing in hopes of the Powerboost actually showing up.

So dumb, but man it's nice having a new ride every few years. At some point I'll stop being an idiot.

This will be the first time I'm leasing and I'm nervous about it. I'm gonna sell my current ride to Carvana for 22k (quote has already been done) but I can't give it up til my new ride is here.

Yes it's good having a new vehicle every few years. I got into a trap of buying one every 3-4yrs and with these prices for the features I want, it makes more sense to try leasing. I do want to either buy this one at the end, or find a good upgrade and buy that (or hell maybe even a used version of what I'll have or something slightly newer with the way car values drop.)

Though it's hilarious... almost 3 yrs ago no one would give me 15k for my Jeep and now I am going to get 22k for it. Wild times.

I always said I'd NEVER lease, alas, this is my 4th.

I said the same thing everytime... Imma buy it when I'm done. Problem is, new tech keeps ya hooked. Just like anything else these days. It's addicting, and stupid.

Yet it's AMAZING not having to do any maintenance sans oil changes.

Jeeps are worth a ton these days. My buddy traded in his old one, got a brand new one, for almost same payment.

Have you looked at carbuyerusa.com? They were giving me a better quote than Carvana for my car.

Got the call my Jeep showed up this morning so I'm picking it up tomorrow!! Putting down a total of 16k so my monthly payments will be a low 430/mo and yeah... will decide if I'm buying towards the end. Leasing for 3 years.

I just looked at carbuyerusa.com and they gave a good offer but still about 500 below carvana. So I am in the process of submitting everything to Carvana.

Thanks I'm excited!! I wanted to order this earlier this year but was preoccupied with baby stuff and being in the hospital so we ordered it in August. First time I've ever ordered one like this. Sucked to wait but woohoo!
Also got my Carvana quote locked in and guaranteed. Old car goes Wednesday and after my down payment on this one I'll have 8k in my pocket.

Carvana is such a stupid easy experience. Guy that picked my vehicle up literally asked for the keys, had me sign it, snapped a few photos, and on the truck it went. No test drive, no popping the hood, nothing.

Selling a car to carvana is one thing. Buying is another. Similar experience selling a couple years ago. Two guys came to pick up my car, max time maybe 15 mins before my check was in hand. Fast forward to August of this year. Plan was to sell my current car and buy a new one all from the comfort of my 6” iPhone screen. Picked a car, applied my trade turned in all paperwork, and did an ach for the balance. Now we wait… except that’s all I did was wait. a week went by no status change. Called customer service- “your vehicle is in pre delivery inspection” - cool! Another week goes by no status change. Called customer service- “your vehicle is in pre delivery inspection” Ok but, that’s what I was told last week. Do you have the car, does it really take two weeks to inspect?!? Another week goes by no status change. Called customer service- “your vehicle is in pre delivery inspection” Ok Well it’s been 3 weeks and either there are problems found in the inspection and you’re not being upfront about or the car is lost, can’t be located. Either way I canceled. Left me pretty frustrated with Carvana, I ended up selling my old car to a dealership for more than I payed and more than the Carvana offer and just bought something local.

lol damn I am hoping for a similar experience. Nothing wrong with mine but I don't want any nitpicking bullcrap.

Took delivery of the GC 4xe today and it's fudging amazing!!! So much tech inside it's insane. So fun to drive and FAST. It feels like I'm inside a tank from the future. Gonna be spending a while programming things and figuring stuff out that's for sure. I'm quite happy!

I keep hearing Carvana is about to go belly up. I don't care as long as I get my deposit first. Their stock has crumbled from 300 to 10 and it can't be sustainable offering so much extra cash on vehicles than anyone else will. Especially if they're not gonna really look them over before picking up.

I have heard nothing but nightmares buying from them too.

Would never be a buyer from them after experiencing how they buy vehicles. I watched my vehicle when it was listed go to three different buyers (and this was over the summer with crazy diesel prices)... not a chance in hell they made money on what they offered for my vehicle and what they sold it for after factoring in transportation costs. Even with rolling in financing...

Curious when you finally sell how your experience is. I know the second I got the check in hand, I mobile deposited while the guy was loading my vehicle. Their business model isn't sustainable and they will, with a high probability, end up in BK.

Yeah I'll post about it tomorrow. I'm getting a direct deposit wire so it should be instant. I'm expecting it to be pretty easy. I'm on a 4xe forum and a lot of new Jeep buyers just used them without any issues.

Alright, so tiny hiccup in the selling process but nothing bad. I had scheduled it to be picked up from my home today ($75.) However a driver called out sick so they called me up and said they couldn't get to me until Sunday. I told them I needed this done today and they let me bring it in (12 miles away.) and my plan was to use a Lyft to get home.
Got there just fine, a tech came over, got in started it up, moved it all of 18 inches, got out, had me sign some paperwork and it was done. No lowballing or issues at all with the transfer. Funds should be in my account by morning.
The worst was standing around in 30 degrees with a breeze waiting for my drive home. All in all, not bad.

Well yeah, there's not much they can do if they still can't get chips and parts. This is probably a year off from parts STARTING to normalize, just gotta keep waiting like they are.

Day 1.5 of ownership and I scheduled the electrician to come in and install a level 2 charger. I have charged a few times for free with a fast charger near my home while running errands. It isn't even a big deal because my errands are THERE and I just charge for the time I'm parked. I have driven 130 miles and used about 20 miles of my gas tank. This is the bomb!

Jeep names will be 1 of the 3 depending on what vanity plates are available (order of preference.)

Tried it. I might be able to do a 5 instead of an s. I'll check. But yeah I think we're gonna go White Lotus. I was gonna get a tattoo of one anyway. IDK if I'll find a good plate though. Might just have to think of a silly one.
